Monthly Tasting at Wine Wizards

Wine Wizards Stockton

Tasted November 29, 2018 by Woodbridge Brad with 105 views

Introduction

Not as many Kermit Lynch wines as usual, but the KL price point has lost its way in the chi-chi over priced world of the Bay Area with mediocre vintages at excessive prices. Wine Wizards has filled in with other nice values from other suppliers.

Flight 1 (12 notes)

Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Sommariva Venezia il Rosa Brut Italy, Veneto, Venezia
87 points
Lovely pink, very lightly sweet, berry fruit and balanced acid, with a clean finish and good mousse. At $13 a real value, perfect party starter.
White
2017 Scarpetta Delle Venezie Frico Bianco Italy, Delle Venezie
82 points
Soft and round with some flabby weight I was bored to death and did not finish the glass, reminded me of box white wine, not bad but not worth the time.
White
2017 Marchetti Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore Tenuta del Cavaliere Italy, Marche, Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore
86 points
A wine that needs the right food match to excel, in this case something savory and salty. Grilled octopus with sea salt and fava beans comes to mind (had that match in Milan one time). Rich and for me slightly short of acidity, nice weight and honeyed finish.
White
2017 Champalou Vouvray France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

A friend's favorite match to Tandori fish and various spicy curries. This was a very good vintage, very clean and fresh with peach and pear notes, good acidity and a just off dry finish under 1% RS. Didn't buy but I called my friend and gave him a heads up.
White
2017 Loosen Bros. Riesling Dr. L Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
87 points
I had this last month with Indian food (it worked nicely) and now in a tasting line up after a Vouray. The positioning after the Vouray, gave it more definition. Still it is a somewhat innocent and a relatively simple Riesling. However it more than makes up for it's modest complexity and varietal character by its very correct clean balance, lovely palette, it's lingering fruit finish and reasonable price ($13). I also think that it may gain in depth with some bottle time.
Red
2016 Scarpetta Wines Frico Rosso Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
82 points
Unfinished and rustic, I wanted to like this wine but frankly the real Chianti that was next in the tasting line up was so far better and almost the same inexpensive price. There is some Sangiovese character and softness, but the bitter notes in the mid palette and finish needed addressing by a competent winemaker. This wine could be much better.
Red
2015 Fattoria di Basciano Chianti Rùfina Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Rùfina
89 points
Awesome inexpensive young Chianti, dark color, sour cherries and spice. Great balance and finish, nice weight in the mouth and at $13 a nice everyday wine. Will age nicely for the mid term.
Red
2017 Kuentz-Bas Pinot Noir France, Alsace
84 points
Pinot Noir in a dark rose style. Okay but it needs more depth and character to be much beyond that, good acidity but modest flavor. For the price there are more interesting wines.
Red
2017 Régis Bouvier Bourgogne France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
85 points
More a bit personality than the Kuentz-Bas that preceded it, a decent, light, entry level Pinot with good balance and finish. However, for $24 I can find far better and more interesting Pinots from Oregon and some California producers.
Red
2016 Charles Joguet Chinon Cuvée Terroir France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon
84 points
Light and leafy not a bad vintage but not that good either, it did not inspire me much. Have a good selection of Chinon and other CF's in my cellar, will wait for other producers or maybe a new vintage.

White - Sparkling
2017 Tintero Moscato d'Asti Sori Gramella Italy, Piedmont, Asti, Moscato d'Asti
88 points
I have several bottles of the previous vintage and this is another lovely production. A situation wine because of its intense flavor and sweetness, great with fruit and the right people.
Red - Fortified
N.V. Berto Vermouth Ross da Travaj Italy
88 points
Although this is non vintage there are different production years. I just finished a large study of vermouths and this was slightly nicer than the previous production ( actually my wine merchant had a bottle open from the previous production so we did a side by side comparison). Lots of sweet spice notes as well as bitter sides.
