Flight 1 - Rheinhessen - Morstein (3 notes)

White
2009 Weingut Keller Morstein Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Rheinhessen
93 points
Glass: Zalto Universal
*** just some brief notes, no full details, rating in context of the vertical tasting ***
Opened about 10h before, not decanted.
Youthful pale golden color. Classic Keller nose with some pineapple and mineral notes. Lots of extract and/or some residual sugar which makes it a bit sweeter. Great pressure on the palate, pineapple, herbs, wonderful mineral core. Very long, young. Potential for another decade. My favorite of the Morstein flight. 93+
White
2009 Wittmann Westhofener Morstein Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Rheinhessen
92 points
Glass: Zalto Universal
*** just some brief notes, no full details, rating in context of the vertical tasting ***
Opened about 10h before, double decanted. Tasted blind.
Clear, medium golden color. Clean, medium intense, developing nose. Very dense and dark aromas mixed with chalky mineral notes.
Dry, medium (-) ripe acidity. On the palate a beautiful mix of ripe pineapple and other stone fruit, some smokiness, lots of mineral notes, a bit of green, phenolic notes. Lots of extract and pressure, very dense and great tension, combined with a beautiful balance. Wonderful length. Seems still quite young. 92-93

Glass: Zalto Universal
*** just some brief notes, no full details, rating in context of the vertical tasting ***
Opened about 10h before, double decanted. Tasted blind.
Clear, medium golden color. A bit more focused and concentrated than the regular Morstein GG. Quite young, will certainly develop for at least 5+ years. 92-93

Flight 2 - Nahe (3 notes)

What a flight! Nahe was certainly a step up from the Morstein flight!

Youthful pale golden color. Fantastic, medium+ intense nose: Some reductive (Sponti) notes, lots of fruit, elder blossoms, herbs, mineral notes. Complex, multi-layered and airy.
On the palate really amazing! Incredible pressure and tension. Wonderful aromas of ripe exotic fruit, pineapple, herbs, saltiness. Depth and balance. Wonderful length. At its peak, but will stay there for at least 5+ years. One of my WOTN! 96-97

Youthful pale golden color. HH and Halenberg had a hard stand in this flight against the amazing Felseneck. All wines in this flight were a step up from the previous Morstein flight. Wonderful nose, great balance, round, wonderful length. Lacks a bit of the vibrant energy and tension of the Felseneck, but still very good. No need to hurry. 94+

Youthful pale golden color. HH and Halenberg had a hard stand in this flight against the amazing Felseneck. All wines in this flight were a step up from the previous Morstein flight. Wonderful nose, with lots of sweet fruit, complex. Lovely perfume!
Great balance, round, wonderful length, juicy with a beautiful mineral core. Not at its full peak, give it a few more years. 2nd in the Nahe flight. 94-95

93 points
Glass: Zalto Universal

Opened about 10h before, not decanted. Tasted blind.
Youthful pale golden color. Together with Trimbach FE the driest wine in this tasting. It had a hard stand against the other wines that had a bit more residual sugar and more ripe, sweet fruit. Not even close to its peak! Very fine and elegant, lean, but also with great pressure and depth. Keep your hands of for at least 5+ years and you will be greatly rewarded. It has all it needs to reach 96+ in the future. At this stage good 93++

Youthful pale golden color. Faszinating wine and a worthy “opponent” to the Schlossberg. A bit funky nose that gained depth and complexity with air. Beautiful flavors of herbs, tobacco, ripe yellow stone fruit and an amazing mineral core. Great depth, also very elegant. Rounder and softer as the Schlossberg. At its peak, will stay there for at least 5+ years. 94-95

Flight 4 - Wachau vs Pfalz (2 notes)

Schütt and Saumagen matched very well. Fantastic wines with bright future.

Youthful pale golden color. Wonderful complex and deep nose. Together with SF Felseneck and Singerriedel. Light and airy, beautiful fruit, citrus, herbs.
On the palate really wow! Quite lean, but with an amazing depth, balance and tension. Like a bit leaner brother of the Felseneck. Great mineral notes, beautiful ripe stone fruit, fresh garden herbs. Very long and lingering finish. Best PQR of the tasting! 95-96

Opened about 10h before, double decanted. Tasted blind.
Clean, medium golden color. Clear, medium+ intense nose with lots of herbs and anise. Very deep and special.
Still very (maybe too young), but it benefited greatly from the double decant. Most open Auslese R I had after 10 years’ time. Lean, precise, focused, driven by herbs and anise. Great depth and balance. Will even get better over the next 5-10 years! One of the most pleasurable surprises of the evening! 94++

Flight 5 - Pfalz (3 notes)

2009 A. Christmann Konigsbacher Idig Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Pfalz

Opened about 10h before, not decanted. Tasted blind.
Youthful pale golden color. Beautiful ripe and rather baroque nose with lots of ripe stone fruit and acacia.
On the palate also very baroque in the best sense: Wonderful perfume, ripe, sweet fruit, herbs, acacia and some zesty, bitter notes at the end. Great pressure and tension, round and balanced, nice length. Quite youthful with great potential. Now the second time that Idig positively surprised me! 93-94+

Clean, medium golden color. This wine polarized. Even though it was double decanted, it needed time and air in the glass to fully blossom. Nevertheless, still very young, so give it at least 5+ years. Elegance and depth of a real Grand Cru! Some honeydew, zests, herbs and a beautiful, dark mineral core. Rather lean. Way better than the bottle I had a few weeks ago. Great length. 94++

Youthful pale golden color. Youngest wine in this flight from the flavor perspective. Citrus notes in the nose and a fresh, lemon acidity on the palate. Great balance, nice depth. Worthy opponent in this flight. With a bit more complexity it could gain a few points more. 92-93

Flight 6 - Wachau (2 notes)

Great performance of these two Icons.

White
2009 Franz Hirtzberger Riesling Smaragd Singerriedel Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

Opened about 10h before, not decanted. Tasted blind.
Youthful pale golden color. Together with the Felseneck and Schütt the most intense and complex nose. Layers of aromas with ripe yellow fruit, garden herbs, blossoms, wet stone. Could smell that forever.
On the palate an enormous pressure, great depth and tension. Lots of extract. Bold, but not broad. Lots of herbs, anise, ripe yellow fruit and incredible mineral core. Veery long! Great potential for at least another decade. 95-96+
White
2009 F.X. Pichler Riesling Unendlich Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
95 points
Glass: Zalto Universal
*** just some brief notes, no full details, rating in context of the vertical tasting ***
Opened about 10h before, not decanted. Tasted blind.
Unfortunately not decanted. At first a bit fat and chubby, but got much leaner and precise with air, so decant and give it air! This is massive, but also impressive. 14,5% abv is not everyone’s cup of tea, but it is never too hot. Lots of extract and concentration. Great depth, minerality and wonderful ripe, clear fruit. Length is really infinite (“unendlich”). Wonderful experience! 94-95+

Flight 7 - Alsace (1 note)

White
2009 Trimbach Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile France, Alsace
93 points
Glass: Zalto Universal
*** just some brief notes, no full details, rating in context of the vertical tasting ***
Opened about 10h before, not decanted. Tasted blind.
Classic Trimbach. Nose very lean, driven by first signs of petrol and mineral notes. With Schlossberg the driest wine of the tasting. Had a hard stand against the rather fruit driven wines of this tasting. Very lean, focus and precise. Lase sharp, beautiful depth and great length. Will continue to evolve and can gain a few more points. 92-93

Closing

Most homogenous “10 years after” I had so far! All wines were on a very high level. Hard to pick some real favorites. For me the three WOTN were Felseneck, Schütt and Singerriedel.
