Introduction

An amazing afternoon with vignerons from throughout France and some of their friends. Notes on the wines I remembered well enough that evening to accurately described what I tasted.

Flight 1 (26 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Larmandier-Bernier Longitude France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
88 points
Brief note from memory, tasted earlier today. Multi vintage blend with 2015 as its base. Apple, almond butter and toasted baguette with chalky mineral notes. Good+ weight and textures.
White - Sparkling
2009 Pol Roger Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
88 points
Brief note from memory, tasted earlier today. Fleshy fruit with rich, creamy textures and good weight and length, and a simple finish.
White
2014 Domaine Yves Cuilleron St. Joseph Saint-Pierre France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
Brief note from memory, tasted earlier today. Peaches with some lemon curd. All Roussanne with a richness I found slightly extreme, giving it a slightly sweeter finish than I'd prefer.
White
2016 Domaine Yves Cuilleron Condrieu La Petite Cote France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
89 points
Brief note from memory, tasted earlier today. Intensely floral with peach and candied orange peel and honeycomb. Good energy throughout, but best to enjoy young while fruit remains this fresh and vibrant.
White
2004 Albert Mann Riesling Schlossberg France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
90 points
Brief note from memory, tasted earlier today. From 3L. Very floral with stone and tropical fruit, yet restrained and well textured. Botrytis hints add another layer of nuance.
White
2001 Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
89 points
Brief note from memory, tasted earlier today. From magnum. Still nicely fresh with apple flavors and aromas that are maturing gracefully with notes of almond butter and lemongrass.
White
2010 J.M. Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champs Canet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
90 points
Brief note from memory, tasted earlier today. From magnum. Nicely floral and slightly opulent. Plum orchard fruit with good weight and length, ending in both a tart and sweet finish.
White
2014 Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Blanc Brézé France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur
Brief note from memory, tasted earlier today. Slight reduction is barely distracting. Apple, ginger and toasted brioche. Good+ weight. Bright acid and mineral driven finish.
Red
1990 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
flawed
From magnum. So sad, slightly corked.
Red
1978 Gentaz-Dervieux Côte-Rôtie Cuvée Réservée Côte Brune France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
96 points
Rich black and red fruit, gracefully mature with slowly cooked mushroom, leather and braised meat. Good+ weight and a very long, persistent finish that kept going and unfolding. What an amazing treat, with this taste so generously shared by the Côte-Rôtie producers, so clearly this bottle had not traveled far in its life.
Red
2011 Castello del Terriccio Lupicaia Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
90 points
Brief note from memory, tasted earlier today. Ripe, fun and very inviting in the style of modern wines. Black plum, cassis with anise, espresso and vanilla. Very easy to enjoy.
Red
2009 Domaine de la Grange des Pères Vin de Pays de l'Hérault France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Vin de Pays de l'Hérault
91 points
Brief note from memory, tasted earlier today. Ripe black fruit aromas with sweet spice, perhaps coming across as too ripe, but then more restrained and powerful on palate with impressive concentration, weight and length. Lots of complex and ripe black fruit here.
Red
1971 Bouchard Père et Fils Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
90 points
Slightly soft cork fell in, but fell in whole, so didn't make a mess. Fully mature red cherry with good density and ripeness with plenty of mushroom and earth plus sweet spice. Good weight, very good length.
White
2011 Domaine Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Boudriotte France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
91 points
Brief note from memory, tasted earlier today. From 6L directly from the domaine. Yellow pear, mint tea, and lemon peel with a long, minerally finish.
White
2015 Sylvain Morey Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Le Charmois Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru
Brief note from memory, tasted earlier today. Vintage came through very clearly with plenty of very ripe orchard fruit with good weight. Not so subtle.
Red
2014 Marchand & Tawse / Pascal Marchand Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
91 points
Brief note from memory, tasted earlier today. Bright black fruit with a spice driven start and a precise, long minerally finish. Very good already.
Red
2015 Philippe Pacalet Cornas France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
Brief note from memory, tasted earlier today. Nothing shy here, this hits you over the head with rich, jammy fruit, then some more rich, jammy fruit.
Red
2011 Michel & Stéphane Ogier Côte-Rôtie Cuvée la Belle Hélène France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
So much great stuff here, but for today very reductive. I would be exciting to taste this wine tomorrow!
Red
2000 Domaine de la Mordorée Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de la Reine des Bois France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Brief note from memory, tasted earlier today. From magnum. Dark fruit, still brooding.
Red
2011 David Duband Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Brief note from memory, tasted earlier today. Nicely floral with red cherry throughout. Slightly lighter than I'd prefer and with some faint green notes of the vintage.
White
2011 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Brief note from memory, tasted earlier today. From 3L directly from the domaine. Odd, I've had this wine before and it had thrilled me. Plenty of orchard fruit with sweet styled spice. Today's jero started out lush, then finished with a bitter twist. Perhaps I was getting tired.
Red
2008 Domaine Tollot-Beaut Corton-Bressandes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Brief note from memory, tasted earlier today. Lots of black and red fruit, but this also came across as slightly dirty.
White
2014 Domaine Vacheron Sancerre Les Romains France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
89 points
Brief note from memory, tasted earlier today. From 3L. Lots of grapefruit and grass with an interesting combination of ripe and tart elements. I preferred the 2015.
White
2015 Domaine Vacheron Sancerre Les Romains France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
Brief note from memory, tasted earlier today. From 3L. Riper than 2015 with more density. Lemon and apple here with very good length and balance.
Red
2011 Michel & Stéphane Ogier Côte-Rôtie France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
92 points
Brief note from memory, tasted earlier today. From 6L at the domaine. Black and blue fruit with anise and black pepper. Good weight, then sneaky good+ length and a well balanced, persistent finish. I enjoyed this more today vs last time tasted 4 years ago.

White
2009 Domaine Ramonet Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
Brief note from memory, tasted earlier today. From 6L brought by the Ramonets. Lots of ripe apple with sweet spice and mint, and faint tropical hints. So much power this that everything remains wonderfully fresh and balanced, despite the clear ripeness. Very good length.
