Introduction

Our Saturday group theme was once again uptown, so wines were to be of better quality than normal. We taste in flights randomly arranged from roughly light to heavy.

Flight 1 - Warm ups (3 notes)

White
2017 Girard Winery Mixed Whites USA, California, North Coast
88 points
Double blind. Grass, white fruit and lemon notes. Citrus and acid palate; medium finish. Guessed sauv blanc.
White
2014 Texture Chardonnay USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
Double blind. Aromas of citrus, mineral and florals. Crisp and focused; bright acidity. Guessed pinot blanc.
White
2017 JCB No 16 USA, California, Napa Valley
88 points
Double blind. Very tropical bouquet- coconut and banana- perhaps even lychee. An odd mix and it's throwing me off a bit. More tropical fruit on the palate. Medium finish. Develops a strong floral quality. Was leaning toward viognier but didn't really have a guess here.

Flight 2 - Reds (5 notes)

Red
2016 Walt Pinot Noir Sierra Mar Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands
90 points
Double blind. Ruby color. Notes of red pinot fruit, cinnamon and clove. Cherry, raspberry and warm spice flavors on the palate. Fairly obvious oak. My initial thiught was Santa Barbara County pinot, but I guessed Sonoma Coast.
Red
2005 Château Pape Clément France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
94 points
Double blind. Deep garnet core with just the slightest bit of bricking beginning to show. Graphite, red fruit, iron and tobacco notes. Has some tannin to integrate yet. Red fruit, rare beef, dark druit and earth on the palate. Balanced. Long finish. Guessed Pauillac.

Red
1996 Beringer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley
91 points
Double blind. Faded garnet color with notes of brambly red fruit and spice- almost peppery- somewhat zin-like at first. The bambly red fruit even follows through on the palare, aling with raspberry and herb qualities. Changes quite a bit in the glass, losing the brambleberry in favor of currant and red plum, even adding a subtle iodine note in the bouquet. more than a few of us ended up thinking this was Bordeaux. 91-92 pts.

Red
2005 Kistler Pinot Noir Cuvée Catherine USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
90 points
Single blind. Dark fruit notes, a touch of cinnamon and tea leaf, a touch hot. I suspect this is one of the Kistlers we opened. On the full side of medium-bodied. Dark pinot fruit and spice flavors. I initially rated this a little higher, but there's a subtle hint of soy that I'm not liking here. Very good, but not great, and yeah, easy to pick out as one of our Kistlers. This had been double decanted off its sediment about 1.75 hrs before the flight was poured.
Red
2012 Beringer Vineyards Merlot Bancroft Ranch USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain
90 points
Double blind. Clay, raspberry, dark berry fruit and dill. Shows a bit hot on the palate. Red fruit and berry flavors with a lengthy finish. Turns more ripe and plummy as it sits, and the dill note starts to overwhelm. I assumed this was a Silver Oak cab sauv.

Flight 3 - Reds (5 notes)

Red
2005 Kistler Pinot Noir Kistler Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
93 points
Single blind. Ruby color. Cherry and spice notes follow through on the palate. Really nice fruit here. Long finish; balanced. Lovely. Drink over the next 2-3 years. This had been double decanted off its sediment about 2.25 hrs before the flight was poured.
Red
2003 Paloma Merlot USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District
87 points
Double blind. Notes of cherry cough syrup with red berry fruit and plum. Ther's also a hint of something chemical/plastic. Iron, red currant and oak spice flavors. Meh.

Red
2010 Cain Vineyard & Winery Cain Concept The Benchland USA, California, Napa Valley
86 points
Double blind. Dark color. Aromas of black fruit, dill and buttered popcorn. Red and black fruit on the palate with nice underlying acidity, but also quite austere.
Red
2007 Château La Croix St. Georges France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
94 points
Double blind. Aromas of red fruit, iron and tobacco. Lovely Bordeaux nose. Medium-bodied, with a nice tannin structure for the fruit that's here. Red fruit, earth and iron. Long finish. Balanced. Lovely. I assumed this was another '05 Bordeaux.
Red
2016 Girard Winery Mourvèdre USA, California, Napa Valley
Double blind. Vanilla, herb and red fruit, turning more ripe, almost jammy, as it sits. Mixed fruit, vanilla and oak. No guess.

Flight 4 - Reds (4 notes)

Red
2011 Booker Vineyard Grenache The Ripper USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
88 points
Double blind. Dusty ruby color. Currant, pepper and spice notes. Red fruit and cherry; rather noticeable acidity. Chateauneuf crossed my mind but I guessed pinot.
Red
2013 Glaetzer Anaperenna Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
89 points
Double blind. Deep opaque inky color. Brown sugar and black fruit notes. More of the same on the palate. Firm tannin. Good for the style, but not my cup of tea.
Red
2011 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
70 points
Double blind. Cranberry, spice and red fruit notes. On the palate this is thin, disjointed and acidic. No guess.
