White - Sparkling
2011 Chartogne-Taillet Champagne Chemin de Reims France, Champagne
85 points
Disgorged August 2017, 5.5 g/L dosage. I've liked some of the other Chartogne-Taillets from this (poor) vintage, but this bottle is a miss for me. Overall, it's actually a very nice wine, with lovely fruit, acids, and chalkiness, but at the back end, there's a hint of chemically greenness that evokes the veins from sugar snap peas or something like that.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Dosnon Champagne Henri Dosnon Brut France, Champagne
83 points
Lots and lots of earth on the nose here. Feels a little yeasty and autolytic too. Palate is simple, and there's a lot of bready qualities as well. As far as champagnes go, perhaps a touch on the flabby side for me.
White - Sparkling
2002 Vincent Couche Champagne Brut Millésimé France, Champagne
85 points
Another champagne that's not really to my liking. Too rich, broad, and autolytic. There's some acidity to help this along, but it still goes too bready for me. Slight hint of bitterness on the finish as well.
Red
1998 Domaine Bois de Boursan Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée des Félix France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
90 points
There must have been a time where this was super fleshy and sweet and ripe, but this has now integrated fairly nicely. The fruit is mostly secondary -- it's sweet but not overly so, and there are some lovely herbal and earth notes as well. The finish does come off a touch alcoholic, perhaps due to the riper vintage. Not much funk here.
Red
2008 Joseph Swan Vineyards Pinot Noir Trenton View USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
90 points
Certainly a pinot in a very ripe, seductive style, with plenty of sweet black fruit, but this is actually handled in a very nice way. Plenty of spice, and no headiness at all. It's a riper wine, aging along nicely. I'm not sure what the secondary characteristics here will be, but this is in a lovely spot right now.

Red
2013 Guillaume Gilles Cornas France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
88 points
Hm, didn't like this as much as the last time I had it. I wonder if it's beginning to shut down. Plenty of the elements I like, especially with an emphasis on brine and olive, but the fruit is a little demure at the moment. Fairly structural, I think these oughtn't be opened anymore, at least for a while.
Red
2016 Domaine Faury St. Joseph La Gloriette Vieilles Vignes France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
90 points
A big step up from the regular, which was too carbonic for my taste. This is a far more intense wine, with more meatiness, more black fruit, and more characteristics that are typical for the region. Saline, with a vein of acidity that gives this a nice coolness. Quite delicious now, but I'll give the nod to the 2015.

Red
2001 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Santo Stefano di Perno Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
93 points
Initially a little unpleasant on the nose, leading me to worry this may have been slightly corked. Fortunately, that blew off, leading to a very pretty, red-fruited and delicate wine. Despite the lightness, there's concentration and intensity here, and the fruit is still quite generous.
Red
2010 Giacomo Fenocchio Barolo Villero Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
93 points
Brilliant, old-school nebbiolo. Immediately a very generous nose, with lovely red fruit and a beautiful perfume. The palate lives up to the promise, with that same sort of elegance. It's not a flashy, overt wine, but there is a delicacy and demure sort of beauty here that I really enjoy.
