Tasted May 2, 2019 - May 9, 2019 by BitDrErik with 574 views

Introduction

Eðalklúbburinn attended the Priorat wine fair 2019 which took place on May 3d to 6th. In addition we visited some wineries in situ. This time around there were eight of us attending: Andri, Björgvin, Bolli, Indriði, Jón Loftur, Jón Lárus, Lúðvík and Magnús.

Flight 1 - Tasting at VinoVí (2019-05-02) (9 notes)

Red
2016 Dominio de Tares Bierzo Cepas Viejas Spain, Castilla y León, Bierzo
87 points
Youngish colour. Purple. On the nose marzipan, vanilla, violets and mints. Some rough edges on the tongue which will presumably even out. Lots of potential.
Red
2015 Bodegas Baigorri Rioja Crianza Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja
89 points
Rather light in colour. On the nose: Minerals, sweet tobacco, black berries, liquorice, cow shed and mint. We found red fruits, nicely integrated oak and mint on the tongue. Very good effort for only 12€.
Red
2016 Bodegas Atalaya Alaya Tierra Spain, Castilla-La Mancha, Almansa
90 points
Dark purple colour. Dense black jam on the nose. Also some minerals, iron. Then blood and also some flowery notes, violets. Very dark notes when tasted. Some burnt notes to start with, soot. But also some citrusy notes, oranges mostly. Strange concoction. Tannins were in abundance. There is also some sweetness and spices (black pepper) to be felt. Massive wine. I liked it a lot.
Red
2017 Dominio del Aguila Pícaro del Aguila Viñas Viejas Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
87 points
Crimson red colour. Bananas, strawberries, herbs (mint) and baking spices (cardamoms) on the nose. When tasted there were spices, also some green tones to be found. Nice acid. Apart from some unripe tones it is a very agreeable wine.

Red
2014 Vinyes i Cellers Clua Terra Alta Millenium Crianza Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Terra Alta
86 points
Crimson coloured. Solvents, aceton on the nose. Those were followed by some burnt notes, rubber and then over to burnt wood, pine maybe? Lots of minerals on the nose too. On the tongue there were lots of dark elements. Chocolate, tobacco. Some freshness was evident too in the form of eucalyptus and mint. Nice wine if you like your wines heavy and dark but the price tag of around 22€ is a bit hefty. When I was writing the TN I realized that almost three years ago I had tasted the 2013 vintage of the same wines. The tasting note then was similar to this one.
Red
2016 Solà d'Ares Priorat Tuturi Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
89 points
A bit darker than average. Lots of solvents, petrol, glue and brown banana on the nose. Dark fruits like plum were there too. Someone mentioned vintage port. In the mouth there were similar burnt notes and smoke. Some sweetness was evident and we also registered some vanilla. For me an agreeable wine but not one for everyones taste. Costs 19€ which I think is a reasonable price.
Red
2016 Cellers de Scala Dei Priorat Heretge Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
93 points
Very dark colour. Lots of solvents on the nose. Also dark fruits. Smell of old things like attic or similar (in a good way). Someone mentioned rotten tomatoes (but that's hardly a good thing is it?). I, however, could not relate to that description. Spices like cinnamon were felt in the background. Lots of fruits on the tongue. In fact a kaleidoscope of fruits. Beautiful balance. Considering how dark it felt on the nose the wine was surprisingly fresh. Extremely good wine, easily the wine of the evening. The only downside is a price tag of 50€. The wine is worth every euro cent, however.
Red
2007 Sangenís i Vaqué Priorat Coranya Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
92 points
Dark in colour with an orange rim. Solvents and fried eggs on the nose. With time in the glass cacao and lard were added. In the mouth: Plum chutney, dark fruits mostly but cacao and chocolate emerged later on. Good acid. Good balance. Very good wine and for 27€ a really good buy.

White
2018 Willi Haag Riesling trocken Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
At the end of the tasting our host suggested that we should try this as a last bottle. No detailed notes, hence no score. This was a nice riesling. Not too sweet. Classical riesling notes both on the nose and the tongue.

Flight 2 - Tasting in the wine shop in Porrera (off venue 2019-05-03) (5 notes)

We stumbled into a small wine shop in Porrera. There was a wine tasting going on so we had to participate.

Red
2016 Trosset de Porrera Priorat Olim Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Medium dark colour. Limited production of around 1700 bottles. Fresh both on tongue and nose. Minerals. Easy drinking quaffer. Nothing remarkable, though.
Red
2017 Ca l'Apotecari de Porrera Priorat Alcaest Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Medium dark colour. A blend of carynena and cabernet sauvignon. Agreeable wine. For me the price point (around 20€) was a bit higher than the wine delivered. The most memorable thing about the wine was that we met the winemaker at the tasting. It is always interesting to hear about the wine directly from the producer.
Red
2016 Els vil.lusionistes Priorat Unànim Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Darker than average in colour. Not much to say about this wine. For me the least exciting wine in this tasting. Can't even recall the price of it. Below average.
Red
2015 Celler Cal Pla Priorat La Carenyeta Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Dark in colour. Very nice wine, as almost always from this winery. Not the best wine in the tasting but QPR was good.
Red
2013 Ca l'Apotecari de Porrera Priorat Triaca Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Dark in colour. Around 4.000 bottles produced. Very good wine. Balanced and with nice fruit and acidity. Easily the best wine of this mini tasting. Costs 35€, though.

Flight 3 - Organic Soirée, Porrera (2019-05-03) (30 notes)

This tasting was held in the basement of the house were we were staying. An assortment of biodynamic, organic and vegan wines.

Rosé - Sparkling
2018 Domaine Jean-Louis Tribouley La part de l'été France, Vin de France
The first stall (La Natural) was a little perplexing to me. Four wines were featured in it and I could not see the connection between them. I started with this rosé. Nice everyday rosé. Lightly sparkling. An easy quaffer.
Red
2018 Domaine du Possible Côtes du Roussillon le fruit du hasard France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Côtes du Roussillon
The next wine was Le fruit du hasard. Good red from Roussillon. There was also another red, dfm from La Natural there, that I skipped.
White
2018 Domaine Gilles Troullier Vin de Pays des Côtes Catalanes De-Ci France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Vin de Pays des Côtes Catalanes
The last wine in this stall, I tasted. Very fresh and agreeable white. Not much depth, though.
Red
2017 Los Comuns Priorat Estrem Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
The next stall was Los Comuns. I couldn't see that any vintage was declared on the labels of the three wines I tasted. One of my colleagues was more attentive than I and noted the vintage. This one was dark and very fruity. A bit watery to me.
Red
2016 Los Comuns Priorat Torts Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Higher in alcohol and with more body than the Estrem.
Red
2016 Los Comuns Priorat Bateda Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Similar to the Torts. 15% alcohol good body. These wines are harmless but did not appeal to me for some reason.
Red
2017 Gratavinum Priorat Silvestris Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Gratavinum was next in line. Started with this one, Silvestris. I normally like wines from Gratavinum a lot and this was no exception. Lighter than the 2 pi R. Freshness and red fruits.
Red
2016 Gratavinum Priorat 2 Pi R Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Denser and more body than the Silvestris. Good balance. Will get better.
Red
2012 Gratavinum Priorat GV5 Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Very good wine. Very dark notes. At the same time fresh and balanced. One of the best wines if not the best wine of this event.

Red
2015 Celler Burgos-Porta Priorat Petit Mas Sinen Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Two wines from Celler Burgos-Porta. This one is a veritable coctail of five grape varieties. It was a solid effort from this producer.
Red
2015 Celler Burgos-Porta Priorat Mas Sinén Negre Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Denser and darker than the previous petit version. This was more to my taste. A well made wine. Lots of freshness.
Rosé
2018 Comalats Costers del Segre Gavernera Rosat Spain, Catalunya, Costers del Segre
Cellers Comalats were next up with a selection of four wines. I started with the Gavernera. A very nice rosé. Much better than one tried earlier in the tasting.
Red
2018 Comalats Costers del Segre Alosa, Jove Spain, Catalunya, Costers del Segre
100% cabernet sauvignon. An easy drinking wine but unremarkable.
Red
2018 Comalats Costers del Segre Esparver, Jove Spain, Catalunya, Costers del Segre
A blend of cabernet and syrah. There was more to this wine than the Alosa. Not anything to get excited about, though.
Red
2005 Comalats Costers del Segre Cuprum, Reserva Spain, Catalunya, Costers del Segre
The last wine we tasted from this producer was the Cuprum. Much denser and with quite nice body. Very good wine. One of the best in this event.
Rosé
2018 Bàrbara Forés Terra Alta A. En Moviment. Ancestral Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Terra Alta
Then we moved to the stall of Barbara Fores where she was showcasing her En Moviment line of four wines. First in line was a rosé made from the morenillo grape (which I had never heard of before). This wine is made only in just under 500 bottles. The rarity apart the wine was not very appealing to me. Well made but not exciting.
White
2017 Bàrbara Forés Terra Alta 1. En Moviment. Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Terra Alta
This wine was much more exciting to me than the rosé. Made in tiny quantity. Only 378 bottles were produced. Very fresh with precise acidity. Nice job.
White
2017 Bàrbara Forés Terra Alta 2. En Moviment. Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Terra Alta
Generally I'm not a fan of the macabeo grape. It was also the case here. It felt too sweet on the tongue even though it only has 4 g/l of residual sugar. A well made wine but not to my taste. Only 400 bottles or so were made of this wine.
Red
2014 Bàrbara Forés Terra Alta 0. En Moviment. Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Terra Alta
This was the last wine from Barbara Fores tasted. Only 250 bottles were produced. Made from more than 80 year old vines. Utterly delicous. But very hard to come by.
Rosé
2017 Partida Pedrer Priorat Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Some wines from Sara Perez and René Barbier Jr. The quality in the wines was a bit up and down. This one was a nice but average rosé. At least not nearly as good as the Comalats Gavernera tasted earlier.
White
2015 Venus La Universal Montsant Venus de Cartoixà Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Montsant
This wine from Sara Perez and René Barbier Jr. was fabulous. The best white by far in this tasting. A wine worth seeking out.
Red
2016 Mas Martinet Priorat Els Escurcons Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
This red did not disappoint either. I've tasted it before (I think it was the 2014) and this time it was dark, powerful and velvety. Great wine.
Red
2013 Trosset de Porrera Priorat Vi de Vila Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Next we turned to the stall of Trosset de Porrera. There were two wines there. The entry level wine, Olim which we had tasted earlier during the day. Olim is a nice entry level wine. This one was much fuller, denser and more exciting. Quite nice in fact. I think it suffered coming next after the Els Escurҫons.

2018 Vega Aixala Conca de Barberà Emma Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Conca de Barberà
The second last stall was that of Vega Aixala. Four wines in all. This one is grown at an altitude of 900 meters. Only around 1.300 bottles made. Agreeable but to me an unremarkable wine.
Red
2017 Vega Aixala La Bauma Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Conca de Barberà
There was a bit more to this wine than the Emma that preceded it. This one is also grown at high altiude. Fresh and generally good.
Red
2018 Vega Aixala Emma Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Conca de Barberà
Light in colour. Light in alcohol. Light body. Well balanced and nice wine. Only 1060 bottles produces so this is a tiny production.
Red
2011 Vega Aixala Viern Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Conca de Barberà
By far the best wine for me from Vega Aixala in this tasting. Very nice. Lots of fruits. Freshness and good balance.
Red
2017 Solà d'Ares Catalunya Sauri Spain, Catalunya
The last stall in the Organic tasting. Sola d'Ares. This wine is very good for a 12€ wine. Entry level but it has got ripe fruit. Nice acid and good balance.
Red
2015 Solà d'Ares Catalunya Saurí Vinyes Velles Spain, Catalunya
The second wine from Solà d'Ares. The grapes are from ancient vines. And it can be felt. Great freshness, good acidity and balance. Nice fruit. Extremely good wine. Costs maybe 24€ and that's a money well spent.
Red
2013 Solà d'Ares Priorat Bessons Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
The last wine from the Solà d'Ares was this one. For me not surpassing the Saurí Vinyes Velles. By no means bad wine though.

Flight 4 - Tast de Carinyenes, Porrera (2019-05-03) (15 notes)

Red
2015 Celler Castellet Priorat Empit Selecció Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
First wine in the carinyena tasting. This was 100% carinyena. Dark. Some sweetness on the nose. Red fruits. Balanced on the tongue. Dark fruit on the tongue and minerals. Quite nice. I'm not sure about the price point. Empit costs around 16€ but this was selecció so it must be more expensive than that. We also got to taste the 2017 vintage of the same wine. Not yet bottled. Not as balanced as the 2015 but promises good.
Red
2017 Celler de l'Encastell Priorat Roquers de Samsó Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Bottle number 501 of 1.000. From very old vines. Not often that so many bottles are produced of this wine in the same year. Very dark in colour. Dark fruits on the nose. Plums on the palate. Beautiful balance. Very good, indeed.
Red
2016 Celler Vall Llach Priorat Porrera Vi de Vila Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Around 70% carinyena and from very old vines (around 100 years old). Very dark in colour, on the nose and in the mouth. Only three years old and already extremely good. I have tasted the 2013 vintage of this wine and i think this vintage surpasses it. Costs between 45 and 50€.

Red
2011 Cims de Porrera Priorat Classic Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Like many other wines tasted at this event, very dark. Spicier on the nose than many. Dark fruit and then coffee on the tongue. Good wine but not quite in the same league as e.g. Vall Llach. Porrera Costs around 45€.
Red
2016 Celler Francisco Castillo Priorat Selección Andreu Clos Dominic Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Wow! This is a really fabulous wine. So smooth, so elegant. And it is just starting its journey. Great effort! Best wine of the tasting so far.
Red
2018 Familia Nin-Ortiz Priorat Planetes de Nin Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Very young and much lighter than most other wines tasted previously at this event. I have tasted the 2013 vintage of this wine before and the 2018 vintage is probably a tad better. Meeting the legendary Ester Nin, the winemaker of Nin-Ortiz, in person was the higlight of the visit to this stall.
Red
2015 Ferrer Bobet Priorat Seleccio Especial Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
I like Ferrer Bobet Selecció Especial a lot and 2015 is no exception. Beautiful nose. Great freshness and balance on the tongue. Almost as good as the Clos Dominic Selecció Andreu. Maybe a 94 to Clos Dominic's 95.
Red
2017 Fills de la Llicorella Priorat Cor de Pedra Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Not a bad wine at all. In fact really nice but suffered coming right after Ferrer Bobet Selecció Especial.

Red
2016 Marco Abella Priorat Roca Grisa Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Roca Grisa is from a single vineyard, pure carinyena (carignan). Delicious wine with red fruit and spices. Fresh and balanced. I like many of Marco Abellas wines but they are to expensive in my opinion.
Red
2014 Marco Abella Priorat Clos Abella Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
It is always a treat to get to taste Clos Abella. A bit more rustic than the Roca Grisa but very decent wine all the same.
Red
2017 Mas d'en Peri Priorat M'ho Ha Dit un Ocellet Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Surprisingly good coming after the wines from Marco Abella. This was a step backward though. Most probably this wine is much cheaper so the QPR might be in order.
Red
2016 Merum Priorati Priorat Destí Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
This wine caught my attention. I did not know this wine before the tasting. Very good wine. Worth seeking out if the price is right.
Red
2017 Sangenís i Vaqué Priorat Clos Monlleó Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
This has not officially been bottled yet. As could be seen by altered vintage on the bottle by hand. This is a trademark Priorat. Very dark fruit. Lots of minerals. Good balance in spite of young age. Will get better and is already quite good. Costs between 50 and 60€.
1 person found this helpful Comments (2)
Red
2016 Ardévol Priorat Coma d'en Romeu Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
From a magnum. From old vines. Very good. Dark tones on the nose. Dark fruits and spices on the palate. Finely balanced. A wine I didn't know of beforehand. One of the best wines of the event.
Red
2017 Celler Cal Pla Priorat Planots Vi de Vinyes Velles Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Not officially bottled yet (at least the bottle had a temporary label on). Really good as Planots usually is. Not yet as velvety as 2010 is but it is only two years old yet. A great wine in the making.

Flight 5 - Tast amb Dones, Gratallops (2019-05-04) (35 notes)

Only wineries with women as winemakers (or playing other big part in the winery) were represented here.

Red
2016 Sangenís i Vaqué Priorat Lo Bancal del Granatxa Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Relatively light wine. Little or no oak. Simple and refreshing juice.
Red
2015 Sangenís i Vaqué Priorat Vall Por Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Much denser and rounder than the Bancal was the Vall Por. Good wine and it only costs 15€. Very good wine for that price.
Red
2017 Clos Figueras Priorat Font de la Figuera Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Then over to the Clos Figuears stall. This is very young of course. Showing promise in spite of that. I've tasted both 2015 and 2016 of this wine and liked a lot. 2017 is quite on the same level.
Red
2016 Clos Figueras Priorat Clos Figueres Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
This is an excellent wine. Round, complex and velvety. One of the best showing in the whole of the Tast amb Dones event.
Red
2017 Clos Figueras Priorat Serras del priorat Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Should have started with this one at the Figueras stall. Not in the same league as the Font de la Figuera and the Clos Figueres. Coming after Clos Figueres made it look a bit simple and watery. This is not a bad wine at all, though. Around 86-88.
Red
2015 Copa Llena Montsant Poblets Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Montsant
Easy drinking Montsant wine. Not remarkable, though.
Rosé
2017 Copa Llena Montsant Poblets Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Montsant
More to my taste than the red from the same. Decent rosé. Fresh, and crisp.
Red
2017 Marco Abella Priorat Loidana Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Next to the Marco Abella stall. Decided to start with the entry level wine this time. Agreeable wine but a bit dull. Lacking tension.
Red
2016 Marco Abella Priorat Mas Mallola Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
This one was much more to my liking than the Loidana. It has stuffing and is a very likeable wine.
Red
2014 Marco Abella Priorat Clos Abella Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Clos Abella is a very good wine and it showed well at the event. Fresh and round and well balanced. In similar place as the 2013 and 2012.
Red
2016 Marco Abella Priorat Roca Grisa Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
The top wine from Marco Abella presented here. Single vinyard, 100% carinyena and very limited production. This bottle was number 283. Very nice on both nose and tongue. Very fresh. To me one of the three or four top wines at this event.
Red
2017 En Numeros Vermells Priorat Etiqueta Negra Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Over to the stall of Silvia Puig. As usual her wines did not disappoint. Great freshness and lots of fruits. Powerful and balanced. Of course still young but already in a good place.
Red
2017 En Numeros Vermells Priorat Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
For some reason the garnatxa-syrah version (with white label) from Silvia has never appealed much to me. Well made wine but my palate is just not impressed.
Red
2017 En Numeros Vermells Priorat Carinyena Quasi Centtenari Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Wonderful wine. So smooth, fresh and delicious. One of the absolute peaks of the event.
White
2018 Trossos del Priorat Priorat Llum d'Alba Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Moving to the stall of Trossos del Priorat. We started with two whites. This one very agreeable. Fresh and fruity. Nice white.
White
2017 Trossos del Priorat Priorat Abracadabra Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
And then to the Abracadabra which is a very good white. Much more body than the Llum. Round and balanced.
Red
2016 Trossos del Priorat Priorat l'estaca Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Okay quaffer. Lots of fruits. A bit unbalanced.
Red
2014 Trossos del Priorat Priorat Lo Mon Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
In the past I have not been too happy about this one. Didn't do too badly at this event, though. At least a step up from the l'Estaca.
Red
2014 Trossos del Priorat Priorat Pam de Nas Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Dark and complex on both nose and tongue. Good balance. Very good wine. I didn't know this wine beforehand and was pleasantly surprised.
Red
2016 Mas d´en Gil Priorat Bellmunt Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Very good for such an inexpensive wine (less than 14€). Good fruit, good balance.
Red
2014 Mas d'en Gil Priorat Coma Vella Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
If Bellmunt was good, what can then be said about Coma Vella? So succulent. Nice fruit and everything in total harmony. And yet the 2014 is probably not as good as the 2013 is. Must get some of this.
Red
2014 Mas d'en Gil Priorat Clos Fontà Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
From old vines. This is an absolute treat to get to taste. So soft and pure and fresh! Stunning wine!
Red
2015 Casa Gran del Siurana Priorat Cruor Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Then we moved to the stall of Casa Gran del Siurana. Started with an old acquaintance the Cruor. Which for me always blows its bigger brother (or sister for that matter) the Gran Cruor away. The 2015 vintage of this wine is extremely good. Dark fruit, impeccable balance and long aftertaste. In my opinion much better than 2014 of the same.
Red
2014 Casa Gran del Siurana Priorat La Fredat Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Next to a wine from the same winery I didn't know. La Fredat. I would buy the Cruor any time instead of this. Nice wine in itself but it lacks the vibrancy and the precision of the Cruor.
Red
2011 Casa Gran del Siurana Priorat Gran Cruor Selecció Caranyena Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Next to the Gran Cruor. This wine is rated at 86 points on Cellar Tracker, which is of course ridiculous. This is a very good wine in totally another league than a 86 point wine. Slightly better than the Cruor 2015. I have, however, always had difficulties with the price of Gran Cruor. For twice the price of Cruor it delivers so little extra that I never can defend buying the Gran Cruor. I would rate this at 92-94 points.
Red
2013 Casa Gran del Siurana Priorat Gran Cruor Selecció Caranyena Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
First time for me this version of Gran Cruor. Only around 1.100 bottles made. The regular version is a tad better in my opinion. This is none the less a very good wine.
White
2017 Morlanda (Viticultors del Priorat) Priorat Morlanda Blanc Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
After a very good showing at the Casa Gran del Siurana we moved to the Morlanda stall. There we got to taste this white which was fine. Crisp and fresh. A decent white.
Red
2016 Morlanda (Viticultors del Priorat) Priorat Morlanda Vi de Guarda Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Then to the Vi de Guarda which is good and reliable without being spectacular. A very decent wine.
Red
2017 Viticultors del Priorat (Mas de Subira) Priorat Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
This was the only one I tasted from this winery. Nice if not spectacular wine.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Mascaro Cava Pure Reserva Brut Nature Spain, Cava
Next up a cava stall. The first wine was a very decent cava. Standard cava grapes apart from xarel-lo. Fresh and crispy. Very good effort.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Mascaro Cava Extra Brut Gran Reserva Cuvee Antonio Mascaro Spain, Cava
Much more body than in the Pure edition. A small amount of chardonnay instead of xarel-lo. Aged for longer time than the Pure. More bread, yeast and butterscones on the tongue. Very likeable. I liked this so much that I bought a bottle at the event.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Mascaro Cava Nigrum Spain, Cava
Why this is called nigrum eludes me. There is nothing black about it. Standard cava blend and this time xarel-lo is incorporated. Perhaps the weakest of the three cavas from this producer so far. Not very exiting for my taste.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Mascaro Cava Rubor Aurorae Spain, Cava
The last Mascaro I tasted was a rosé one. Quite nice actually. A step up from the Nigrum (the non black one).
Rosé
2018 Vinícola del Priorat Priorat L'Obaga Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
The last stall we visited was that of the cooperative, Vinicola del Priorat. Frankly I was not expecting much but this rosé was quite nice. Exceeded expectations.
Red
2017 Vinícola del Priorat Priorat Ònix Clássic Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
The same could be said about this red as the preceding rosé. This was in fact quite nice. By no means earth shattering but a decent effort. Which could not be said about the last wine we tasted at this stall, Nadiu la Simó. Very generic (isn't that a redundancy?). So generic that I will not bother creating the wine on Cellar Tracker.

Flight 6 - Tast amb Llops, Gratallops (2019-05-04) (34 notes)

This tasting was held in Gratallops. Focusing on winerys in this tiny village.

White
2017 Celler Marc Ripoll Sans Priorat Cal Batllet Escanya-Vella Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
We started this tasting with the winery of Celler Ripoll Sans. A winery that I hadn't heard of before. Escanya-Vella is a grape variety that is used in this wine. Supposedly 100%. Extremely good. Crisp and fresh on the tongue. Minerals and good acidity.
Red
2015 Celler Marc Ripoll Sans Priorat Cal Batllet Llum d'Alena Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Coming after the extremely good Escanya-Vella this garnatxa based red was standing up for it self. Round and balanced and quite nice wine. Not memorable though.
Red
2014 Celler Marc Ripoll Sans Priorat Cal Batllet D'Iatra Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Very dark in colour. I thought that this was slightly better than the Llum d'Alena. Denser and darker notes on the tongue. Very nice wine.
Red
2012 Celler Marc Ripoll Sans Priorat Cal Batllet 5 Partides Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
By far the best wine that we tasted from this producer. Dark and dense. At the same time fresh though. Dark fruit. Very good balance. Great wine.
Red
2017 Mas Martinet Priorat Els Escurcons Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Next over to the stall of Mas Martinet. We started with the Escurҫons. An old acquaintance. I think this vintage has not been released yet because the vintage on the bottle had been manually altered. This vintage is promising good. Young of course but already showing encouraging signs. Dark fruit and very nice acid.
As an aside then we have been experiencing inferior cork quality from this producer, mainly on the Martinet Bru wine. We have seen two to three year old bottles with corks saturated almost through. Not long ago I opened a bottle with cork in this condition. I kept it and brought it with me in case I would meet people from Mas Martinet. At the stall. We broached this subject and expressed our concerns of cork quality. I dug up the cork and the representative from the winery conceded that this was not a good example. This was the 2017 vintage and the wine had seeped through two thirds of the cork. In addition it was soft in places. Nice to be able to give this feedback with concrete evidence.

2017 Mas Martinet Priorat Cami Pesseroles Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Like the Escurҫons probably not released yet. Similar structure. Dark fruit, cherries. Surprisingly balanced for such a young wine. Excellent.

2017 Mas Martinet Priorat Clos Martinet Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

2018 Mas Doix Priorat Murmuri Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
I gather that this is the first vintage of this wine. Agreeable but not earth shattering. Fresh and with citrus tones. To be consumed cold. Nice label. Funny thing is that on the Mas Doix website this wine is not yet mentioned!

2016 Mas Doix Priorat 1903 Centenary Grenache Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
The people at Mas Doix were generous enough to let us taste the 1903 centenary grenache wine. A fabulous wine, the best one at this event (except maybe for the 1902 from Mas Doix). Harmonious, everything in right place. Great freshness. Only downside is the price tag of around 200€.
Red
2015 Mas Doix Priorat Centenary Carignan 1902 Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
The people at Mas Doix not only allowed us to taste the 1903 but also the similarly impressive 1902 wine. Whereas the 1903 is 100% garnatxa this wine is 100% carinyena (carignan). A fabulous wine. Incredibly smooth and silky on the tongue. It will almost certainly improve over the next 3-5 years. Along with the 1903 wine the absolute peak of this tasting. 94-96 for now.

2014 Mas Igneus Priorat FA 206 Vinyes de Coster Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

2018 Gratavinum Priorat GV5 Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Normally GV5 needs four to five years to get around. Much too young of course. Therefore it was surprising how accessible the wine was already. Very dark. Lots of complexity. Will be interesting to taste this in say four to five years.

2016 Terroir Al Limit Soc. Lda. Priorat Terroir Historic Blanc Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
At the beginning we were jumping from one stall to another because the place was really crowded, so please bear with me. We started at the Terroir al Limit and then we moved to some Montsant producer and then to Terroir al Limit again. Entry level Terroir al Limit. Might be the only white they produce and it is good. All about minerals and very dry and fresh. I liked it. Excellent QPR for 17€.

2016 Terroir Al Limit Soc. Lda. Priorat L'Arbossar Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
If the Torroja did not impress me then what can I say about this one. Costs the double of Torroja (around 60€) and it is a better wine for sure. But for me it is nowhere in the range of proper 60€ Priorat wines. Overpriced.

2014 Orto Vins Les Tallades de Cal Nicolau Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Montsant
The wines of Montsant are often undrerated and I think this one is. Turns out that this wine is made from the grape picapo. (unknown to me until this tasting event). And it is quite a nice variety. About as scarce as the Italiian sagrantino grape. Nice to know that someone cares about those indigenous grapes.

I could not find anything about this wine neither on Cellar Tracker (I had to create the wine on CT) nor on Vivino. Even on the producer's website this wine is not listed. Maybe this is a new addition to the portfolio. If i had realized at the time I would have asked. Whatever, I liked this the best of all the Ficaria selection. Round, balanced and tasting good.
Red
2017 Celler de Capçanes Montsant La Nit de les Garnatxes Argila Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Montsant
The stall of Celler de Capҫanes was very interesting. The winery produces four different types of grenache wines all from different kinds of soil. Firstly we tasted wine from clay soil (argila) then we had a sip of a wine from slate soil (llicorella). There was also a version from chalky soil (calissa) and finally a wine from sandy soil (panal). All the bottles were magnums. Impressive. The soil was clearly affecting the taste as the wines tasted very differently. Some more rustic than the others other more acidic and so on. Not very big wines but clearly well made.

Only two wines tasted at this stand. The Jove Coster which was average and then this one which was spectacular. From a magnum. The bouquet is very nice. Polished and extravagant. Tastes jummy. Smooth tannins, dark fruits. A bit of sweetness. Balanced. Silky smooth. Costs around 60€ for a magnum. Good price in my opinion.

More to my liking than the +7 from the same producer. Old vines. Light in colour (aren't the all?). Sweet tones like caramel on the tongue. Then dark fruits. Some coffee and chocolate notes in the end. Good wine.

Arriving to the stall of Cal Grau. Started with this. Light in colour. Typical garnatxa smell. Fresh on the tongue. Red berries. Accessible. Easy quaffer.

2016 Agnes de Cervera Priorat La Petite Agnes Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Very nice bouquet. Flowery and mostly lavender. Also red fruit but less prominent. On the tongue red fruit, mostly. There is more to this wine than the basic La ninota. However, I'm not sold to this idea yet. I know that some of my fellow tasters have brought this in to the cold country. So I would like to get a second stab at this to assess it better.

More interesting than the petite Agnes in my opinion. Colour is medium garnet. Classic garnatxa on the nose. Smoky tones as well. On the tongue some burnt notes and then red fruit. More complex than the petite Agnes but not by far. Don't know the price difference. If it is small my vote would go to this one.

Medium dark coloured. 100% carinyena. Typical carinyena smell. Sweet with hints of caramel. Tannins not resolved yet and a bit too much oak for my taste for now. Young of course so it could resolve with time. I think the ingredients are there for a good result. 89 for now with an upside.

2017 Mas de l’Abundància Montsant Hema Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Montsant

Rather dark in colour. Very nice nose. Red berries, solvents and some flowery notes afterwards. On the tongue: Blueberries, liquorice and also minerals. Easy going entry level wine and a good one for that purpose.

Lighter in colour than the Hema tasted previously. Canned strawberries and pineapples on the nose (strange but true). Much better in the mouth than the rather strange nose. Red fruits mainly. Balanced and polished. We were told that the price point of this wine was approximately 12€ which sounds reasonable.

1566 bottles made. The colour of this wine looked a bit cloudy. Medium dark garnet. Closed on the nose. When tasted it was round with soft tannins. Long aftertaste. For me this did not deliver much in addition to the Fluminis.

This was the last wine that we tasted from this producer. Only 250 bottles were made. 100% carinyena. On the nose burnt notes and mineral tones. Cherries and oak on the tongue. Tannins still very pronounced. Young. Would be interesting to taste this in 3-4 years.

Like the Petit Pissarres rather light in colour. Stronger bouquet than from the Petit wine. On the tongue. Red berries, cherries. Some spices too. A hint of minerals is evident. Better wine than the Petit counterpart. Costs 15€ to 10€ for the Petit version though.

I was very happy with this at the Torroja del Priorat event the day before. Nice to get to retaste the wine and it did not disappoint. !00% carinyena (carignan). Light in colour. Sweet caramel tones on the nose. Red berries on the tongue. Some minerals as well. Very balanced. Very good.

Flight 10 - A visit to the Mas d'en Gil winery (2019-05-06) (7 notes)

White
2015 Mas d'en Gil Priorat Coma Alta Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Visit to the Mas d'en Gil winery. This wine was enjoyed in the vineyard with some tapas refreshments as well. Very good wine. Dry, crisp. Very good acidity. Good fruit too. Fine with the food.
White
2017 Mas d´en Gil Priorat Bellmunt Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Moving to the winery it self. We were treated with Bellmunt. Not as complex as the Coma Alta. It is nevertheless quite nice. Green apples, freshness. Costs around 12€ which is not much in my opinion.
White
2015 Mas d'en Gil Priorat Coma Blanca Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
After the Bellmunt the top white from Mas d'en Gil, Coma Blanca was opened along with some light refreshments. Very good white. Much rounder and fuller than the two preceding wines. Perfect balance. Good acidity.
Red
2016 Bellmunt Priorat Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
When we had done with the whites we were invited to a three course dinner with Mas d'en Gil wines. With the first course we got to taste the Bellmunt. Nice enough wine. Fresh and with lots of fruits. Nowhere in the league of Coma Vella (its bigger brother), however. Costs around 14€ which is reasonable.

2014 Mas d'en Gil Priorat Clos Fontà Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Next up with the main course was the top red from Mas d'en Gil. Extremely good. From old vines. Fresh. Balanced. Tasting good. Anyone in possession of this wine is in for a treat. Should last at least 10 to 15 years from now.

2005 Mas d'en Gil Priorat Clos Fontà Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
After the main course there were served cheeses. Our host treated us with a jeroboam bottle of this beauty. Nine years older than the preceding wine but otherwise the same wine. A beautiful wine. Very harmonious and structured. Great balance and still utterly fresh. I would rate this at 94-95.
Red - Sweet/Dessert
2014 Mas d'en Gil Priorat Nus Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Lastly we got to taste this sweet wine with the dessert. Like other wines at this visit it was very good. Went well with some Catalunyan chocolate buns.

Flight 11 - A visit to Silvia Puig (7 notes)

White
2018 En Numeros Vermells Garnatxa Blanca Del Carlos Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
87 points
Light in colour. On the nose pears, apples, grass and some nutty tones. Tasted rather warm, at 16°C. On the tongue some bitterness to start with followed by nutty taste. Acid level is good and the wine is balanced. Bottle #687 of 1400.
White
2018 En Numeros Vermells Pedro Ximénez Del Carlos Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

The colour is similar to the first wine we tasted. So is the nose. Maybe a bit sweeter on the nose, though. Tasting the wine it revealed more sweetness than the garnatxa blanca version. Much heavier and denser too. Honey, butter, lard leap to mind. Silvia said it would be advisable to keep it for three years for the wine to develop. Bottle #3 of 700.

Medium dark in colour. Very bright and beautiful bouquet. Solvents, marzipan and cherries mainly to start with. Later on there appeared spicy notes, pepper mainly and also toasted bread and chocolate. Tannins still a bit tight. Very fresh on the tongue. Very good wine which will only get better. Bottle #1604 of 2080.

The colour is very similar to the 2017 vintage of this wine. On the nose more solvents and minerals. Less fruit. Orange zest. Leather and car shed maybe? On the tongue dark fruits, plums, chocolate and coffee. Tannins more prominent and probably more acid too. Good, but for my palate the 2017 edged it slightly. Bottle #630 of 1611.

The white label. Rather dark in the glass. Great smell. Heavy and thick. Dark fruits, spices and flowery tones. Soft and polished on the tongue. Good but for some reason the white label (garnatxa-syrah) has never appealed as much to me as the black label (garnatxa-carinyena). Bottle #1350 of 1700.

Very dark in colour. From 100 year old vines. Tiny production of around 900 bottles. Lots of solvents and glue on the nose initially. Followed by fragrant red fruits. On the palate black cherries. Beautifully balanced with good acid. Tannins can be felt. In the end coffee and cocoa. Changes in the glass after a while some spices developed. Wine which needs time. Already terrific but will without doubt get better. Bottle #696 of 911.

This was blended straight from barrels by Silvia. Very dark in colour. Very lovely smell. A bit sweet. Boiled sweets, Dark and red berries, cherries, raspberries. Good balance. Succulent.

After the Aiaiai we tasted some barrel samples:

Garnatxa 2018. Very good. Very spicy and fresh on the tongue.Car shed and glue/solvents on the nose.

Garnatxa peluda 2018. Much more closed than the garnatxa. Sweet on the tongue. Spicy and balanced.

Garnatxa peluda and syrah blend 2018. Very sweet. Strawberries, cherries and creamy notes. Soft and balanced.

Shyrah 2018. Dark in colour. Closed initially. Then minerals, earthy notes, forest floor and maybe sheep pen on the nose. Tannins are pronounced. Not yet resolved. This needs time to develop.

Garnatxa and carinyena 2018. Nice and agreeable bouquet. Black currant and jam on the nose. On the tongue balanced. Dark fruit, sandalwood and cigars on the tongue.

Lastly we tasted two samples from 100 year old vines. Used in the 100% carinyena. The grapes from the top of the vineyard and the bottom are vinified separately.
From the top of the plot: Beautiful bouquet. Earth, horse shed, sweetness, jam, violets. On the tongue incredibly balanced and fresh. Mostly cherries but in the aftertaste coffee and chocolate.
From the lower half of the plot: Not as dense as the previous sample. The acid is more pronounced. Lighter wood.

If those barrel samples are anything to go by we are in for a treat when the 2018 vintage is released.

Flight 12 - A visit to the Perinet winery. (4 notes)

Red
2017 Perinet Priorat Perinet Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Sample from a stainless steel tank. Solvents and then dark fruits on the nose. There were dark fruits, coconut and toffee on the tongue. We thought it was more carinyena driven than garnatxa. Very soft and balanced. It was also wonderfully fresh. Very good wine.
Red
2017 Perinet Merit Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Very dark in colour. The bouquet was direct and persistent. Sweet tones, caramel then cherries. On the tongue red fruit, coffee and chocolate. Very balanced. Sediment was evident.

Closing

Flight 1. For me the best wine by far was the Scala Dei. To be expected as it was the most expensive wine in the tasting. The wine which was most appealing to me considering the price was Baigorri. A really good wine for a very reasonable price. In fact the most exiting Rioja (apart from El Belisario) I have tasted for a long time.

Flight 2. Highlights were Carenyeta from Cal Pla and Triaca. Only five wines tasted at this venue.

Flight 3. There were several very good wines in this flight. Reds that caught attention were: Gratavinum GV5, Els Escurҫons, the Viern from Vega Aixala and Saurí. There were also good whites like Venus de Cartoixa and rosés like Comalat Gavernera.

Flight 4. Trying to pick out the best wines in this tasting is very hard as there were so many good wines. Ardevol and Destí were wines that I didn't know before and were really good. Other extremely good wines were: Vall Llach Porrera, Ferrer Bobet Selecció Especial, Clos Dominic Selecció Andreu to name just few.

Flight 5. Here I found five reds standing out: Clos Figueres from Clos Figueras, Roca Grisa from Marc Abella, Carinyena from En Numeros Vermells, Pam de Nas from Trossos del Priorat and Clos Fonta from Mas d'en Gil. Apart from that one white, the Abracadabra from Trossos and one cava Macaro Brut Gran Reserva caught my attention. Extra mention to Cruor, Coma Vella and Vall Por for exceptional price performance.

Flight 6: There were many exceptionally good wines at this tasting. For an inexpensive but very good wine i would suggest d'Iatra. There was one very good cava producer, Colet, present. I liked their selection a lot. Then there were heavy weights like Doix, Rocapoll, Dofí, Clos Mogador and Vuit. All terrific wines but all in price class between 60 to 80€. For the 1902 and 1903 Doix you have to chuck up 240€. Are they worth it? I'm not sure but they are good for sure.

Flight 7. I tasted lots of wines at this event. Standing out were: Granit from Josep Grau. Very good white wine. Venus La Universal was the best rosé in the entire trip for me. Sauri both the regular one and the old vines version are solid buys. Les Clivelles de Torroja from Celler Aixalà Alcait is also a very good not so expensive wine. Lastly there were heavyweights like Dits del Terra from Terroir al Limit, Aquilera from L'Infernal and Coster de l'Alzina from Celler Aixalà Alcait which were all very good.

Flight 8. Three wines stood out here in my opinion. Les Eres Vinyes Velles, very good wine. Les Eres les Especiel del Carners which is a fabulous wine and Mon Classic. A really interesting wine.

Flight 9. For an easy drinking young wine Cap de Ruc Vi Novell Vinyes Seleccionades does the job. For the heavier wines Tane Coster de l'Avi is awesome. Might be hard to find as I got the impression that this was a tiny winery.

Flight 10. An absolute standout was the 2005 Clos Fontà. A marvellous wine.

Flight 11. For me the Aiaiai and the carinyena were the most interesting wines here. Some of the barrel samples were terrific too.

Flight 12. Although I only wrote four tasting notes from this visit there was much more going on. We tasted a lot of barrel samples from plots facing east, west and south. Samples from top of vineyards and bottom of vineyards. It is hard to reflect all that in a tasting note as we don't know where it will all end up. Finally we tasted samples from four single vineyards, all exceptionally good. If this visit is anything to go by the Perinet winery is worth watching in the future.
