Introduction

Lovely dinner with wine loving friends. Polenta and veal ragu and lots of homemade nibbles. Bottles were pulled from our cellars in an open that bottle mood.

Flight 1 (4 notes)

Red
2000 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon To-Kalon Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Lovely example of aged Cabernet. Totally under estimated how nice this wine this wine from my cellar would be. Big wine, supple, good character, definitely Cabernet. Lovely wine.

In a mixed style of the long aged creamy with good developed yeasty notes yet a background of fresh lively fruit and crispness.
White
2013 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Brand France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
94 points
One of best Alsatian Rieslings I have had in years. Wish I had built a meal around it to show it off. It got a bit lost in a night of many open bottles.
White
2015 Domaine Adrien Besson Chablis 1er Cru Montmains France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
89 points
Nice Chablis. Did have time to really linger over it but the glass I had hit all the right points.

Flight 2 (7 notes)

Red
2008 Lacoste Borie France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Past the drinking window but still slightly hanging in there. Developed more as the evening progressed. Paled in comparison to other wines on the table. Maybe prematurely age due to storage but I would not hold on to it any longer if I had any.
Red
1995 R. López de Heredia Rioja Reserva Viña Tondonia Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

Got deceived thought this was an old Pinot still drinkable but past it’s prime.
Red
1999 Robert Mondavi Winery Pinot Noir Huichica Hills USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
91 points
Big wow. Totally missed the age of this, yes it shows age but has great character. Stored in my cellar direct from the winery, so I think it has fared better than for other tasters that got it through retail channels. A hit in the tasting.
Red
2013 Alvaro Palacios Priorat Finca Dofí Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Pure cherries, very youthful. Lovely wine deep color and lots of texture.

Lovely claret, nicely developed and in its prime. Cherry and tobacco, great finish, very supple.
Red
2001 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon M-Bar Ranch Oakville USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
93 points
Totally wonderful, was a hit at the dinner. There is something about a Cabernet aged and in its prime where the fruit and complexity are there and the structure is pure velvet. Timing was right to open.
Red
2016 Ermitage du Pic St. Loup Pic St. Loup Tour de Pierres France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Pic St. Loup

I didn't bring it and had just had a bottle the night before from my cellar. Clearly the youngest red in the tasting but it did do well with the ragu, that said in a night of many great wines this was the last bottle finished.
