Introduction

This was the monthly large tasting goup event. The theme was Northern Rhone, CdP and Bandol, etc. We had two tables of 6 with a good mix of older wines from CdP especially. This was our first time at the new version of the old La Belle Vie space and for the most part the food was good save one big hiccup. The wines turned out to be flat out superb.

Flight 1 - Table 1 Wines and Flights (2 notes)

Champagne Flight

White - Sparkling
N.V. Gosset Champagne Brut Grande Réserve France, Champagne
92 points
Light golden color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. Boy this has some guts, very bright with tons of red fruit coming through on the palate; excellent energy with good acid, nice minerality too, very fresh, some pear on the back end. Loved this and can't wait for mine to arrive now. 92+pts.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Bonnet-Ponson Champagne Premier Cru Brut Rosé France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
90 points
Fairly deep salmon pink color. Small glass over 30 minutes. btock's bottle. A bit funky and some seashore dankness, kind of a dirty quality on the palate, chalk, more bold, slightly sour red fruits. A bit different styled, still solid.

Flight 2 - White Rhone flight (2 notes)

White
2001 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
94 points
Medium gold color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes plus. When these older CdP blancs are on, they really are exciting. This was one of those bottles, and it kept becoming even more expressive in glass over 30 minutes. Wonderful spice notes, white flowers, butterscotch, apricot, beeswax, tangerine, honeydew on the nose. The palate is rich, layered with awesome texture, more spices, apricot, hints of tangerine, lush and a little candied, still fresh and lively with a very long clean finish. Great bottle.
White
2015 Domaine Louis Cheze Condrieu Cuvée Pagus Luminis France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
91 points
Drank a small glass over 30 minutes. Lovely typical aromatics, earthy, brine, lychee, white fruits. The palate is round and bright, good acid, adds lemon grass, just a little alcohol on the back end. 91+pts.

Flight 3 - CdP Flight 1 (2 notes)

Red
1989 Les Cailloux (Lucien et André Brunel) Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
94 points
Medium plus orangish brick red color. PNP, drank a glass over 2 hours. Same bottle as Chablis28 and I agree with his take on this. I found the perfume quite captivating from the outset, leather, potpourri, cherry, garrigue, medium plus bodied and fully resolved tannins, nuanced and fully mature in great shape. Started to show some heat after about 90 minutes in glass. Part of a trio of older CdP's, ('94 Beaucastel, '95 Pegau) that simply just shined in all their glory. Will the wines of today ever approximate what we experienced here tonight? Hopefully at least the classicists will.
Red
1998 Bosquet des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chantemerle France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
flawed
Same bottle as btock. Having had a beautiful example of this before, this is clearly not right. Very, very vegetal, stewed fruits pruny, very advanced.

Flight 4 - CdP Flight 2 (2 notes)

Red
1994 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
95 points
Medium dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over 2 hours. Another rock star in a trio of outstanding mature CdP's, with '89 Les Cailloux and '95 Pegau. This wine was every bit as good and maybe a bit better with four more years of age than my last one. If only we were drinking these beauties more often. Gorgeous, nuanced, saddle leather, floral perfume of garrigue, violets, and spice, red fruits. The palate is wonderfully integrated, silken texture, elegant wood spices and garrigue notes mixed with still pretty red and darker red fruits, ultra fine tannins, long on the finish. A seamless wine that together with the '95 Pegau made you weak in the knees.

Red
1995 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
95 points
Dark red color. Excellent cork. PNP, drank a glass plus over 2 hours. Now hitting the trifecta with this spectacular trio along with the '94 Beaucastel and '89 Les Cailloux. Holy cow, this takes everything even a half step further for me. The Pegau adds to the complexity with iron, iodine, earthy with the slightest sense of funk, perfumed, garrigue, red cherry and berries, my word this glorious. The palate takes the nose and expands on it, another seamless beauty with great Provencal character, minerals, pretty red fruits, satin texture, really layered, anise, hints of dill and mint, a bit savory with a little roasted meat, wow - this is balanced and has very polished tannins. While this is in a great place, I would surmise that well stored bottles might go another 10 years. Loved it 95+pts to 96pts.

Flight 5 - Northern Rhone Flight (2 notes)

Red
1988 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
95 points
Very dark red color. PNP, drank a glass plus over an hour plus. This was a classic, first class example of mature Hermitage. Spot on, graphite, dark berries, black and blue, meat, blood, bacon fat, soft and textured, smoky, cassis, white pepper. Beautiful. Another mature wine with miles to go though. Drank next to the kid brother '95 which was considerably more youthful.

Red
1995 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
93 points
Very dark red color. I think this was PNP, but not sure. Drank a glass over an hour. Note taking was fading at this point but, this was deep and full bodied, more black fruit showing, good earth and soil character, touch of dill weed, tannins are still firmer and the oak is more noticeable. A couple hours of air is advised currently.

Flight 6 - Dessert Flights (1 note)

Red - Fortified
1985 Graham Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
92 points
Small pour. Intense, quite good, dried dark berries, raisin, plum, caramel, brown sugar, medium bodied, fig, well balanced and vibrant on the finish. 92+pts.

Flight 7 (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
1996 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
92 points
Small pour. Dark gold color. Orange marmalade, oranges, citrus peel, baked peach, honeycomb-waxy, sweet and fairly unctuous, spiced. 92+pts.

Flight 8 - Table Two Wines - Small pours (6 notes)

Red
2005 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Small glass. Hi toned nose, roses, perfume, smoky, deep red fruits, underbrush; The palate is gorgeous, soft and luxurious, dark red fruits, generous, classically spiced, garrigue, classy. Really a nice bottle with upside..

Small glass. Denser and fuller than the '05, still mostly red fruit, but a mix of darker fruit too, good Provencal character, nice floral perfume, minerals and more acidity. Great flight though I give the slight edge to the '05 currently.
