Flight 1 - HHS Hela Havet Stormar (5 notes)

After some guesswork we were told these were Island wines. Then we started to get closer in our guesses. Fun flight, but paled in comparison with the next white flight quality wise.

White
2016 Azores Wine Company António Maçanita Arinto Sur Lies Portugal, Açores, Pico
Tasted double blind.

So much green apple, lemon juice, sharp as a razor, thin fruit in the middle, or maybe its just the acidity. quite ok. I guessed a too young Austrian Grüner Veltliner.
White
2016 Envinate Taganan Spain, Canary Islands
Tasted double blind.

Odd nose, some traces of old oak, spicy, there's acidity but the wine has quite some flesh on the body. Good stuff. I guessed Jurancon or Portugal.
White
2017 4 Kilos Vi de La Tierra Mallorca Sa Cussa Antònia Blanco Spain, Balearic Islands, Vi de La Tierra Mallorca
Tasted double blind.

Has a lot of yeasty tones on the nose, some effervescence, low acidity, quite fat body. Volcanic mineral salt on the nose.
White
2016 Domaine d'E Croce (Yves Leccia) L'Altru Biancu France, Corsica, Île de Beauté
Tasted double blind. Lots of sea salt, volcanic, edgy, cool bordering on unforgiving.
White
2016 Argyros Assyrtiko Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini
Tasted double blind. So much punch from the fruit and acidity, but has body too. A little paint thinner, but its all very nicely put together. Excellent. My wine of the flight. Recommended.

Flight 2 - Valley of the Kings, King of the Valley. (5 notes)

What a fantastic flight!

White
2016 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Blanc La Croix Boissée France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon
Tasted double blind.

Lots of minerals, steel tanked, but ripe yellow fruit. More fatty texture than the others in the flight. A little short finish.
White
2016 Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Blanc Les Moulins France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur
Tasted double blind.

Oaked, complex and just outstanding nose, but also very good acidity. Highly recommended. Tie for wine of the flight.
White
2015 Domaine de la Taille aux Loups Montlouis-sur-Loire Clos de Mosny France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Montlouis-sur-Loire
Tasted double blind.

Very green, green apples, green acidity, lovely energy in the vivacious acidity. Bone dry and no oak. I guessed Sancerre. Recommended.
White
2015 Thibaud Boudignon Savennières Les Fougeraies France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières
Tasted double blind.

Steel tank, green apple and lime, complexity but too early, lots of potential. Tie for wine of the flight. Highly recommended.

White
2015 Domaine des Roches Neuves Saumur Clos Romans France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur
Tasted double blind.

Really great acidity and freshness. Long, narrow, angular, great finish with heaps of minerality. Recommended.

Flight 3 - Interlude. Calibration. (1 note)

Maybe the best wine of the evening? At least top five. Excellent.

Red
2012 Ruggabellus Timaeus Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Tasted double blind.

Almost transparent red color. So very aromatic. raspberry, a little fiery finish betrays warmer climate. So very fine. Mostly Grenache with some small percentages of mataro, cinsault and Syrah. Highly Recommended.

Flight 4 - Jedi and Padawans (4 notes)

To be able to field such a quartet and to learn about how they are all acquainted with the original master starting off the flight. Wow. And the wines were great too.

Red
2006 Robert Michel Cornas Cuvée des Coteaux France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
tasted double blind.

Simple in style, a little discombobulated, but good Syrah fruit, a nice smokiness. Recommended.
Red
2013 Domaine Vincent Paris Cornas La Geynale France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
Tasted double blind.

Great Syrah nose with some pepper and good fruit and complexity. Lovely style. Tie for my wine of the flight. Highly recommended.

Mint chocolate on the nose, young, grippy. Very good. Recommended.
Red
2012 Thierry Allemand Cornas Chaillot France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Sloeberry edge on the Syrah fruit, lots of barnyard, lots of acidity. Excellent and a lot of fun to try my first Thierry Allemand wine. Highly Recommended.

Flight 5 - One district, one vintage, three villages. (3 notes)

I think I was in Chianti. At least I got the country right... Found myself liking the most modern winemaking the best (the Scavino bric del fiasc)

Red
2004 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric dël Fiasc Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Tasted double blind.

Very fine, fruit driven modern style - milk chocolate. Recommended.
Red
2004 Domenico Clerico Barolo Percristina Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Tasted double blind.

Lots of chocolate on the nose, some oak, complexity comes with more air. Very grippy, lots of acidity and some drying tannins.
Red
2004 Massolino Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Tasted double blind.

Boozy, some chocolate liquor on the nose. After some more time in the glass its actually very good, drying finish. Recommended.

Flight 6 - 100+ vintages (2 notes)

We were all pretty much in new world Cabernet Sauvignon. And with the clue that these two producers had between the two, produced more than 100 vintages, that narrowed it down quite a bit.

Red
2010 Forman Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
Tasted double blind.

More elegant and complex at first than the other, like a bordeaux blend, but everyone guessed new world. I guessed Napa cab. Very good. Recommended.
Red
2010 Ridge Monte Bello USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Santa Cruz Mountains
Tasted double blind.

So very fine, cabernet nose, good freshness, but ripe berries. Pure cab. Guessed Monte Bello. So good! Highly Recommended.

Darker, sweet licorice, some tannins, good to some of the cheese. ok.
Red
2013 Domaine de Pallus Chinon Les Pensées de Pallus France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon
lighter but stern and stemmy. ok wine.
