Odd, marmite and baked fruit nose. Earth. Medium/full, baked red fruit, moderate acidity, shortish finish.

Nose shows some pure, lightly creamy red fruit, vanilla, touch of spice and earth as it warms. Full bodied on the palate with ripe red fruit, soft acidity but enough to carry a good length lightly savoury finish.
2003 Château Pavie France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Nose shows ripe dark fruit, plum, vanilla. A touch of raisin. Palate is full bodied, soft and voluptuous with ripe dark fruit, a touch of alcoholic warmth, moderate acidity and a good length fruity finish. Interesting if not overly enjoyable.

Nose shows blackcurrant fruit and a touch of gravelly mineral. Palate is full bodied with ripe dark fruit, a touch of mineral, beefy notes, moderate acidity some firm tannins on the medium/good length finish.
2003 Château Rauzan-Ségla France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Nose is attractive with creamy red fruit, florals, a touch of caramel. Medium bodied on the palate, red-fruited, touch of spice, balanced acidity though the tannins do poke through a little on the finish on this bottle.

Flight 4 (3 notes)

2003 Château Cos d'Estournel France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
92 points
Darker fruited, cedary, something quite exotic here too. Medium/full bodied, dark cedary fruit, polished tannins, decent acidity, touch of caramel on the very good length finish. Excellent.

2003 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
92 points
A touch reticent on the nose - slightly smoky, red fruit. Complex but quite discreet. Medium/full bodied, lovely on the initial attack with lightly spicy red fruit, touch of mineral, very fine but still quite firm tannins, fresh acidity, excellent length finish. Lovely if in need of more time.

Flight 5 (2 notes)

2003 Château Batailley France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
87 points
Nose is slightly raising, with dark fruit, with the odd whiff of something a touch chemically. palate is better, dark-fruited, some chocolate, subdued acidity, medium length finish.
2003 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
84 points
Very ripe, candied red fruit on the nose, touch of smoke and mineral. Palate also dominated by candied red fruit, no acidity to speak of. Flat, lifeless and more than a touch dull. Disappointing.

Medium/deep gold. Rich nose, peaches, touch of orange marmalade. Weighty and rich on the palate but with lovely contrasting vibrant acidity carrying a long finish. Lovely.
