Lyon and Woodward Frenzy

Woodyville

Introduction

MUST visit dear friends and try to drink each other under the table, and EAT! and drink... This doesn't include a very interesting stop at Savage Grace in Woodinville: intentionally light bodied ~12% etoh wines mimicking Northern France: Loire and Rhone. We bought their Syrah and a Cab Franc that were VERY elegant. No notes...yet!

Flight 1 - The Herbfarm (7 notes)

"Truffle Treasure" was the theme and included 9 courses! Black truffle soup! Black truffle pierogi; macaron of whipped lardo, cranberry, and marigold! Ridiculous breads with truffled hummus; white winter sturgeon; chitarra cut pasta with Alba truffles! Sweetbreads & chicken skin with charred leek, pumpkin sauce, fennel pollen and what? shaved black truffles! PERFECTLY cooked secreto of hazelnut fed pork. Mountina cow cheese in pastry with truffled honey and bay leaf sabayon. Doug Fir frozen yogurt, Quince vinegar granite, and pickled apple. Truffled cheesecake. And lastly a hazelnut pastry with white truffle hot chocolate. 11:15pm, say goodnight!

First wine of the weekend and I didn't even hear or read what it was before tasting. Fascinating texture, almost oily mouthfeel made me do a double take. OOOH! It's a Gewurzt! Lemon, spice, honeysuckle, lychee, decent length and mousse. Very good QPR.

This has a nice open nose, white citrus, tropical fruit, peach and apricot notes on the palate. Great depth and almost sweet after the sparkler. Now-2023

Counterpoint to the Delille before it. Less oak, more verve and minerality. White citrus, green apple, unripe pear, saline, and chalk. Plays nicely with the Alba truffled pasta.

Ex-Chateau in 4/18, this magnum was tasted over 3+ hours during dinner at the Herbfarm. First tastes/glasses were from Coravin, then a decant. Glorious wine, brick edge, obvious age / secondary notes. Great balance and depth, fruit and savory, length and tannins. This is on plateau from mag and has 5 years, drink now from 750?

Such a contrast from the '99 St I we had open. MIGHT have made it hard to appreciate on its own. Deep berry pie, spice, and a smidge of earth. Nice structure gives it 5-7 years easy.

I'm surprised I liked this to the tune of 90pts. MAY have been the food pairing. Red > black fruit, along with some spice and verve! Now-2022.

Another new experience! Served fairly cool with desserts, this has a very light ruby color enticing nose of candied cherries, raspberry, cranberry, and crème de cassis. Nice acidity / freshness and probably long lived!

Flight 2 - Re-up my credit card at Delille (6 notes)

Great wines, why not commit for a few more years...

This is on the slightly "oily" and viscous side, with citrus and apple notes. Mineral and acid finish. Very nice wine!

One of the lightest reds of this trip, more red fruit than black with some spice, leather and earth notes. Modest tannins. Now-2021.

Liked this a lot until overshadowed by its big bros. at the winery. Nice depth of black and blue fruit with some stone, mocha and touch of oak. 2020-2026.

Woo-hoo! clearly a blend with some CF spice and florals highlighting the Cab Sauv and Merlot fruit. A little mocha and hint of oak frame the deep fruit nicely. Hard to resist now, but best 2020-2030.

OK Motz used my word from my notes taken at the winery: WOW! More depth and muscle, more cassis, more blackberry, more stone and some cedar. Great wine! 2020-2035.

On a previous trip to the Carriage house, this was a bonus pour and I was so impressed I asked for 2 (not knowing the $ details!). The guy comes back with a 3 pack in OWC, "you gotta have this!" Then Joe elbows me in the ribs and says, "check the price!" Whoa! Back to one bottle... Now this wine tis the coup de grace for the club tasting this day and it's smokin'! Massive crème de cassis, blackberry, spice, mocha and leather go on and on! I'm saving mine for 2023 or 2033!

Flight 3 - Cayuse and friends at the Woodwards (7 notes)

Everything was decanted for 1-3 hours and sipped with charcuterie, then herbed grilled flank steak; amazing!

Really a nice bottle with less funk than I've come to expect from Pegau. Ripe black fruit, Kirsch, garrigue, leather, and anise. Now-2022.

My WOTWeekend! Great depth and SOooo complex. I think 10 people in a room could name 5 descriptors each and there would be little overlap. The Cayuse funk is there but hides in the shadows of the dark fruit and savories. Wow again: 96+. Now-2025

Though "CFunk" is there, it's really well integrated with the black raspberry, Kirsch, stone, pepper and leather. Nice grip implies time left. Now-2026.

Perhaps the least funky of the Cayuse wines this evening, it has black currant, blackberry, black plum, and wet stone in spades. Mocha, earth, and spice hints over the great structure. This will make 25 years with proper storage.

Essentially a cheap look into our future! We'll try this again at our 10 year retro tasting in November. Now it's got hallmark notes of its origin and that's good enough for me. Some cigar box and graphite over cassis and black cherries. Not too tannic and reasonable acidity. Fun! Now-2024.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1989 Château Suduiraut France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Same as 9/18 notes and a pleasure to share. Apricot, dried pineapple, fig, honeysuckle, tiny Botrytis hit, and decent acidity. Bring on the Crater Lake blue cheese!
