Pax Tasting

Three beautiful Pax wines enjoyed with friends.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

2012 Pax Syrah Castelli-Knight Ranch USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
95 points
The first in a flight of three Pax wines. Deep dark purple in color. Delicious aromas of fatty bacon and lavender which continue onto the palate with distinctly gamey notes. Long and satisfying finish. Wow, just wow! I cannot get enough of this wine and I'm still thinking about it a couple weeks later. The 2012 Castelli-Knight holds up well, if not better, when compared to its 100 point brother, the 2016 Sonoma Hillsides.

2013 Pax Syrah Griffin's Lair USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
92 points
The second in a lineup of Pax wines. The Griffin's Lair is more floral than the Castelli-Knight with lavender and roses. Very tannic - the 2013 took two hours to calm down. But wow, the underlying material is here. This is going to be superb, but it is going to take some time. I'm going to wait another 3-5 years before touching another bottle.
2016 Pax Syrah Sonoma Hillsides USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

The third in a lineup of three Pax wines. You can really understand the blend of the meaty Castelli-Knight and floral Griffin's Lair. Layers of fatty bacon, lavender, and black pepper spice on the nose that continue onto the palate. Soft tannins. This bottle of the 2016 Sonoma Hillsides was not as good as previous couple bottles I have had, but it was still good none-the-less. I'm always struck how in perfect balance all the strong flavors in this wine are. This wine is moving!
