2001 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

#13-02, 8% abv. Light, green, herbal notes on the nose. Slightly minerally and slatey on the nose, a little bit of reduction, but not over the top. Quite lean on the palate, with just the right amount of sweetness to balance the acidity. It's nicely tart, but shows more of an intense minerality than fruit. (Unfortunately, this wasn't decanted, so it may have not shown as well as the others.)

#14-02, 7.5% abv. Compared to the GH sibling of the same vintage, this shows a lot more funk, as well as more reductive qualities. Aromatically intense, but not as outrightly minerally as the GH. On the other hand, there is a lot of power and intensity here. Plenty of acidity, but so gentle and intense at the same time. While the GH shows its awesome minerality, this is a far more complete package.

#12-06, 8.5% abv. Still shows a lot of sponti on the nose and palate. Very ripe and sweet, and doesn't show the same powerful cut as the 2001 version. The fruit is riper and there is more sweetness, less of the white fruit, and less of the acidity. On the other hand, it's still very intense and lean.

#11-06, 8% abv. To me, the weakest of the bunch. This is the softest and least structural of the flight (in the context of the lineup!) The fruit is sweeter, it's rounder, there's a lot more sweet stone fruit here as well. It's got a nice apricot tone, but this is the bottle that shows the least acidic cut. Some interesting citrus character here as well.

#16-02, 7.5% abv. Slight bit of honey and sugar on the nose, as well as plenty of sponti and perhaps a bit of pineapple. Clearly shows a little bit riper, with lovely minerality and sweetness here. There's still an intense herbal quality here, and while this ought to be sweeter, the acidic cut is still here in spades and this doesn't actually feel sweeter at all. Very refined and crisp.

#19-02, 7.5% abv. Definitely shows a bit of that earthy funk that this wine is famous for (perhaps it's the sponti?). Underneath the sponti is green herbs and some tart fruit, in a much more subtle and less overt expression. The palate here again is simply outstanding -- refined and balanced, with so much going on. It's never in your face -- this is gentle with a little bit of earthiness to add to all the fruit here. Finishes intensely long. Just not showing incredibly well today though, I think...

#14-06, 7% abv. There's almost a slight bit of spiciness on the nose here, but there's a lot of honeyed sweet fruit as well. Clearly sweeter and less overt cut than the 2001, with a bit of a sugared or candied quality here. Mouthwatering acidity helps to balance the fruit, but there's a slight hint of a more roasted character here than the very clean 2001.

#13-06, 8% abv. A slightly herbal nose here, with so much more sweetness than the relevant Spaetlese. It's very elegant, and there seems to be much more acidity to help cut it. There's a little bit of headiness here, so it feels like there's a slight touch of heat (but this is obviously in the context of the lineup). There's a little more ripe fruit here, and there's again a slight bit of roastiness that I'm not super fond of.

#19-06, 7.5% abv. Massive amount of sponti and reduction on the nose here. Again, this is not showing well at all. It comes across as a little bit simple, right now, and while it's more than a pleasant drink, it's definitely not one that I would count as a winner tonight.

2001 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

#22-02, 7.5% abv. From half-bottle. Not quite showing as well as I remember it to be. There's a fair bit of sponti on the nose here, and it seems unlikely to blow off anytime soon. The nose shows a mild herbal quality, but incredible complexity under the sponti. This is the sweetest and most intense of all the 2001 WS in the lineup, but there is very little botrytis here. It's lean and powerful, crystalline and pure, but not really open for business today.

#17-06, 7.5% abv. From half-bottle. Very intense mineral and herbal, and shows a lot more herbal than the 2001. In fact, this is far more expressive and powerful than the more restrained 2001. No more roasted qualities here -- sweet, honeyed elements, and intense length. Phenomenal now, but will obviously benefit from more time.

#18-06, 7.5% abv. From half-bottle. In comparison to the WS of the same vintage, the herbal elements show even more prominently here. It's not as richly intense as the WS, and shows a little bit greener and less ripe than the WS. Still, this has brilliant cut and is still an incredible wine in its own right.

Intense sweet cherry and cough syrups notes. The tannins are mostly resolved, but the alcohol is a little bit louder than I generally like.
