Official Krotida Wine Gang tasting, trying 2003 Ceretto and 2004 La Spinetta at Balcony

Flight 1 - The Piemonte Challenge (4 notes)

Trying the 4 wines at Balcony with food

2004 La Spinetta (Rivetti) Barbaresco Vürsù Vigneto Gallina Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
92 points
The nose is very pure, showing red fruit, leather, earth, ripe cherry, very sweet fruit and pot pouri.
The palate offers loads of tannins, acidity, leather notes, black olive, ripe red fruit, dried red fruit, sweet oak and herbs, nice body and medium finish.
Outstanding quality, could hold more.
2004 La Spinetta (Rivetti) Barolo Vürsù Vigneto Campè Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
92 points
Beautiful attractive color.
The nose is beautiful, attractive, pot pouri, ripe red fruit, very clean, developed profile, red cherry and slight hints of tar.
In the palate, the wine shows a strong botanical profile (almost at the point of bitterness), powerful acidity, black fruit, med to full body, grippy tannins and long finish.
Outstanding quality, still needs time

2003 Azienda Bricco Asili (Ceretto) Barbaresco Bricco Asili Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
92 points
Leave aside its color giving away its age and the rest is as young as it gets.
Needs time to open up.
Very dense black fruit, chocolate, liquorice and scented candles (!!).
The palate is the same, chocolate, black fruit, powerful tannins and acidity, rich moutheel and long finish.
Outstanding quality, keep it or decanted for hours.
2003 Azienda Bricco Rocche (Ceretto) Barolo Brunate Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
91 points
Judging from the color and nose, it looks more matured when tried next to La Spinetta.
Pure red fruit, mineral, rustic, floral notes, pomegranate and red berries.
The palate is nice, clean, showing tannins, medium acidity, feels fully developed, med finish with a very refreshing botanical profile.
Outstanding quality.

Flight 2 - Relaxing after the tasting (3 notes)

Wines tried after the tasting at Materia Prima

2012 Château du Trignon Gigondas France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas
88 points
Delicate, attractive, ripe red sour cherry, cherry, you can feel the alcohol (14.5%), refreshing botanical nuances,
In the palate the wine shows the alcohol once again, pure red fruit, med tannins and finish.
Very good quality but my only concern is the alcohol that is just a bit too obvious. Have it with food
1999 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Valbuena 5° Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
92 points
Very big in the nose, really old school Bordeaux character, old oak, very ripe black fruit, chocolate, liquorice, very inticing and decadent.
In the palate, the wine is quite different, showing medium acidity, tannins and body but also rather surprisingly short finish. Dried fruit, the wine feels lean even though with some time, it grows in the glass. The acidity is great, very smooth mouthfeel and utterly easy to drink.
This being my 2nd time trying this wine (not the vintage), I have to say that I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, its great that its like this at 20yo, but I would like it to show more length. Also, there is a huge difference between the nose and the palate.
After about 30 minutes, I realized I was splitting hairs so...
Outstanding quality and aged gracefully, drink now
2012 Quinta do Crasto Tinta Roriz Douro Portugal, Douro
91 points
Very bright dark color.
The nose is very pure, dense, full ripe black fruit, there is a minty freshness (only comes out in a rather bigger glass) and tar. When tried in a Hermitage glass (which I prefer) the wine shows darker fruit, it feels riper, inky, with heavier floral notes.
In the palate, the wine feels like it comes from a hot place, minreal, bitter herbal notes, dark ripe fruit, med to full body, med acidity and finish. Interestingly enough, you also get blood orange notes, the wine shows smooth palate, easy drinking with the alcohol that you expected (14.5%) but overall quite nice.
Outstanding quality, drink now or hold
