2008 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut La Grande Dame France, Champagne

Wasn't a huge fan of this - there's ripe fruit and nice acidity, but the dosage really sticks out here and there's more apparent sweetness on the palate that I like that isn't integrated or balanced bby the acidity. It's a pleasant Champagne, but underwhelming at the price.

2008 Diebolt-Vallois Champagne Grand Cru Fleur de Passion Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

This was impressive. Piercing intensity to the ripe fruited flavours here, and lots of bready and doughy accents and chalky minerality around the fruit. Fantastic acidity beneath gives it great cut and balance, and the whole package is a really compelling Champagne that kept drawing me back to the glass. I need to look for some of this.

Rather out of place at this event - felt awkwardly placed between the Champagnes and the Cabernets, and also not an impressive showing, coming across rather soft on the middle with reductive and metallic aromas distracting from the fruit. The person who brought it says it’s a unicorn, but from this showing it seems more like a donkey with a plastic horn taped to its head.

Pleasant nose, if a touch on the oaky/reductive side, but coming across fairly soft and simple on the midpalate without much depth.

I've had some very good bottles of this wine, but this wasn't among them. The nose doesn't have the brightness or savoury depth that I've encountered in other old Raffaults, and the palate seems a touch thin and rather coarse - the fruit fades rather quickly, leaving behind some grainy tannin on a finish that feels somewhat rough.

A+ for the fragrance, and a solid B+ for the palate. The aromatics are absolutely spectacular here - bright red and dark berried fruit, lower toned earthiness, spice, bright florality, and green forestal/herbal notes all coming together into an amazing scent. It feels a touch coiled and tannic on the palate still; there's impressive density and intensity to the fruit though the tannins clamp down on the finish and it finishes with some austerity. I wonder if this still needs more cellar time, but the aromatics already make this a wow experience.

2004 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny Le Bourg France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny

Liked this, didn't love it, and the whole package is rather underwhelming for something that comes with the hype and price tag now associated with Le Bourg. There's lots of black fruit here tinged by cassis, polished oaky notes in the background, and lots of high toned green/pyrazine notes on the nose that distract a little from the fruit. It's an impressive wine with good intensity and structure, but the sharp tannin and acidity stick out a bit on the back end, and while the overall package is quite enjoyable, it doesn't live up to the billing.

Underwhelming. Plenty of bright red and dark fruit here with tobacco and lightly leathery accents, but it also feels a bit muted and clipped. No noticeable flaws, but certainly missing a couple of gears.

Fantastic bottle - easily my wine of the night, though this still gave the impression there's a lot of unfulfilled potential here. Probably could have used a bit more air - this was opened/slow-oxed a couple of hours before dinner, though we felt a decant may have helped more. Really bright, intense black and red berried fruit augmented with exotic spicy, floral, and tobacco/herbal notes and conveyed with a sense of finesse and grace, despite quite a bit of tannin beneath. Impressive length and overall balance and a great showing, though I would love to see what happens here with more cellar time.

A touch faded and stewed when I first poured this, but it brightened up over a couple of hours with air and was very pleasant when poured, even if not quite at the exalted heights I imagine a perfect bottle might be. There's impressive depth and complexity here, though this bottle seems to be on the downslope with the fruit a bit tired, and the tertiary flavours taking centre stage. Still, there's a lot going on here with mature cedar, leather, spice, and gentle red fruit beneath, but it doesn't live up to its reputation.

Some disagreement here - others liked it more than I did, but I found this rather faded and past its prime.
White - Sweet/Dessert

flawed
Lightly corked. Still plenty of fruit and honey apparent, but the light wet cardboard notes linger and ruin it.

Liked this a lot. There's a faint high toned, almost VA-like note on the nose at first but that blows off quickly with air to show lots of intensely ripe pineapple, apricot, and other tropical fruit flavours drizzled with honey and orange marmalade with some light botrytis spice accents. The botrytis here is not as apparent as I've found in other Yquems, and the richness/clarity of the fruit stands out more - it's a very pretty wine, though still feels very young with a lot of time ahead.
