Montepulciano Tour

Tasted April 10, 2019 - April 11, 2019 by Lyubomir Lefterov with 159 views

Introduction

A day out in Montalcino area, trying to visit some of the wineries always wanted to.

Flight 1 - Salcheto Winery (4 notes)

Red
2016 Salcheto Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
90 points
Taste at the winery, this shows nice fruit definition with freshness and very good overall balance with elegance . I could say this could easily act as a benchmark for NdM.

2013 Salcheto Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
91 points
Tasted at the winery, this is with more weight and muscle than normal nobile, with solid tannins and structure, while retaining the spirit of the place. A bit in your face at the moment, would be better in 2-3 yeras time at least. Prugnolo Gentile 95%, Colorino 5%.

2013 Salcheto Salco Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
91 points
Tasted at the winery, this wine shifts in different direction compared to Nobiles, more concentrated and weighted with dark fruits and more evident wood treatment. Not necessarily in the direction I like but can not deny the quality. From old vines and from a single plot, 100% Prugnolo Gentile, this is solid and focused and will need more time to settle.

2008 Salcheto Salco Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
92 points
Tasted at the winery, from Coravin, after the '13 vintage. The nose is developed and quite amazing with that forest floor aromas and dark fruit liqueur and impeccable balance. Structure is very similar to '13 as the tannins appeared the same way as the younger vintage, all in all solid wine ,delicious and while I did not go mad about it, I respect it.

Flight 2 - The Poliziano Winery visit (5 notes)

Red
2017 Poliziano Rosso di Montepulciano Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Rosso di Montepulciano
86 points
With a lot of baby fat and some heat as well, this blend of 80% Sangiovese – 20% Merlot is not singing to me at present. I might even say I'm a bit disappointed.

2016 Poliziano Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
91 points
This is classy and way more typical for Montepulciano, than their rosso. Fresh , rounded silky and pleasing - start to finish.
Red
2016 Poliziano Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Vigna Asinone Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
92 points
I have a soft spot for Asinone, I must confess. This keeps the focus and character of the nobile, while gains more weight, precision and depth and the aging in French oak tonneaux is so balanced that only adds finesse to the overall experience. Excellent job here.
Red
2016 Lohsa Maremma Toscana Mandrone di Lohsa Italy, Tuscany, Maremma, Maremma Toscana
92 points
From Poliziano Maremma vineyards this Cabernet sauvignon based blend (80%) comes in elegant very silky fashion, fragrant and ethereal with appeal that sings to me. The rest is filled with other French varietals - Petit Verdot, Carignan and Alicante bouchet to make this smooth and lovely blend.
Red
2016 Poliziano Le Stanze Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
91 points
This one tasted after their Lohsa CS, comes in a fashion - muscular and what one can expect at this price level. Only new French oak, 90% cabernet, 10% merlot, in your face full bodied and intense.
It is always hard to taste these wines after the elegant versions of their sangiovese as it appears way too aggressive, while with some age in the bottle and on its own it will shine differently.

Flight 3 - Lunch @ Dolce Vita wine bar (3 notes)

Quick lunch at this nice wine bar/ shop.
Caprese salad, Funghi & white truffle crostini, Carpaccio.

There is a great value if you order a bottle from their wine list.
Plenty of choices by glass (a bit pricey though)

Red
2015 Le Bertille Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
91 points
By the glass at Dolce Vita. Beautifully rounded, with bright red fruit, while soft and approachable, it is with tension and depth.
Red
2015 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Fontalloro Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
93 points
By the glass at Dolce Vita. This is fascinating the moment you put your nose in the glass. Great focus and purity while multilayered and delicious.

White - Sparkling
N.V. Monte Rossa Franciacorta Sansevé Satèn Italy, Lombardia, Franciacorta DOCG
90 points
By the glass at Dolce Vita. Delicate and refreshing, this is a step above everyday Franciacorta, fine mousse and eklegance above all.

Flight 4 - Contucci winery in the heart of the town. (4 notes)

Brilliant old school wines.
My favourite wines at the end.

Red
2016 Contucci Rosso di Montepulciano Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Rosso di Montepulciano
90 points
This is fresh, joyful and pure pleasure for easy everyday drinking. So well done by Contucci from their basic bottling.
80% Prugnolo gentile, 10% Canaiolo nero, 10% Colorino.
Red
2015 Contucci Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
92 points
Vibrant, succulent, fresh with great mouth feel. They have nailed it with this vintage.
80% Prugnolo gentile, 10% Canaiolo nero, 10% Colorino, large oak cask only, pure expression of the place. Aged for 24 mo in large oak casks.
Red
2015 Contucci Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Pietra Rossa Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
93 points
This is coming with more weight and tension than the normal Nobile bottling, but the balance is excellent, the freshness and the yuminess is there for ultimate enjoyment.
80% Prugnolo gentile, 10% Canaiolo nero, 10% Colorino, aging for 30mo in large oak caks, from single vineyard (clay soils).
Red
2014 Contucci Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Mulinvecchio Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
90 points
Good acidity here and less fruit, medium weighted yet delicious and lovely.
From Mulinvecchio alta vineyard, higher and more elegant wines in general, 80% Prugnolo gentile, 10% Canaiolo nero, 10% Colorino - aging 30 mo in large oak barrels.

Flight 5 - La Bottega del Nobile (6 notes)

A wine shop/bar with plenty of wines by the glass ( enomatic machine ).

Red
2015 Tenimenti Angelini Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Tre Rose Simposio Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
90 points
Quite muscular and bold, some spices and coffee, austere tannins, this is more for the long run. At present not revealing much.
Selection from the best vineyards of the winery. It is aged in barriques for 12 months and in 50 Hl barrels for 6 months.
Red
2013 Le Badelle Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Rubeo Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
93 points
Bursting with elegance and grace, so focused, precise and engaging, fragrant and clean, this was one of the best NdM I tasted.
Red
2012 Montemercurio Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Messaggero Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
89 points
More on the muscular side, with firm tannins, good balance, a little bit of burnt fruit at the backend leaves it controversial for me.
Red
2013 Poggio San Polo Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
93 points
Lovely intensity with chiseled freshness and purity of fruit. Consistent appearance start to finish. Excellent showing of well made Brunello.
Vinification in concrete tanks, followed by 24 months in medium toasted 500-litre tonneaux, mixture of new and used (great wood management btw), vines age15-20y old.
Red
2014 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
92 points
Lifted red fruit in the mid palate, fresh and creamy, good overall balance and surprisingly nice for the vintage.
For the first time since 1978, Tenuta Nuova and Cerretalto grapes are coming to this blend.

2014 Fontodi Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
From enomatic machine - a nice pickled action on the nose, soft and silky in the mouth, this has been opened for a while. The staff replaced it immediately, but this wine popped and poured is not showing much-nicely rounded and tannins that needs time for now. More full bodied, this vintage is 100% sangiovese (if memory serves me well previous vintages have had some help from french varieties), from 40y old vines as impressive as everything that comes from Fontodi.
