Manzoku Japanese Restaurant

Introduction

A Burgundy vs Rest-of-the-World tasting of Chardonnay
18 wines across 9 flights each with a Burg and a “New World”

My contribution: Domaine Amiot Guy et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet Les Vergers 2009

To respond for each flight:
- Which is the Burgundy?
- Which do you prefer?

Flight 1 - Winner - Australia (2 notes)

Fontaine - 8 votes
Bass Phillip - 9 votes

My Burg guess: Correct

White
2011 Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
93 points
Bright, fresh nose with apricots, honeysuckle, and clay, and gets riper as it breathes. Fairly intense apricots, nectarine, and stones. Finished fairly long. Good!
White
2013 Bass Phillip Chardonnay Estate Australia, Victoria, Gippsland
90 points
Quite vegetal to start, but the bright fruits came up quickly, with lime, peach, nectarine, and some bread notes towards the end

Flight 2 - Winner - Italy (2 notes)

Aegerter - 7 votes
La Spinetta - 10 votes

My Burg guess: Correct

White
2010 Jean Luc et Paul Aegerter Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
92 points
Citrusy, and some apples and peach, with some cloves and cinnamon sprinklings. Good finish of peach and some sugar plums
White
2015 La Spinetta (Rivetti) Langhe Chardonnay Lidia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
88 points
Lots of elderflowers in the nose at first, but quickly deteriorates to acids and cheese. Lemon and lime on palate. Quite a short finish but sugar plums lingering

Flight 3 - Winner - Australia (2 notes)

Drouhin - 5 votes
Leura Park - 12 votes

My Burg guess: Wrong

White
2002 Joseph Drouhin Meursault 1er Cru Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
92 points
Literally liquid apple strudel, with cooked apples, cinnamon, cream cheese, almond, and bread. Good acidity, making it pleasant despite it’s age
White
2008 Leura Park Vintage White Reserve Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Geelong
92 points
Somewhat greenish - green apples, lemon, limestone, bread yeast, some herbs and cloves. Very surprised to have such freshness given its age! Good!

Flight 4 - Winner - USA (2 notes)

Grgich Hills - 10 votes
Amiot Guy - 7 votes

My Burg guess: Correct
* Guessed correctly that this would be the Amiot Guy I had brought along

White
2013 Grgich Hills Chardonnay USA, California, Napa Valley
95 points
Huge and flamboyant, with nectarine and red apples, banana and mint. Good acidity which ensures it’s still fresh. Beautiful!
White
2009 Domaine Amiot Guy et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
88 points
Nose was rather mild and hard to pick out the fruits, but got the clay and stones. Some apricots and nectarine. A Burg that clearly is falling off its hill. Quite a pity

Flight 5 - Winner - Australia (2 notes)

Oakridge - 13 votes
Bouchard - 4 votes

My Burg guess: Correct

White
2015 Oakridge Chardonnay 864 Funder & Diamond Vineyard Drive Block Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
84 points
Smoked, funky nose, somewhat like it was oaked in an overcharred barrel. Dominated by flint and smoke on palate with a bit of apples and peach. Did not find it well-made
White
2015 Bouchard Père et Fils Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières Domaine France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
89 points
Rather mild, but some distinctive apricots, red apples, and banana on palate with bread and clay undertones

Flight 6 - Winner - Burgundy (2 notes)

W Fèvre - 11 votes
Jordan - 6 votes

My Burg guess: Correct
* Managed to place a correct guess for Chablis 1er Cru also!

White
2014 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
91 points
Somewhat green and leafy, and had limestones and brine. A touch of nutmeg and herbs completes it
White
2015 Jordan Vineyard & Winery Chardonnay Russian River Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
92 points
Peach driven, with a bit of apples. Nice whiff of mint, that makes it rather refreshing

Flight 7 - Winner - USA (2 notes)

Kistler - 9 votes
H Boillot - 8 votes

My Burg guess: Correct

White
2015 Kistler Chardonnay Les Noisetiers USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
92 points
Very intense and having ripe apples, pineapples, and mango. Some leaves on the undertones
White
2011 Domaine Henri Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
87 points
Acidic and heavily oaked and leafy, with quite some nutmeg spices, lemon and a bit of peach. Too green and uncharacteristic of Puligny

Flight 8 - Winner - Australia (2 notes)

Verget - 7 votes
Pierro - 10 votes

My Burg guess: Correct

White
2009 Verget Chablis Grand Cru Bougros France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
88 points
Ripe with apricots and pineapples, and a good balance of greens and clove spices, with a hint of smoke. Seemed too ripe for a Chablis though, even if Grand Cru...
White
2012 Pierro Chardonnay Margaret River Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
90 points
Fairly light but ripe and fairly focused, with pineapples, sugar plum, and salad leaves

Flight 9 - Winner - Australia (2 notes)

Leeuwin - 10 votes
Verget -7 votes

My Burg guess: Correct

White
2015 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
93 points
Light bodied, and whilst having ripe pineapple and mango, it also has the cool minty scent. Adding in a touch of brine and cloves, makes it an enjoyable Chardy

White
2009 Verget Corton-Charlemagne Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
91 points
Cool minty scent and greens, as well as some peach and apricot. Surprisingly light, considering that it comes from the hills of Corton

Closing

Enjoyable dinner.

Indeed a “Judgement of Paris” - the New World took this hands down (margin of 22 votes)

Personal achievements:
- Identified Burgs in 8 out of 9 flights
- Identified the Amiot Guy that I brought
- Identified a Chablis 1er Cru
