Flight 1 - The Tasting (24 notes)

White - Sparkling
2009 Ca' del Bosco Franciacorta Vintage Collection Brut Italy, Lombardia, Franciacorta DOCG
87 points
Small glass, brief note. Stone fruit and ripe lemon with a hint of honeycomb. Good weight and length with a bright, but simple, finish. I enjoyed this wine, but did not find it lived up to its price tag.
Red
1996 Cascina Bongiovanni Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
87 points
Blind tasting, small glass, brief note. Mature red cherry throughout, more engaging on nose vs palate. More firm finish than I'd want for the level of fruit. Good weight and length. Probably no upside.
Red
1979 Le Colline Barbaresco Riserva Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
78 points
Blind tasting, small glass, brief note. Bit of dried rose petal on nose, but little coming across on palate. Past its peak.
Red
1999 Paitin di Pasquero-Elia Barbaresco Sorì Paitin Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
88 points
Blind tasting, small glass, brief note. Very pleasant mature red and black cherry with good+ weight and depth. Still somewhat more grippy than I'd want.
Red
1998 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
90 points
Blind tasting, small glass, brief note. More red vs black fruit with subtle spice hints. Age appropriate level of maturity with very good length and a powerful finish, even if still slightly firm.
Red
2000 Tenuta Sant'Antonio Amarone della Valpolicella Campo dei Gigli Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella
88 points
Blind tasting, small glass, brief note. Ripe mostly black fruit with faint sweetness, but didn't quite show the density and viscosity I typically associate with Amarone. Enjoyable now.
Red
2006 AR.PE.PE. Valtellina Superiore - Grumello Rocca de Piro Riserva Italy, Lombardia, Valtellina, Valtellina Superiore - Grumello
87 points
Blind tasting, small glass, brief note. Popped-and-poured. Charming nose of red fruits and floral hints. Light color, pale red fruit with moderate weight and intensity. Others seemed to enjoy this more.
Red
2005 Paolo Scavino Barolo Riserva Rocche dell'Annunziata Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Blind tasting, small glass, brief note. Burly red fruit with black cherry hints and sweet spice touches. Was there still some protruding new oak? Still too young, and I didn't find it particularly approachable, and so tough for me to assess.
Red
1999 Tommaso Bussola Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Tb Vigneto Alto Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
90 points
Blind tasting, small glass, brief note. Black plum with both sweet and savory spice. Very dense and concentrated while also balanced and nearly elegant. Very long finish. Upside from here.
Red
2011 Romano Dal Forno Valpolicella Superiore Vigneto di Monte Lodoletta Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Valpolicella Superiore
90 points
Blind tasting, small glass, brief note. Dense and powerful black fruit, showing lots of potential, but almost brooding right now. Cellar until 2026-.

2008 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Colonnello Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Blind tasting, small glass, brief note. Floral notes with red cherry that was trying to be more powerful black cherry. Easily identifiable as Barolo, but this came across as more modern styled than I remember from earlier bottles.

2012 Elvio Cogno Barbera d'Alba Pre-Phylloxera Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d'Alba
90 points
Blind tasting, small glass, brief note. I like the berry aromas and the flavors to start. Slightly less robust in the middle, but good+ concentration emerges on the finish. Very good now.
Red
2005 Domenico Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Blind tasting, small glass, brief note. Slightly more black vs red cherry with anise and allspice. Rich with good density. Finishes with a sweet character that didn't thrill me, although others enjoyed it quite a bit.

2012 Marchesi di Barolo Barbera del Monferrato Maràia Italy, Piedmont, Monferrato, Barbera del Monferrato

Red
2007 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
92 points
Blind tasting, small glass, brief note. Red berries and cherries throughout with savory spice hints and firmness that made me realize it was Barolo. Modern styled but so charming and elegant. This is a very polished and nicely complex wine. In its peak drinking window, enjoy over the next decade.

2007 Moccagatta Barbaresco Bric Balin Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
flawed
Blind tasting, small glass, brief note. Something was wrong here. This seemed much other, slightly roasted or cooked. No problems with the cork.
Red

92 points
Blind tasting, small glass, brief note. Lots of red cherry with a floral start, licorice and clove. Charming, understated old school style I particularly enjoy. Good+ length and weight, very good balance.

Blind tasting, small glass, brief note. Fully mature red cherry, seemed older and certainly on the simple side. Good weight.
Red
2001 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Bussia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Blind tasting, small glass, brief note. Bright red cherry with good weight and balance, finishing with bright energy and an expanding finish. Overall good+ balance now.

2004 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
92 points
Blind tasting, small glass, brief note. Very dense wine with lots of concentration and lots of complex notes showing already.Slightly closed down in the middle, but a very large scaled finish. Probably my favorite wine of the day. 92-93 point potential, I'd give this to 2024 or later.

1964 Pio Cesare Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Served blind to today's tasting group. Open 4 hours before serving. Very faded color. Great nose of dried rose petals, earth and memories of red cherry. Similar flavors, just much less exciting.

2006 Michele Chiarlo Barolo Cerequio Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Blind tasting, small glass, brief note. Fun red and black cherry start-to-finish. Starts off slightly simple, finishes with sneaky length and weight.
Red
2010 Conterno Fantino Barolo Sorì Ginestra Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Blind tasting, small glass, brief note. Broad array of black and red cherry aromas and flavors. Fleshy start, but this goes from open to closed in 5 seconds. There is a lot here, but very good+ potential (92-93 points?), but this needs until at least 2025, probably longer.

Blind tasting, small glass, brief note. Rich red and black berries throughout. Bright acidity and mineral textures through to long finish, with the fruit expanding and getting more fleshy. Good weight, good+ length. Upside from here, 2022-. 90-91 point potential.

Flight 2 - A Few Bonus Wines (6 notes)

Red
2008 Domaine Ponsot Chapelle-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru
Blind tasting, small glass, brief note. We knew French, easily identifiable as Burgundy. More red vs black fruit. with moderate ripeness, very good density, which made me think Grand Cru. But I also thought Morey-St Denis instead of Gevrey. Producer over terroir? Somewhat shut in the middle with a powerful finish hinting at nuance. Needs plenty more cellar time. 92-93 point potential.

2004 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
91 points
Blind tasting, small glass, brief note. We knew French, easily identifiable as Rhone. Maturing black cherry with black pepper and enough barnyard to make this interesting without detracting too much from its enjoyment.

White
2016 Kongsgaard Albariño USA, California, Napa Valley
Blind tasting, small glass, brief note. Tart grapefruit. I didn't enjoy this.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2012 Maculan Torcolato Italy, Veneto, Breganze
88 points
Tasting, small glass, brief note. Sweet, fresh apricot with a hint of honeycomb. Balanced, fun, but on the simple side.
Red
2015 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
90 points
Small glass, brief note. Mostly ripe red cherry with some black cherry hints. Certainly showing 1er Cru density, but with a charming and elegant weightlessness and lots of bright textures despite the ripeness. Better to cellar for at least another 3-5 years.

1994 Mayacamas Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Small glass, brief note. Enchanting old style Cali Cab with aromas showing mint, eucalyptus, ripe and maturing black plum and cassis. Similar flavors are almost as good, perhaps slightly less concentrated vs nose. Very good now.
