Pooley Cooinda Vale Pinot Noir Vertical

Dench Cafe

Tasted March 25, 2019 by richard.presser with 103 views

Introduction

Tasting conducted in a class format.
Overall these are good pinots, except for the 2015, which IMO is flawed. They are quite ripe and in Burgundian terms fit more in Cote de Beaune than Cote de Nuits. Matthew says the Coal River valley is quite warm.

2017 Pooley Pinot Noir Cooinda Vale Australia, Tasmania, Coal River
90 points
Red fruit, spice, fine. Fairly closed, long. High acid. Will it develop?
Second tasting showed it opening a little and this continued over the eating. Still tight and high acid. Needs time, but I feel it will develop very well.

Rich berry fruit, earthy. Warm, round. Almost drink now.
On second tasting, showing its lowish acid and a little short. Fading? Drink young.

Sl. Vegetative nose, "wild". Not showing primary pinot fruit. Shut down. Ditto on the palate. Slight austere.
Second tasting still the same. Is it bret contamination? Clearly a winemaking fault.

Ripe, rich fruit & spice. Very open. Quite ripe. Nice fruit. Some tea-like characters. Soft. Medium acid. Good but not great length.
Second tasting similar.
Drink now - 2023.

Ripe, clean, spice pinot, violets. Firm tannin, lovely wine. A trace short. Again, tea leaf characters on the palate.
Second tasting very similar. Beautiful aromas.
Drink now - 2025.

Rich, spice, almost Burgundian. Firm, v. Burgundian flavours (Cote de Beaune). Rich but short. Lovely flavours.
Second tasting very similar.
Best wine on the night. Which illustrates the strengths and weaknesses of this vineyard... Will make enjoyable wines in good years, but never great.
