Introduction

This tutored tasting was organised by The Wine Society and offered great insight into this varietal.

Flight 1 - Wines under £15 (3 notes)

Red
2016 Kumeu River Pinot Noir Village New Zealand, North Island, Auckland, Kumeu
Easy drinking. Expressive, cool bright strawberries. Jammy but not in an over-ripe or over-heated way. A bit of cold stone and something herby about this wine. Best finish in the under £15 category.
Red
2017 Peltier Ranch Pinot Noir Reserve USA, California, Central Valley, Lodi
Definitely could tell that this is from a warmer climate from the nose. More bodied. However I'd identified something funky on the nose and was not a fan of this wine.
Red
2015 Undurraga Pinot Noir T.H. [Terroir Hunter] Las Gaviotas Chile, San Antonio Valley
Quite dark in colour for a PN. Good ripe fruit. Black cherries, etc. Lovely finish. Lovely wine. I think Chilean PN always offer excellent value.

Flight 2 - Wines between £15 and £25 (3 notes)

Red
2017 Kooyong Pinot Noir Massale Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Ripe strawberries on the nose. Veering on the side of more full bodied. Best nose between £15 and £25 flight.
Red
2017 Radford Dale Pinot Noir Freedom South Africa, Cape South Coast, Elgin
Very sweet red fruit delightful to nose but not very complex. Good finish with pleasantly round tannins.
Red
2017 Jean Stodden Spätburgunder Germany, Ahr
Something different with the typical red fruits but also an element of milky chocolate which made this wine stand out.

Flight 3 - Wines between £25 to £40 (4 notes)

Red
2016 Greywacke Pinot Noir New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
First thing that stood out was how dark this wine was for a Pinot Noir. On the nose, black and red fruits with quite a lot of minerality and freshness. Not balanced enough on the nose. But when it came to the palate, this wine totally delivered. It had a very balanced palate and good persistent finish. Other than the nose, this wine can stand with the greats of Burgundy IMO. Serious wine.
Red
2016 Au Bon Climat Pinot Noir Santa Barbara County USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County
Sweet strawberries with some barnyard (not something I was expecting from this region). Oak was quite prominent but not really a bad thing.

Red
2012 Domaine de Bellene Nuits St. Georges Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges
Restrained. Balance of good red fruit and earth. Some barnyard. Quiet tannic. Needs more time to integrate the tannins but can see that it will be a very enjoyable drink in the future.
Red
2016 Mac Forbes Pinot Noir Yarra Junction Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
This one wow-ed me. Very pure fruit with floral elements. Perfect level of ripeness for me. Excellent bright finish! I would buy at this price point.

Flight 4 - Premium Red Burgundies +£50 (2 notes)

Red
2010 Domaine Maume Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
On the nose quite muted, red fruits and 'tiger balm patch'. Good fruit and good length.
Red
2013 Domaine Maume-Marchand-Tawse Mazoyères-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru
Good nose, with complex layers of red fruits with a lot of presence. Most powerful wine of the night of the tasting but at the same time very elegant. Very good length.
