Flight 1 (10 notes)

White
2006 Trimbach Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile France, Alsace
Magnum. Ripe peach, reasonably good acidity. Better than I remember it being the last time although still not in my personal Pantheon of Frédéric Émiles.
White
2011 Gérard Boulay Sancerre La Comtesse France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
Magnum. Nice ripe grapefruit and that lush Boulay feel. A little short in acidity, though.

White - Off-dry
1959 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Medium yellow-how can this be?? Laid back aromas of stone fruit and a bit of petrol. Light to medium body, off dry, perfectly fresh fruit, a bit of herbs, and superb acidity and soil. Alright, the intensity could be better, but c'mon, this is 60 year old Riesling that tastes and looks a good 40 years younger than that.
White - Off-dry
1959 P. Licht-Bergweiler Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
flawed
Deep yellow. Marred by VA and odd off flavors. Too bad.
Red
1959 Château Gruaud Larose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Double magnum. Light tawny. Medium weight. Full of tobacco, soil, and dark red fruit. Excellent acidity and substantial remaining tannin. The feel is neither silky nor too rustic-somewhere in between. Beautiful, very much alive, and in fact, out of this large format, it could still improve for another decade! This is not a bruiser of a '59 Bordeaux.

Red
1959 Château Beausejour (Duffau Lagarrosse) France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
flawed
Maderized and overwhelming volatile acidity.
Red
1959 Bodegas Riojanas Rioja Monte Real Reserva Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
Two different bottles. One was shot, all VA. The other was one of those perfectly delectable old Riojas, faded in color, but full of delicately sweet red fruit, fine acidity, and a base of balsam wood. So, the moral of the story is that there are still really good bottles out there, just not all of them.
Red
1959 Veuve Aubert Aine Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Tawny but not that pale. A whiff of burnt rubber, but once you get past that, mellow perfume that still shows a lot of red fruit. Harmonious feel, at once both light and possessing some sap. Amazing fruit, not a bit cooked or overripe, surprising acidity, and a gentle thread of earth. Not the last word in old Burgundy, but quite remarkable for a 60 year old wine from an obscure domain (negoce?). Who was that masked man named Aubert?!?
White - Sweet/Dessert
1959 Weingut Meyerhof Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Amber. Absolutely slaying nose of spice, apples, and stone fruit. Sweet and lush, but completely balanced and elegant. Superb acidity. This was poured before a bigger, more exotic TBA, which was mind-blowing more for its power, but I preferred this for its focus and lighter feel. What an incredible dessert wine!
White - Sweet/Dessert
1959 Bischöfliches Priesterseminar Trier Dhroner Hofberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Dark as crank case oil. Wild, exotic aroma redolent of apricot and fig with an additional whiff of high toned perfume which makes it even more interesting. Big, unctuous, immensely concentrated wine-a true essence. Probably the largest scale, sweetest German dessert wine I've ever had, yet it has enough acidity to keep it from being cloying. A monument to the power and staying power of this iconic vintage, but not for the faint of heart or those who prize delicacy in their TBA's.
