Flight 1 (10 notes)

White - Sparkling
2004 Ruinart Champagne Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs France, Champagne
93 points
A precise and chiseled BdB. Still quite youthful with vibrant acidity and energy.
White - Sparkling
2002 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
94 points
Preferred this slightly to a '04 Dom Ruinart served side by side. Gorgeous full nose. Palate has plenty of ripe, round orchard fruit and toast. Dense and energetic. So long. Terrific.

1996 Trimbach Riesling Clos Ste. Hune France, Alsace

96/06 flight. More nuance and complexity on the nose of the 96 with stone and orchard fruit along with some light honey and diesel notes. Really pretty and layered. The palate is a bit softer relative to the 06, but still quite fresh with good complexity and length.

2006 Trimbach Riesling Clos Ste. Hune France, Alsace

96/06 flight. Full nose with fresh aromatics of orchard fruit, florals and mineral. The palate is so bright with crystalline purity and taut acids. Precise and long. Slightly preferred this to the more mature '96.

2010 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs-Gain France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

This has shown consistently over the past couple of years. A round and rich Chassagne with good mineral and fresh fruit interplay. It's a bit on the simpler side, but complete and wholly satisfying.

1999 Soldera (Az. Agr. Case Basse) Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

99/08 IGT pairing. Clearly more baritone and complex here. Pretty aromatics of ripe red and black cherry with a strong herbal component. Good concentration on the palate. Lots of nuance and layering. Quite good, but I'm not sure I get the hype.

2008 Soldera (Az. Agr. Case Basse) Sangiovese Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
92 points
99/08 IGT pairing. This was clearly younger and lighter than the more baritone 1999. Lots more red fruit and florals in this wine. The palate was lighter with Burgundian finesse and soft edges. Quite nice and pretty. Not worth the tariff though, IMHO.

2001 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Riserva Granbussia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
94 points
Decanted ~10 hours the poured back into the bottle and consumed ~2 hours later. This is so packed with intensity and still quite young. Huge, effervescent nose of muscular black cherry with fresh florals and new leather. The palate is round, rich and dense. Shows classic Nebbiolo flavors and purity, in a larger scale package that needs another decade to settle in. Fun to check in.

2004 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Cannubi San Lorenzo Ravera Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Something just didn't quite feel right with this bottle. I suspect it might have been lightly corked, but no one else at the table agreed. The nose is quite light with dull cherry, earth and an occasion trace of what could be TCA. The palate was again dull and muted. Sure it had the classic Barolo flavors you'd look for, but just muted. I suppose it could just be in an awkward spot. Decanted for ~3-4 hours. A mystery.

1983 Château Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

A pristine looking bottle. This was all about the ethereal, magical nose. Aromas of mature fruit loaded with aged cedar, wet tobacco leaf, smoke, old leather and bell pepper. The nose just kept going on and on. On the palate it was a bit lighter in concentration, as you might expect for the vintage, but totally complete with a seductive quality. Long finish.
