Introduction

Two terroir-driven producers from Chile.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

Red
2016 Montsecano Pinot Noir Refugio Casablanca Valley Chile, Casablanca Valley
90 points
Served too warm, this was rustic and had significant tannin. Plummy fruit and tart cherry. This seems very age-worthy, with a lot of structure right now. What will happen to this in 5 or 10 years?
Red
2016 Montsecano Pinot Noir Chile, Casablanca Valley
89 points
Like the Refugio at the same tasting, this showed structure and it was definitely a terrior-driven wine. It was more mellow than the Refugio, with significant spice. The wine is quite spicy.

Flight 2 (3 notes)

Red
2017 Maitia Aupa PipeƱo Chile, Maule Valley
90 points
A beautiful dark ruby pinot noir like color. This is not a highfalutin. Instead, it is purposeful, traditional and terrior-driven. Nice funk on the nose. There is some powdery feminine red fruit. There is also a bit of greenness present, that is more vegetal (not dill or bell pepper). This manages to stay fresh when served at a low temperature. There is a lot going on in this wine. I like the leanness and structure.
Red
2016 Maitia Carignan Weon Chile, Maule Valley
I am not a fan of carignan, and this bottle did not convert me. The profile seems mellow with slight oak, and then there is cloying fruit on the mid-palate/finish. This wine turned funkier with time in glass, such that is was rather funky vegetal and foul by the end. I am not impressed.
Red
2017 Maitia Carignan Weon Chile, Maule Valley
I don't get Carignan, and this is no different. Menthol, some red fruit, acid and funk. This seems green and herbal. I love Bordeaux funk but can't tolerate this vegetal funk.
