Flight 1 (8 notes)

White
2015 Weingut Schnaitmann Sauvignon Blanc Reserve Germany, Württemberg
87 points
Ripe pear, cider, a touch of acacia, vanilla and a slightly green component on the nose. Also already in the nose a bit of "warmness". On the palate lots of extract, quite voluminous but with a good mouthfeel and also the acidity plays on a good level. On the back end a bit bitter and a bit hot.
Got it double blind and never in thousand years thought it could be a Sauvignon Blanc. Interesting to taste.
Red
2009 Friedrich Becker Sankt Paul Spätburgunder Großes Gewächs Germany, Pfalz
91 points
Perfect example for a German Pinot Noir imo. The nose is a mix of strawberry and raspberry mixed with a good portion of vanilla and a nutty component (way too much oak imo). Gets better with time but absolutely not my preferred style. Better on the palate although the oak also dominates here. The acidity plays on a medium level. Harmonic mouthfeel, good length. Without a doubt this wine has a certain level of quality but again: Just not my style.
Beer
2017 Cantillon Brewery Gueuze Cuveé Saint-Gilloise Belgium, Brussels
Brought by Markus and it was a nice contrast. Only heard of this very famous beer producer. On the nose lots of soap, kefir, slightly vomit but also a bit of white peach. On the palate extremely sour and with a VERY high acidity. Very refreshing but I doubt you can drink a bottle on your own. No rating here.
White
2009 Wittmann Westhofener Morstein Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Rheinhessen
92 points
Typical "Rheinhessen notes" of ripe pineapple, apple, ripe pear and some yellow stone fruit. Also a bit of smoke coming around. Very dense and bold nose, needs air or some more time in the bottle. On the palate also a good amount of extract but also the power of the Morstein but in this case in a bold way (if you drink a Morstein from a cooler vintage it also has the power but with more precision and vibrancy). The mineral core is there but it is rapped into a bit too much sweetness to be a great Morstein. Still on the young side. I doubt he will ever loose his baby fat but who knows. Better let your bottles sleep for another 5-10 years.
Red
2008 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay Vendanges Sélectionnées France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay
92 points
Compared to the Becker we had before I liked this a lot more because this is what I search for in Pinot. Elegance, straightness and precision. Very similar to my impression in 2016. Red currant, earth and some herbal notes on the nose. Minimalistic and straightforwardly. On the palate wiry with a lively acidity, so fresh and vital. Harmonic without being otherworldly complex. A lovely wine to drink.

1990 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
92 points
A very clear nose with a mix of vanilla, citrus, bee-wax, ripe yellow stone fruit and herbs. On the palate light (typical SL) with this certain calmness only a handful of vintners can deliver. Straight with a high level of acidity. Juicy and airy. A wonderful Spätlese from a special vintage.
White - Off-dry
2004 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
92 points
A very young, lean reductive nose (high on the Sulfur, typical Prüm). Citrus, fresh white sliced pear and the typical slate notes. On the palate also very airy (more Spätlese than Auslese in style), elegant and precise but still so unbelievable young. Give it 15, better 20 more years.

1993 J. Lauerburg Bernkasteler Doctor Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

What a deep nose, so typical for this special vineyard. Super ripe apricot, nearly a bit of raisins and brown earth (this is so typical for the Doctor vineyard imo). Very harmonious on the palate, lovely acidity, good length. Still so nice to drink.
