90 years of Ducru Beaucaillou

Introduction

Bruno Borie has done so much for us all - carrying on at Ducru-Beaucaillou without dropping the flag for a second. Under his aegis, I think some of the great expressions of the terroir have been achieved. And he does this with great humility, respect, tenacity, and humor. So pleased to share this vertical with Bruno.

1929 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
95 points
This starts off a little volatile but with 20-30 minutes sheds those notes and the majesty of fully resolved, 90 year old claret is clear. Raspberry, red currant, cedar, ginger, sous-bois - an ephemeral, powdery melange of so many lovely, delicate things. It's simply from another world, another time. And all the more special to open this for Bruno Borie. From 750, perfect cork, upper shoulder.

Wow - granted this is from a single owner magnum with a base neck fill, but what an astonishingly vibrant, winning wine. Huge, pungent nose of redcurrant, iron, cedar, earth, and mineral. Rich, dense if not exactly voluptuous but so full of spirit and verve. Frankly, among the most thrilling stuff I have had in a long time. This is fabulous and complements the powdery, elegant 1929 in the next glass magnificently.

Fabulous, mature St. Julien which has a great deal to say about Ducru-Beaucaillou and 1955 in particular. Currant, cedar, ginger, biscuit, first flush Darjeeling - broad, savory-sweet nose, perfectly mellow on the nose and palate. Truly a beauty. From 750mL, Nicolas, very top shoulder, decanted 20 minutes.

What a foil to the elegant 55 - not that the 59 is really that much of a bruiser per se, but its impact and force can't be denied. Assertive, muscular blackcurrant, ceps, loam, and cedar on the nose. Rich palate. Very much an example of the vintage. 750 with an upper shoulder fill, decanted 20 minutes.

How different to the 59 and 55 alongside; an elegant, slightly volatile, raspberry, lipstick, floral nose - so delicate in its way. The 1962 is always a feminine, beautiful Ducru-Beaucaillou and this is no exception - particularly from magnum. No doubt at its apogee now, this should be consumed with joy. From neck fill magnum.

Remarkably consistent profile to another magnum a few years ago, but this time much more full of life. Of course, the provenance here is excellent. This base neck magnum decanted 2 hours shows a very sandalwood-heavy, cedary, gingery nose still with plenty of fine-boned blackcurrant. Lots of presence and impact. Excellent. I wouldn't hold onto these for ages, but it's a great time now.

This starts off very aggressive; smoky, bold, pencil-filled and with two hours mellows and develops the complexity one would like to see from the 82 DB. Of course this can be a hugely variable wine, so it is what it is - but this isn't a bad example eventually developing a currant-heavy, cedary, smoky, slightly caramel edge.

2000 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

The 2000 Ducru Beaucaillou really needs a couple hours of air to show its best, so that's what I gave this. Very typical to the 00 DB, this shows an intense mineral, truffle, oaky nose around a blackberry base. Slightly diffuse on the palate. The 2000 vintage isn't my favorite as they are evolving faster than might have originally been thought and seem to become lighter rather than more profound with age, but one does get some strange looks throwing a vertical tasting without it - so, voila.

This is still a very young wine but its pleasures aren't exactly hidden - this is so full of life; ripe, intensely curranty, sumptuously fruited and textured. For such a luscious wine, there's also the requisite structure for aging and that combination - a rare thing - bodes very well for the future, indeed.

A slightly difficult wine to assess at the moment in terms of its aromatic details, but what's clear is the important bits - abundant, perfectly ripe black fruit, good acid, firm tannins, and beautiful length. So what's not to like? Not a Ducru-Beaucaillou of finesse perhaps, but an impressive one that honestly conveys its vintage. And what more can you ask for than transparency?

2003 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

I generally detest the 2003 vintage. The wines are hot, flabby, and though somewhat specious when young most have begun to fall apart very badly indeed. But the Ducru Beaucaillou is a pleasant surprise; yes, the fruit is ripe and slightly roasted respecting its vintage. But there is also enough freshness and acidity to keep that somewhat roasted currant and oak profile from becoming moribund. And that is not only one hell of a success for 2003 - it's one hell of a success for your first vintage. So good for you, Bruno - strong start.

A lovely conclusion to an evening of Ducru Beaucaillou. Fresh, bright, marmalade, almond, acacia nose. Delightful Yquem with many happy years in hand.
