White - Sparkling
2005 J. Lassalle Champagne Premier Cru Brut Cuvée Spéciale France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
90 points
Intense nose of almonds and brioche -- slightly high-toned, but extremely biscuity and clearly very autolytic. The palate is sweet, with a surprising amount of bite from the tartness (seems almost a little underripe), but the yeast and bread qualities dominate on the palate, giving the sense of sweetness. Not exactly the most integrated on the palate (perhaps because of the vintage?).
White
2001 Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru Bouchères France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
95 points
An absolutely perfect showing. The nose has a slight bit of flintiness, as well as a bit of peach. There's some apple, too, but it's not the browned apple of dead white Burgundy. It's tart golden apples here. Outstandingly fresh, probably with the help of the little bit sulphur reduction on the nose that I picked up. The palate is broad and expansive, but there's ample acidity to give this the added dimension. It's mineral and crisp -- perhaps it's not as complex and interesting as the modern incarnations with the Clos, but still an outstanding chardonnay in its own right.
White
2015 Domaine Michel Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos St. Jean France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
93 points
Moving in a bit of a Roulotian direction, perhaps? Intensely reduced nose, with plenty of matchstick that takes over almost everything else. Maybe a bit of tart citrus as well? The palate shows a breadth that definitely strikes me as Chassagne, and there's plenty of acidity to help the riper fruit along. There's some nice stone fruit on the palate, giving this a richer mouthfeel. Very nice -- this is one of the wines that doesn't reflect the vintage too much (and that's a good thing).

2008 Simon Bize Latricières-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru
95 points
Tight and young, but absolutely correct and brilliant pinot. It's not the showiest or flashiest or most glamorous producer, but there's something that is always very honest about these wines. This is no exception -- really nice tart red fruit balanced with some earth tones as well. The palate is a little crunchy and the tannins still young and a bit bracing. This still needs time to come around, but there's already signs of brilliance.
White
2012 Trimbach Riesling Clos Ste. Hune France, Alsace
95 points
Yeah, this is just kind of stupidly young right now. But hey, I didn't open it. There's incredible balance here -- really lovely sweet fruit that just balances everything so well. Linear, with powerful acidity and minerality, this is just the right amount of lean, but also the right amount of sweet fruit to balance it out. Rounder and softer than the 2011, and drinking much better right now.

1976 Weingut Spreitzer Oestricher Lenchen Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese Germany, Rheingau

#10-77. From half-bottle. Inky dark in colour -- there's a bit of smoke on the nose here that's really enticing. Caramelly, rich, and intense, with lots of power. Sweet, but well-balanced by the acidity, this reminds me a lot of those old Californian Johannisberger rieslings. It's intense and powerful, but not over the top at any point. Wonderful stuff.

2013 Rene Rostaing Côte-Rôtie Cuvée Classique Ampodium France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
83 points
Nose shows a lot of ashy qualities, as well as some carbonic-like red fruit. The palate is quite thin and also fairly astringent. Pretty consistent with my last experience with this wine.
Red
2010 Château Rauzan-Ségla France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
80 points
The nose is clearly modern, but the oak doesn't show as prominently on the nose as the palate. The palate, however, is clearly modern, showing sweet reduced blueberries and far more oak than this wine could hope to hold. Bitter and unpleasant finish. As a side note, there should be a missing poster on the back of the bottle with a picture of the Margaux perfume on it.

2015 Domaine Taupenot-Merme Morey St. Denis France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis
88 points
Some really nice red fruit on the nose -- a bit crunchy and clearly young. Sweet and ripe, with a structure that doesn't seem too firm. A little soft on the palate; this is an easier, fleshy wine, and good for easy drinking. If I have to guess, not one for longer term drinking, but pleasant enough for now.
Red
2015 Maison Leroy Côte de Nuits Villages France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Nuits Villages
90 points
Nice, crunchy fruit here. Ripe, and there are wisps of that intense Leroy perfume here. Shows some grainy tannins -- I generally like the balance between the fruit profile and earth here.
Red
2014 Maison Leroy Nuits St. Georges France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges
90 points
You know that stereotype about Nuits being all earthy and stuff? That's definitely true here. Clearly a bit dirtier than the 2015 CdN villages. The fruit shows more bright and red here -- definitely a lighter character here.
Red
2011 Maison Leroy Gevrey-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
88 points
As far as the vintage goes, this is pretty solid. No signs of green, but the wine does show the vintage character very strongly -- i.e. very light. Seems to have a touch of stems here. Quite nice (especially for the vintage), but a little light to my palate.
Red
2005 Maison Leroy Beaune 1er Cru Bélissand France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
90 points
A fairly dense and powerful wine, with some good earth aromas, and a generous helping of black fruit. This is still incredibly backward, with lots of tannins that make this seem a bit chewy. Shows the most rustic of the wines (as expected?).
White
2016 Maison Leroy Bourgogne Blanc France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc
90 points
Very floral nose -- clearly just young. An interesting amount of salinity on the palate here, as well as really nice acidic cut. I've trashed a few vintages of this in the past, but this was drinking very well.

2001 Maison Leroy Meursault France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
88 points
This had a hint of the browned apple aromas that makes me a little wary of chardonnay, but it's more a correct symptom of age than anything else. Earthy and savoury, with a nice rounded texture on the palate and good acidity to balance it out, but honestly, this feels like it's just starting to get a touch long in the tooth.
White
2011 Maison Leroy Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
90 points
This was the most complex and complete of the white wines. A slightly rounded texture, but good acidity to back it up. Some nice notes of green apple here to add an extra fruit dimension.

Flight 2 (15 notes)

White - Sparkling
2008 Dom Pérignon Champagne France, Champagne
95 points
One of the best young Doms ever? The nose is moderately reductive, and shows quite a bit of minerality (one of the first times I've picked that up). There's lean white fruit here, as well as some very pleasant floral tones. The palate is long and intense, with powerful, linear acids that drive the sweet and sour fruit to a long finish. This is not as broad and rounded as the 2002, but far more complete than the 2004. The vintage character shows fairly prominently here, as it does with the Krug 164. Fortunately, it's a good character, so no complaints here.

Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Billecart-Salmon Champagne Brut Rosé France, Champagne

The nose is fairly nice, but there are some high-toned elements that evoke marzipan or somesuch that I don't particularly care for. A fairly angular palate, but decent complexity and concentration.

2012 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
93 points
Dauvissat confounds me yet again. What a splendid bottle of Chablis here -- the nose is slightly tropical and has a bit of high-toned elements, but there's plenty of herbs, minerality, and tart fruit. The palate has that quality that I love with chardonnay -- broad and expansive with generous fruit, but also that linear acidity and mineral drive.

1996 Maison Roche de Bellene Clos Vougeot Collection Bellenum France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Showing long in the tooth. Earthy and tart red fruit, with a bit of metallic character on the finish.
White
2014 Athénaïs Chablis 1er Cru Montmains France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
88 points
There's a slight bit of yeastiness on the nose and palate here that I'm not as thrilled with. Nice minerality and intensity, but this sits a touch more towards the weird and natural side of things.
White
2004 Château Laville Haut-Brion Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Beautiful, aromatic nose, with a little bit of green and classic sauvignon blanc notes. A touch grassy on the palate, but intense and full-bodied. Tons of tropical fruit as well. Really nice power here.

2013 Elvio Cogno Barolo Bricco Pernice Ravera Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
90 points
High-toned cherry and a bit of modernist polish on the nose. The palate seems a little astringent, but I do like the fruit and the acidity here. Quite intense and complex, and the beautiful vintage shows. It's not my go-to nebbiolo style, but it is fairly good for it.

2002 Henri Boillot Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
95 points
Wow. This wine is insanely good. The fruit profile is fresh and delicious, with an incredibly rich powerful palate. So much fruit, counterbalanced with clean, mineral dirt. I just love this so much. The massive power here wows me, but the freshness of the fruit and the intensity of the dirt...
Red
1961 Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
93 points
The nose is the killer thing here. It's so aromatic, with lovely tertiary Bordealais notes -- cedar, plum, graphite, and all that good stuff. With additional air, there's a bit of menthol starting to pop up as well. The palate is good, but shows its age. Not in any fear of decline, but not picking up steam with time either. A pleasure to try, and this bottle was sound, but not outstanding.

2014 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Really intense reduction on the nose, oddly enough. Nice fruit, with some good red fruit that shows a little bit of green as well (in a good way). Tart cherries and raspberries. Absurdly young, and a little difficult to enjoy right now. Too tart and crunchy; this needs a lot more time for a truly fair evaluation. But don't get me wrong -- I am not debating the pedigree here.

1996 Les Forts de Latour France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Yeah, this is really classic Bordeaux. Intense graphite, black fruit, and power on the nose and palate. The acidity and freshness here off the charts. Dark fruit and fairly resolved tannins. This is actually drinking splendidly already.

2013 Louis Jadot Volnay 1er Cru Santenots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Opened the evening before, but only a minimal amount was poured out. The nose is crunchy, which a lot of juicy red fruit. However, this, too, is just too obscenely young right now. Still primary and a little grapey, but pretty damn tasty. Needs more time.

2008 Château Canon-la-Gaffelière France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Intense, inky black fruit on the nose. Clearly some modernist goings-on here. The palate is extremely extracted, with a lot of sweet black fruit and oak showing on the palate. Modernist and wacky.
Red
2007 Domaine Dujac Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

This is a bottle seriously right in the zone right now. It's smoking good, with some stemmy spice on the nose that is just classic Dujac. The softer palate makes this ready for drinking now, and the acidity, fruit, and earth are all in good balance here.

2014 Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Clos de la Chateniere Blanc Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru

Wow -- this is a smoking bottle of chardonnay, with lots of minerality and tart fruit. Very powerful and intense acidity with beautiful aromatics here. Really, really good -- so much tension and power here. This is genuinely electric and exciting.
