Flight 1 (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
2002 Foreau Domaine du Clos Naudin Vouvray Pétillant Brut Réserve France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray Pétillant
Served double blind.

Apple juice concentrate. Oak. But has a lot of energy. Over time it became much more elegant anad even some toasted hazelnuts showed up. Guessed champagne with some age.
White - Sparkling
1988 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Vintage Rare France, Champagne
Served double blind.

Lots of almond fudge and butterscotch, toasty, a little bit of orange rind preserves, at the end candy like and short finish, but overall this was very good. Guessed champagne from Bouzy producer late eighties. Recommended.

Flight 2 (3 notes)

White
2013 Arnaud Ente Meursault Clos des Ambres France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
Served double blind.

Lots of new oak that's not fully integrated, grilled hazelnuts, butter, almost to the verge of rancid butter but it blows away. Delicious and elegant, clearly chardonnay of high caliber, but the fruit is almost too thin for the new oak. Many guessed new world chardonnay. Will be better with time. Good clean finish. My guess: Bouchard Meursault 2007.
White
2006 R. López de Heredia Rioja Blanco Viña Gravonia Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
Served double blind.

Oxidative nose, but vibrant and full of energy. The complexity of having stayed for years on old oak barrels. Some spice. Low acidity. But lovely. I guessed Tondonia - Gravonia 2003, so almost on target. Highly recommended.

White
1995 Kalin Cellars Chardonnay Cuvée L USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
Served double blind.

Lovely deep fragrance with a lot of complexity, some thinner, grassy notes, on the palate it feels more like its over the top with a fermented pineapple/canned peach flavor and a finish that is not so much in balance. I guessed old white Bordeaux or perhaps (after hearing other people's guesses, Chenin Blanc from Loire or Pinot Gris or an Alsace field blend from Marcel Deiss.

Flight 3 (2 notes)

White - Off-dry
1993 Foreau Domaine du Clos Naudin Vouvray Demi-Sec France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
Served double blind.

Smells of wet dog and old yellow apples. Not as much fun as the next wine, and considerably dryer in how it felt, although both were the same Demi-sec wine but different vintages. Very good acidity still. Before food pairing this felt fresher, but with the foie gras (served on butter fried brioche with an onion cream, some portobellos, apple compote and Piemonte hazelnuts) the second wine was clearly the winner and this felt more ordinary. Guessed Chenin Blanc from Loire, but too a large extent because the person who brought these two wines is famous in our tasting group for always bringing Chenin from Loire...
White - Off-dry
1989 Foreau Domaine du Clos Naudin Vouvray Demi-Sec France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
Served double blind.

Honey, saffron, ginger spice, felt tired and lacking in acidity - until the food pairing which was excellent. Guessed Chenin Blanc from Loire for same reason as the previous wine. Recommended.

Flight 4 (4 notes)

Red
2009 Giuseppe Quintarelli Valpolicella Classico Superiore Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Valpolicella Classico Superiore
Served blind.

This wine keeps on changing in a very surprising and joyful way - this is the third bottle I have opened from this vintage and it has shown me three different faces each time already. Each as lovely as the previous, but different. So no wonder I had no inclination that this was my wine (although out of 7 red wines, I had brought two, so the odds were not low). Some sweetness of the berries, leather, some alcohol, not so deep in color, with a herbal note that I had not noticed before. Seamlessly integrated and of the highest quality. My guess was a Vieux Telegraphe from a cool vintage like 2007 or 2010. Highly recommended and just barely beaten by the 2011 Buccella for WOTN in my book.

Red
2011 Buccella Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
Served double blind.

Clearly a Bordeaux blend. Quite strong at first with pipe tobacco and blackberries. At first I guessed Cabernet Sauvignon, but the soft tannins with great fruit made me rule out left bank so I ended up guessing that this was a 2005 Saint Emilion of finer pedigree. So yummy and great now and great later. WOTN for me. Highly recommended.

Red
2011 Maison Ilan Mazoyères-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru
Served double blind.

Much more transparent color than the Buccella Cabernet Sauvignon and the Clos de l'Obac served side by side. The dark wild berry driven nose made me think of Morgon Côte de Py 2010 by Foillard or such producer. When I went back to the wine later on there were more raspberries and a stemmy note that made me (second)guess (myself) and had this as Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir. Highly recommended if you can find.
Red
2005 Costers del Siurana Priorat Clos de L'Obac Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Served double blind.

Competed with the Amarone for the biggest wine of the evening. I had this down as a cabernet of max 10 years of age from Napa valley. There's some heat on this and a lot of grip. Fruit is a little sweet and sour. Will be great in ten years or so. Right now it was a little much, but could probably be great with some grilled or bbq meat.

This vintage contains:
35% Grenache
35% Cabernet Sauvignon 10% Merlot
10% Cariñena
10% Syrah

Red
2000 Château Larrivet-Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Served blind.

Great nose, unmistakably Bordeaux, some graphite, some cassis, animal tones, elegant to the point of feeling a bit thin on the palate. Such a nice sniffer. I guessed Médoc from 2007 or so. Recommended.
Red
2008 Cerbaiola (Salvioni) Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Served double blind.

Lots of structure and berries but also quite structured and slightly bitter. High quality obviously. I went back and forth between guessing that this was my wine and that it was something else (Like a northern Rhône). In the end I felt that this had more quality than the first wine, but that it was not as ready to drink. Which probably is a correct judgement :) Recommended.
Red
2007 Brigaldara Amarone della Valpolicella Case Vecie Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella
Served double blind.

Fiery, leathery, lots of deep sweet berries and dark fruit. Lots of new oak not integrated yet. I guessed a Col d'Orcia or similarly oaked Brunello from warm recent vintage.

White - Fortified
N.V. Bodegas Tradición Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Palo Cortado Muy Viejo Superior a 30 Años Spain, Andalucía, Jerez-Xérès-Sherry
Served double blind.

So much complexity. And freshness. Obviously a sherry - I ruled out dry Oloroso for the reason that it had much more of a fino feel. So either Palo Cortado or Amontillado. Of some age and pedigree. Really great stuff. Highly Recommended.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Château Rieussec France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Served double blind.

Great finish, deep golden color very much in balance with sweetness, freshness and spice and saffron. I guessed a Suduiraut 1998.
Recommended.
