Flight 1 (7 notes)

White
2016 Domaine Jean-Marc / Thomas Bouley Bourgogne-Aligoté France, Burgundy, Bourgogne-Aligoté
Medium yellow. Citrus aromas. Medium weight. Nice feel and a good amount of soil, but little flavor through the mid-palate.
Red
2016 Domaine Jean-Marc / Thomas Bouley Volnay Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay
Medium ruby. Black fruit, brambly nose. Light weight but good intensity, pure, excellent acidity and soil with a touch of licorice. Some remaining tannin suggest waiting a couple of years. The price is absurd for a village Volnay, but this is elegant and quite fine at this level.
Red
2016 Domaine Jean-Marc / Thomas Bouley Volnay Clos de la Cave France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay
Clear light ruby. Fruit is more mixed than in the VV, but this still has some of that Savigny briary character on the nose. Wonderful sand/clay base and rounder feel than the prior wine, some subtle sweetness, ripe tannins. Lovely and very approachable, not to mention enjoyable, now. No glitz or wood make up here.

Red
2016 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay
Clear light red. Really brambly smells. Light weight, tart red fruit, excellent acidity and soil throughout. This really gets the salivary juices flowing! Long, grainy tannic finish. Needs time but classic and really excellent at this level (priced like most Premier Crus, though).

Red
2016 Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Clear ruby. Penetrating perfume, flowers, and some oak. Light but glossy wood feel. Nice mix of soil and dull red fruit, good acidity, excellent mouth coverage. Resiny, wood tannin finish. Unfortunately, this level of cooperage does not work for me with Volnays. Too bad.
Red
2016 Domaine des Croix Beaune 1er Cru Pertuisots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Deeper, dense ruby. Nose of crushed herbs. Bigger, broader, harmonious feel without being as encumbered by wood as the Leroux. Bright, spicy cherry fruit, fairly prominent tannins more than earth toward the end. More modern style but a lot to it. Should do well for another decade.
Red
2005 Nicolas Potel Volnay Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay
An extra thrown into the tasting. Red. Some brettanomyces. Lovely, light bodied, red fruit, pomegranate, light soil, mostly resolved tannins. Delicate, fine length. The slight funk on the nose does not taint the palate. This has turned out very well.
