Reruns - The Wine Event

Tasted April 7, 2019 by galewskj with 287 views

Introduction

The theme was to bring a wine you've had before and like. Although we didn't vote, wine of the night was clearly the 1990 Pichon Baron. And I'm bummed that my 1990 Pichon Lalande was corked, as it probably would have given the Pichon Baron some competition.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

White - Sparkling
2009 Philippe Fourrier Champagne Brut Millésimé France, Champagne
Day 1, this was a combination of bitterness and sweetness. It only got to day 2 because no one (of 6 people) wanted to drink it. Day 2, this was significantly better. It had calmed down, had some robust toast, and it seemed like the sweetness and bitterness melded to a more balanced profile. I'm not scoring today, and I hope the next bottle shows better.
White - Sparkling
2006 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
94 points
Lovely champagne, on the feminine side. Great balance and so lively. The lemon marries with toast, the palate is effervescent.

White
2013 Kistler Chardonnay Kistler Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley
94 points
Unlike a bottle 2 years ago, this was not overtly oaky. In fact, it's one of the most harmonious domestic Chardonnay's I've had. There was butter, gentle spice, minerality, lime, peach and floral.

Flight 2 (5 notes)

Red
2012 Occidental Pinot Noir Cuvée Catherine Occidental Station USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
93 points
Wow, I'm scoring a wine higher than ROCKNROLLER. This has polished flashy red fruit, and yet I didn't find it over the top at all. Like the Kistler chardonnay that proceeded it, it is shockingly balanced for Kistler. Harmonious, rich and ripe.
Red
1990 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
flawed
Corked :(
Red
1990 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
95 points
As a pop and pour (or slow o'd for a couple hours) this was quite youthful. I appreciated the significant fruit alongside typical Bordeaux secondary flavors. Cassis and red fruit, tobacco, minerality and graphite.
Red
1995 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
94 points
Decanted 1 hour. There was significant minerality to this wine. Also, graphite, earth, leather and tobacco. I believe there is upside here.
Red
1997 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Backus Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
93 points
Not decanted, this was big, and the tannins are resolved. Blueberry and blackberry along with earth and maybe some leather. This was not overly complex, but it was incredibly satisfying.

Flight 3 (2 notes)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2005 Château Climens France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac
93 points
Consistent with my last 2 notes of this wine. The elegance on this wine is evident. There is toffee, creme brulee, orange rind and apricot. I'm glad to have some of this in the cellar, and wish I had more Climens in general.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2003 Château Rieussec France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
92 points
A great Sauternes, and it was fun to drink this alongside the 2005 Climens. The Climens is clearly classier and more elegant, while the Rieussec is a bit sharper, spicier and burly. This wine definitely shows the sweetness of the 2003 vintage. I have no complaints drinking this, but wish for a little more balancing acidity.
