Visiting Trump's winery

at the winery

Tasted April 19, 2019 by Omar Khayyam with 109 views

Introduction

Of course I had to visit the president's winery when I toured Virginia's wineries. The visit took place in early August 2018. The estate is beautifully set and located not too far from other presidential estates in the heartland of Virginia.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

White - Sparkling
2012 Trump Winery Blanc de Blancs USA, Virginia, Central Virginia, Monticello
86 points
This was a surprising discovery: fine with both sweet fruit (red and green apples), good acidity and balance. Guessing that it has been raised on oak barrels. Method Champenoise.

White
2016 Trump Winery Viognier USA, Virginia, Central Virginia, Monticello
76 points
Tropical fruit bomb and vanilla pudding; low acidity and soft palate.
Rosé
2017 Trump Winery Rosé USA, Virginia, Central Virginia, Monticello
79 points
Not so much on the nose, soft palate, but better acidity than the Viognier.
Red
2016 Trump Winery Cabernet Sauvignon USA, Virginia, Central Virginia, Monticello
ok nose of blackberries, plums. thin mid palate, soft, some tannins from the oak, but there's no backbone to this. Avoid.

White - Fortified
N.V. Trump Winery Cru USA, Virginia, Central Virginia, Monticello
50 points
Horrible. Sting from the alcohol and cloying sweetness like from concentrated fruit syrup. Avoid at all costs.
Red
2016 Trump Winery Meritage USA, Virginia, Central Virginia, Monticello
78 points
Fine nose with some graphite and cassis and vanilla. But soft and with very low acidity, lacks concentration.

Closing

The sparkler was really well made. I assume it's a continuation of the Kluge sparkler that was made before at the former owner's winery. The other wines were really not interesting. Soft, jammy, lacking in structure and acidity and balance.
