Il Molino di Grace

Parco dei Principi, Rome

Introduction

Interesting tasting conducted by the enologist Franco Bernabei. Good, solid Chiantis, with the expected typicity. My favourite was the Gratius (but no one could understand why this 100% Sangiovese wine, produced in a Chianti region vineyard, was marketed as a Supertuscan). Never mind; it was still a good "Chianti".

75% Sangiovese, 25% Merlot. Purple core, ruby rim, dense. Ripe/confected fruit, aromatic herbs, savoury notes; intense to start, intensity diminishes with time in the glass. High acidity, high alcohol, rich/smooth tannins, full bodied, good palate weight, good length and complexity. Clean, nicely made; no oak. Did not improve in glass; best at first pour.

86 points
Ruby in colour. Nose and palate of violets, dark/ripe/confected fruits, earth and oak. Same on palate, plus licorice; bright/slightly sharp acidity, medium level of smooth tannins, highish alcohol. Nice length and reasonable complexity. Should be great with a Tuscan-style meat dish.

2004 Il Molino di Grace Chianti Classico Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
84 points
Ruby. On nose, light fruitiness and some minerality; cola and tobacco; all very subdued and did not develop much with time in the glass. Highish acidity, medium level of rough tannins, moderate alcohol. Simple, not perfectly balanced, missing the mid-palate.

2004 Il Molino di Grace Chianti Classico Riserva Il Margone Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

Ruby coloured. Nose of wet animals that blew off somewhat, revealing berry fruit, vanilla, roasted character, mint and aromatic herbs. High acidity, lots of minerality, including NaCl. Seems a little watery and thin, light in body. Bernabei said it needs time in the bottle, but I don't see how it can put on weight.

2005 Il Molino di Grace Gratius Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
88 points
Ruby. Intense nose of flowers, fresh fruit (berries, plums), vanilla. Nice bright flavours, good/high acidity, low tannins, medium body, elegant. Good use of oak in the winemaking. Seemed very simple at first, but put on weight and complexity with time in the glass. Nicely made, but it stopped a little short.

2004 Terre delle Falcole (Il Molino di Grace) Le Falcole Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
83 points
50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot; 25% Syrah. Ruby, dense. Odd floral, cheap perfume-like smell to start. This blew off revealing some nice earth, minerality, menthol and tobacco. Palate not great -- high acidity, unbalanced.
