Flight 1 (4 notes)

Tapas tour of Logrono

White
2003 R. López de Heredia Rioja Blanco Reserva Viña Tondonia Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
90 points
Usual Tondo oxidative richness but just a little flat. Possible that it didn’t get the chance to open up before being consumed, but on this one glass, open and pour showing, it could do with a little more energy. ***1/2
Red
2015 El Sacramento Rioja Selección Jesús Madrazo Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
90 points
Rich and plummy. A little lift on the nose from the 12% Graciano. Smooth. ***1/2
Red
1995 Bodegas y Viñedos del Contino Rioja Contino Variedad Graciano Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja
91 points
Still a deep, dark, brooding monster of a wine, though starting to soften and now very approachable with food. Deep, rich, plummy with a finely tannic frame. Long and fragrant. ****
Red
2006 R. López de Heredia Rioja Reserva Viña Tondonia Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
92 points
Dark, surprising rich and velvety for a Tondo, but that’s its youth. Certainly drinkable and enjoyable but really needs another decade or so for typicity. ****

Flight 2 (2 notes)

Terete, haro

Red
1973 Bodegas Muga Rioja Reserva Prado Enea Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
91 points
Pale garnet, fading at the rim to more of an orange. Bright and vibrant. Classic old leather, spice and orange peel nose. Follows through to the palate. Good acidity, but the fruit is starting to show a little threadbare. Harmonious and gentile, but not quite the belle it once was. (*)***
Red
2004 La Rioja Alta Rioja Gran Reserva 890 Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
93 points
I'd feared that this was going to be an oaky bruiser, but no, a gorgeous wine. Young yes, but very smooth and quite plush, enveloping one in folds of soft velvet. A touch of vanilla, quite dark red fruit, bright acidity keeping everything in line, and a long plum and mulberry fruited finish. Super. ****

Flight 3 (6 notes)

Rekondo, San Sebastian

White - Sparkling
2008 Delamotte Champagne Blanc de Blancs Millésimé France, Champagne
93 points
Pale. Good stream of fine bubbles. Very nicely chalky and precise with a fine grip. Long and lithe though it should have no trouble filing out with age. This is a lovely Delamotte and very promising. ****

Red
1987 La Rioja Alta Rioja Viña Ardanza Reserva Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
92 points
Showing well. Pale mid garnet, spice, warm leather and a good line. Fresh and quite bright acidity. Fruit there, but without the depth or plushness to round things out fully. Very similar to a bottle 30 months ago. ****
Red
1976 La Rioja Alta Rioja Reserva 904 Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
91 points
A cleaner and brigher bottle than 30 months ago, but fading a little in to its range peel character. The fruit and spice aren't quite there to balance. fading gracefully, but this bottle is slightly past its best. (*)***
Red
1976 Bodegas Muga Rioja Reserva Prado Enea Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
91 points
Similar to the 76 904, and consistent with a previous bottle six years ago. This is fading slightly, similar style to the 904, but ever so slightly clipped by comparison. Still just about (*)***
Red
1987 Bodegas Muga Rioja Gran Reserva Prado Enea Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
94 points
Ooh yes, here's the star of the show. Mature but fully fruity, a really lovely plush and moderately dense velvety textured PE. Seems the sweetspot is around 30–35yrs for a good vintage of PE. Just very harmonious, giving and complete. ****1/2

Red
1982 Bodegas Alejandro Fernández Ribera del Duero Tinto Pesquera Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
Slightly mushroomy, trad styled 'old Rioja' which isn't. Only noted briefly and in passing with a view to being in charge of the car keys in the morning. (**)*
