Wine Tasting Group - Burgundy - Nov. 18, 2018

Classic Wine Storage, Dallas, TX

Tasted November 18, 2018 by James Kim with 170 views

Introduction

We all gathered at Classic for Burgundy. Clare put together the wine list and obtained most of the wines with some additions from our own cellars. Chicken and carne asada tacos with vegetable plate and ranch dressing and hummus as accompaniments. David, whose portfolio includes a number of Burgundies, was also on hand to lend us his expertise and knowledge. All wines were slow ox'ed for 3 hours unless noted otherwise. A great and educational night!

Flight 1 - Reds (8 notes)

Red
2015 Danjean-Berthoux Mercurey Les Chavances France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Mercurey
90 points
Almost exuberant aromas of mildly candied red cherries, herbs, bark with a hint of cinammon. Palate is more mineral but still plenty of ripe red and black cherries accompanied by earth and herbs. Light almost ethereal texture with moderate tannins on the midpalate. Here, the fruit from the warm 2015 vintage definitely shines. Liked this.
Red
2012 Domaine Dominique Mugneret Echezeaux En Orveaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
92 points
En Orveaux is the most northern and coldest plot of the Grand Cru Echezeaux vineyard in the village of Flagey-Echezeaux. Herbal-umami aromas is the best way I can describe this with bark, hints of baking spices, parmesan cheese, and red/black cherries. A complex palate of red cherries, herbs, earth, mushrooms, minerals with prominent tannins on the midpalate. Compact and dense texture with excellent concentration of flavors with a nice long finish. Definitely young now but would love to see this in 10-15 years.
Red
2011 Simon Bize Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Grands Liards France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune
89 points
Aromas of herbs, red cherries, tea and dried brown leaves. Potpourri is what hits my palate first, followed by bark, earth and mild cherries. Elegant with moderate tannins on the midpalate. Someone mentioned chestnut skin which perfectly captured the midpalate on this.
Red
2014 Domaine Gérard Julien et Fils Nuits St. Georges France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges
88 points
Barnyard aromas that lessens with time and air in the glass. Also has some smoke and herbs with hints of red fruit. Palate had a creamy but lithe texture with mild tannins on the midpalate. Flavors of cherries, bark and herbs. A pretty wine.
Red
2008 Gérard Raphet Gevrey-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
92 points
Double decanted with about 1 hour in decanter. Initially very tart - cranberry juice without the cranberries. By the time we drank this, it was almost 3 hours since the bottle was opened. Balsamic aromas accompanied by dried red cherries, black cherries mixed with beef broth and earth (what I call sous bois), and strawberry licorice. On the palate, dried cherries, sous bois, hint of menthol. Elegant and lithe texture accompanied by mild-moderate tannins that give the wine some firmness. Iron fist in a velvet glove? Liked this more and more over time.
Red
2015 David Duband Morey St. Denis 1er Cru les Broc France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
89 points
Aromas of green stems, herbs, and some red cherry fruit. Palate showed much more red and black cherries accompanied by green stems, herbs, and tannins. Dense mouthfeel and concentrated. Rustic but there's also a lot here to unpack over time.
Red
2015 Nicolas Rossignol Pommard France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard
88 points
Pretty cherry aromas overlaid with a medicinal note. There's also some spiciness and herbs on the nose. Ripe cherries on the palate with some more medicinal notes. Nice acids and tannins accompany the medium to full bodied mouthfeel. However, the palate was fairly simple to me at this point with just dominant ripe cherries.
Red
2016 Benjamin Leroux Volnay France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay
90 points
Aromas of szechuan peppers, herbs, stems followed by cherry fruit. Nice ripe cherries on the palate, with some herbs, and dark chocolate. Nice acids with moderate tannins. Very smooth but still lively texture. Well done in a modern style.

Flight 2 - Whites (7 notes)

White
2008 Gérard Tremblay Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
92 points
Decanted for 1 h prior to tasting and kept open for ~1.5 h afterwards. Initially, a very strong parmesan rind aroma that dominated the nose. Was concerned that it might be flawed - not corked and not really badly oxidized. From David, learned that this is how aged Fourchaume behaves, which was quite new to me. By the time we drank the wine, it still had parmesan rind aromas but much lower in volume accompanied by mushrooms, apples, herbs with a hint of nuttiness. Palate had a mellow vibe with tart apples, hints of honeysuckle and nuts. Not as intensely mineral as young chablis but showing its age with a smooth, elegant, and mildly mineral texture. Complex and very much enjoyed this.
White
2014 Gilbert Picq & ses Fils Chablis Dessus La Carriere France, Burgundy, Chablis
89 points
Tart apple and lemon aromas with tons of minerals. Palate continued the tart apple and lemon them with some chalky minerals. Palate doesn't match the intensity of the aromas and was missing the telltale iodine/saline notes that I really love about chablis. Disappointing in that regard but still a very enjoyable drink.
White
2001 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
93 points
Aromas of creamed corn, butter popcorn, apples with some mild reduction. Palate with more apples, butter, minerals, mild honeysuckle on the finish with some bitter pith that adds a nice element. Very nice acids keep the wine lively. Complex with layers of flavor. Broad yet concentrated mouthfeel. David and Clare have had this several times and has shown better without the reduction. Still pretty darn tasty.
White
2013 Domaine Florent Garaudet Meursault France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
91 points
Tart apple aromas with a good dose of minerals and a hint of butter. Beautiful tart and ripe apples on the palate with meyer lemons, herbs and minerals. Finishes with fruit, minerals, and some butter. Broad texture but with concentrated flavors. Drinking well now but still young. Check in on my last bottle in another 5 years.
White
2013 Benjamin Leroux Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Murgers des Dents de Chien Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru
91 points
A bit reductive but very pretty aromas of minerals, flint, apples and flowers. Palate follows the aromas. The flavors are all so well balanced. A beautiful wine.
White
2016 Benoit Ente Puligny-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
90 points
Mineral, flinty nose, accompanied by tart apple, herbs and mild smoke. Palate had more tart apples, lemon, grapefruit pith, and minerals. Nice length and concentration with a more linear mouthfeel than the Meursault.
White
2016 Domaine François Mikulski Bourgogne-Aligoté France, Burgundy, Bourgogne-Aligoté
88 points
Lots of tart apples and some minerals in a rounded mouthfeel. Not that complex but delicious and quaffable. Just a happy wine.
