Introduction

We had a nice group of eleven for this event and an interesting mix of domestic and French wines.

Flight 1 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Bérêche et Fils Champagne Brut Réserve France, Champagne
91 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. I had just had this a few weeks ago, and that was a particularly fine bottle. This one was very good, and it improved over 20 minutes in glass, but never achieved the same level of grace. Tart green apple, apple peel, citrus, chalk and a bit more oxidative character.

White - Off-dry
2004 Müller-Catoir Haardter Herrenletten Riesling Spätlese Germany, Pfalz
94 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. This was drinking beautifully, so bright and full of tingling wet stone minerality with a sense of spritz Amazing fruit with acidity that makes this incredibly vibrant. Fresh cut apple, wet stone, slate, petrol, pineapple, candied, balanced and long. Delicious and it has a long future ahead of it, but I don't know that it will ever be better than it is now.

Flight 3 (3 notes)

White
2014 Heydon Estate Chardonnay The Willow Single Vineyard Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
90 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. Fairly creamy on the nose, hay, stone, lemon, oak. The palate is similar, pastry cream, lemon, a bit flabby, mineral. I thought this did improve over the hour. 90+ to 91pts.
White
2013 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
93 points
Pale gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. Another very fine example of this wine; killer minerality on the nose with so much fresh sea air and salinity, lemon, brioche, pear, and mineral. The palate is vibrant and lithe, very crisp fresh fruit and tantalizing acidity, lemon, sea shells, pear, subtle cashew, brioche, long and lifted on the finish. This has such a nice presence and balance. Delightful. 93+ to 94pts and maybe undervalued at that.
White
2016 Rhys Alesia Chardonnay Santa Cruz Mountains USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Santa Cruz Mountains
91 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. Cedar, lime, citrus, tart, medium plus body, oak. Definitely has some oak, but it integrates fairly well over 30 minutes. Good acidity and a fairly lean style make this appealing for me. 91+pts.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

Red
2005 Beaux Frères Pinot Noir Willamette Valley USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
92 points
Medium red color with a 7mm transitionally bricked margin. PNP, drank a glass over 30 minutes plus. This was in excellent condition and drinking beautifully. The nose is quintessential Oregon pinot with red berries, dried earth, a perfume of crushed herbs, spice, dill, and flowers. The palate follows suit with the red berries and potpourri; medium body, elegant, mouthwatering. This is really in the sweet spot and should remain so for at least another 3 to 5 years.
Red
2001 Pride Mountain Vineyards Merlot Vintner Select Mountain Top Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County
90 points
Very dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over 40 minutes. Very ripe, dark fruits, cassis, blackberry liqueurm oak spice. The palate is high toned and seems to walk the edge of the line of containing its alcohol. This has a mouth coating palate, a true elixir of black and dark blue fruits, kir, blackberry liqueur and creme de cassis, gravel, wood tones, and spice. I enjoyed this but it was right on the line of my tolerance for alcohol and ripeness.

Flight 5 (3 notes)

Red
2001 Le Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape Domaine du Caillou Les Quartz France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
94 points
Dark red color. Splash double decanted. Drank 1 glass over an hour. This really is a lovely, classical CdP showing some maturity. Just a little air and this really shines with an attractive garrigue character, olive, kirsch, violets, dried cherry, and spice notes. The palate has a medium full body with a satiny texture, dark berry fruits, blackberry, cherry and plum, olive tapenade, soft tannins and some spice as this finishes oh so nicely. This is and has been in a good place now for several years, and I see no signs of decline. Should easily go for 5 years and probably more. 94+pts.

Red
2005 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
91 points
Dark red color. Drank a glass over an hour. Big scaled, peppery, black fruits, caramel. The palate is full bodied, big and very peppery on the palate and the finish; some heat, and lacquer with some grip to the tannins.

Red
2010 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
94 points
Very dark red color. Drank a glass over an hour. Well this is more typical Pegau. This bottle was heavily skewed to bret and barnyard, bordering on too much for even me. I like that complexity, but it still needs to allow the other elements to express themselves. Saddle leather, funk, more funk, perfumed and floral, dark less delineated fruit. The palate also brings on the funk and horse barn, saddle leather, very sleek texture, pepper, spice, long on the finish with plush dark berries and silky tannins. 93+ to 94pts.

Red
2005 Château Calon-Ségur France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
92 points
Very dark red/purple color. PNP; drank a glass over an hour plus. Nice wine, on the youthful side, not unexpectedly, and definitely in need of a couple hours of air. Earth, leather, cassis and graphite on the nose translates well on the palate, with the graphite being quite prominent. This is full bodied and deep, not fully expressive yet and clearly evolving in glass over the hour. 92(+)pts.

Red
2003 Château Branaire-Ducru France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
91 points
Very red/purple color. Slow-O for 4 hours. Drank a glass over an hour. This seemed to be drinking rather young. The fruit starts out rather muted, dark fruit, with pencil lead, oak and firm grippy tannins on a dense full body. These '03's have been a mixed bag recently. It seems like they had a window a couple years ago where they were more open, but the last few have been more shut down. Obviously that is a generalization, and I'm sure there will be variations. My feeling is that most still need a good dose of air if drinking now. Presumably these will be better a few years down the road. 91(+)pts.

Red
2008 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Éloge USA, California, Napa Valley
92 points
This is an interesting blend of CS55, CF25 M10 PV10, so it doesn't fit into a clear left or right bank blend. I found it pretty intriguing myself with a mix of fine shaved pencil, citrus peel, wet earth, wet cement, dried earth, blackberry, tart choke cherry, blood orange, on a medium full bodied frame. There's a little interesting twist mid palate with a green herb and citrus note. 92+ to 93pts.

Red
2005 Shafer Relentless USA, California, Napa Valley
91 points
A blend of 78% Syrah and 22 Petit Sirah. This drinking fairly well, but I think on the downward slope. There is some nice meat and blood meal on the nose with big blackberry and boysenberry fruits, lot of pepper on the palate, full bodied and powerful with some heat on the finish. This does have a silky glycerin infused texture.
Red
2009 Saxum Broken Stones USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
91 points
This was cold on serving and it did evolve as it warmed, but it was slowly. Some earth, deep and volatile, bold, blackberry, black currant. The palate is full bodied, big and concentrated, pepper, red velvet cake, ripe and lush black fruits huge pepper and spice. I don't get the fuss but it's not really my style, but obviously others love this.

Flight 8 (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2010 Garagiste Sauternes France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
89 points
Light gold color. From 750ml. Good, nothing special, but tasty and gets the job done. 89 to 90pts.
