Flight 1 - White to Start (1 note)

White
2016 Domaine Chante Cigale Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
85 points
Tasted blind. Fat and extravagant, on the tropical side. Hot on finish. Not a style of wine that thrills me.

Flight 2 - Mid-Aged Flight (3 notes)

Red
1995 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
90 points
Single blind in flight. Black cherry with earth and roasted meat aromas. Nose better than palate, which has slightly more earth and dirt. Much more advanced than it should be for its age. or the last time tasted 3 years ago. Possibly slightly stewed, or an advanced bottle?

Single blind in flight. Open three hours before serving. Lots of black cherry, some berry on nose and palate. Very dense and powerful with some roasted meat. Some brett hints, which were not all bad. Lots here, but not nearly as seamless as previous bottles.

2003 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée da Capo France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
96 points
Single blind in flight. Ripe black plum and berries with dark chocolate, anise and liqueur hints with slightly sweet spice. Despite all that richness and ripeness, this easily retained balance and charm with incredible length and an expanding finish. I enjoyed this 5 years ago, and was simply wowed by it tonight. Consensus WOTN.

2007 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Combe des Fous France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Single blind in 2007 flight.. Black cherry and plum with good concentration and balance. Bit of earth. Good now, but I don't see any upside.

2007 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape Deus-Ex Machina France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
88 points
Single blind in 2007 flight. A perplexing wine. Mature black fruit with lots of liqueur and very impressive concentration, good+ length. But also a bit pruney and oddly bitter. Slightly lacking structure, but will its shear density carry it through? This didn't thrill me tonight, but is there upside?

2007 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée da Capo France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
89 points
Single blind in 2007 flight. Very ripe, very mature black fruit with subtle sweet spice. Good balance, moderate structure. Disappointing given its reputation. doubt there is any upside. Not even close to the quality level of the amazing 2003 in the previous flight.

Single blind in 2010 flight. Black and blue berries with a rich dollop of sweet spice, dark chocolate, black pepper and espresso. Good weight, very good length and impressive balance. Very good now, with upside.

2010 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape Deus-Ex Machina France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Single blind in 2010 flight. Lots and lots of black fruit with very muscular structure, very backward character. Spice hints throughout, but this is just hinting at its full potential. Probably my least favorite of the flight, but possibly the greatest potential. 93 points tonight, but there might be 94+ point upside from here.

Single blind in 2010 flight. Very ripe, very dense and powerful. Sweet and savory spice coming out, particularly on finish. Very good now.
