Introduction

A range of great Burgundies and Bordeaux without a single flawed bottle which is incredible given the ages of the wines. A very lucky night!

Flight 1 (1 note)

White
1998 Nikolaihof Riesling Steinriesler Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
94 points
Gorgeous wine. Round body with a touch of sweetness and lovely acidity.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

White
1989 Château Laville Haut-Brion Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
97 points
Gorgeous wine. The first thing that stands out is the mouthfeel which is like ultra fine tannins driven by the almost effervescent acidity. A long finish of orange peel.
White
1990 Château Laville Haut-Brion Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
93 points
Rounder and fruitier than the gorgeous '89. The '90 has a bigger nose but shorter finish. The mouthfeel is a bit waxy.

Flight 3 (2 notes)

White
1986 Domaine Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Ruchottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
94 points
Lots of acidity. Caramel and hazelnut notes. Long persistent finish. The acidity overwhelms the flavors a bit. Better with food.
White
1989 Domaine Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Ruchottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
95 points
Less acidic than the 1986. Rounder, more caramel and nutty flavors. A smokey finish. Died down relatively quickly in the glass.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

White
1990 Coche-Dury Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
92 points
Both the 1990 and 2003 tasted alongside it were very fragrant on the nose. Both were big round wines with prevalent oak and vanilla. More brute force than elegance.
White
2003 Coche-Dury Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
91 points
Both the 2003 and 1990 tasted alongside it were very fragrant on the nose. Both were big round wines with prevalent oak and vanilla. More brute force than elegance. The '03 showed the signs of the very hot vintage.

Flight 5 (3 notes)

Red
1962 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
98 points
A phenomenal nose! I could not stop sniffing this, just intoxicating. Red cherries with some smoke and bacon and hoisin sauce. So smooth.
Red
1964 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
93 points
This wine had the misfortune of being wedged between the spellbinding 1962 and 1971. Comparatively it had a much more muted nose. More mature and evolved than the '62 and '71 but still very much alive and a lovely mature wine with real class.
Red
1971 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
97 points
A gorgeous nose and awesome texture. Lovely acidity. Red cherries and smoke. A bit darker fruit profile than the otherworldly '62 tasted alongside.

Flight 6 (3 notes)

This flight was much more evolved than the 1962-1971 flight preceding it. Lots of soy sauce, licorice and stewed fruit. Phenomenal complexity.

Red
1949 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
97 points
The next stage of evolution compared to the spellbinding 1962 and 1971. This has mind blowing complexity. Hoisin sauce with a melange of exotic Asian spices and stewed fruits. Gorgeous!
Red
1953 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
93 points
Compared to the '59 and '49 tasted alongside, this wine felt like it had a little bit of heat. A sweeter bigger fruit profile.
Red
1959 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
95 points
Gorgeous complexity. Soy sauce with some licorice and stewed fruit. Wine is still very alive despite its tertiary development stage.

Flight 7 (3 notes)

Red
1950 Château Cheval Blanc France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
93 points
Classic right bank profile with dark fruit but not heavy at all. A more evolved nose compared to the '52 and '53 tasted alongside. Still firmly tannic.
Red
1952 Château Cheval Blanc France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
92 points
Classic right bank profile with dark fruit but not heavy at all. The '52 did not have much of a nose compared to the '50 and /53 tasted alongside. Still lots of tannins and fruit left. Not quite as balanced.
Red
1953 Château Cheval Blanc France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
96 points
An amazing nose. Very polished mouthfeel. The wine feels light on its feet but has the classic merlot flavor profile. Very nuanced and complex. Delicious

Flight 8 (3 notes)

A spectacular flight! Three amazing wines, each with a different signature: The '45 is defined by its fruit, the '47 by its delineation, and the '49 by its nose. Wow!

Red
1945 Château Cheval Blanc France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
99 points
The fruit is amazingly young and fresh for a wine this age, just incredible. Sweet ripe raspberries with a long, long complex finish. This is so delicious and just impossible to put down.
Red
1947 Château Cheval Blanc France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
100 points
This is incredibly precise and delineated. The fruit is amazingly alive and fresh. Great acidity with a flinty smokey nose. Phenomenal complexity. Stunning!
Red
1949 Château Cheval Blanc France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
98 points
A phenomenal bottle. Amazing nose of smokiness and flint. Lots of fresh fruit and complexity. A slightly lighter body than the '45 and '47 tasted alongside.

Flight 9 (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
1955 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
95 points
Amber color. Classic Yquem. So well balanced. Sweet but never heavy.
