A Few Wines with BBQ

Chez Whitehead - Northbrook IL

Tasted May 26, 2019 by Burgundy Al with 69 views

Introduction

Great barbecue courtesy of Jordan. Many good wines, but slightly more than usual didn't live up to expectations. And it was a fruit day.

Flight 1 (19 notes)

White - Sparkling
2008 Legras & Haas Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
From magnum. Good richness and concentration, but very intensely in the bready, oxidative style that doesn't thrill me.
Rosé
2016 Triennes Rosé France, Provence, Mediterranée
85 points
Very enjoyable summer wine with berry and apple hints, good balance.
White
2014 Jarvis (California) Winery Chardonnay Finch Hollow Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
83 points
Small glass, brief note. Too extremely ripe for my preference, lacking brightness to me. Others liked this more.
Red
1986 Château Clerc Milon France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
flawed
Slightly madeirized.
Red
2000 Château Palmer France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Small glass, brief note. So much here with clearly ripe fruit, but a firmly structured character that comes across as backward today. Great potential, but give this more time in the cellar or lots of time in a decanter.

Red
2005 Lucie & Auguste Lignier Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Chaffots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
91 points
From magnum. Tasted several times through the day. Charming red cherry aromas with sweet and savory spice. Slightly backward palate to start, then more forthcoming an hour+ later with very elegant tannins. Just barely entering its peak drinking window, this will drink well for at least another decade.
Red
2016 Walt Pinot Noir Rosella's Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands
89 points
Small glass, brief note. I have heard good things about Walt, but have had little experience. Clearly very ripe, but plenty of nuance and well and nearly good balance. Enjoyed this quite a bit today. Best to enjoy young.
Red
1989 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
A very tired bottle.
Red
2016 Pax Syrah Sonoma Hillsides USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Tasted twice today, both small glasses. I was told this was a "100 point" wine. Is that a joke? It is a pleasant enough Syrah with charming aromas, but frankly simple and clearly hollow in the middle. Maybe an off bottle, but this was an 86-87 point wine today.

2014 Myriad Cellars Syrah Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
Small glass, brief note. Ripe but spicy and charming aromas. More ripe flavors, retaining balance. Not exactly my preferred style, but well made and enjoyable.
White
2011 Shibumi Knoll Chardonnay Buena Tierra Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Small glass, brief note. Enjoyable, but just dominated by its ripeness right now. Some structure on finish gives me hope.
White
2015 E. Guigal Condrieu La Doriane France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
93 points
Small glass, brief note. Stone fruit, candied lemon peel and summer flowers galore with ginger hints. Intense concentration with enough brightness and length to make this so exciting. Best now through 2023.

2014 Recanati Wild Carignan Reserve Judean Hills Israel, Judean Hills
Small glass, brief note. Pleasant black fruit, just more firm tannins than I would prefer. Good weight, good enough. Slightly coarse finish.
Red
2009 Sine Qua Non Syrah The Thrill of... USA, California, Central Coast
Tasted double blind after it was popped-decanted-and-poured. I thought it needed so much more air that it came across as harsh, backward and tightly wound. Better 30 minutes later when re-tasted, but this was oddly nowhere near the level of previous bottles.
Red
2005 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Laurence France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Small glass, brief note. Lots here with intense concentration, but more brett than I personally find enjoyable.
Red
2008 Sea Smoke Pinot Noir Southing USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills
88 points
Small glass, brief note. This exceeded my expectations, both in terms of its remaining freshness and good overall balance. Mostly black fruit maturing gracefully, with sweet spice and good length.

1999 Noon Eclipse Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
86 points
Small glass, brief note. Mostly mature black fruit that I am certain was once powerful and enticing, but not just mature. And the heat hasn't gone anywhere.
Red
2014 Kongsgaard Syrah Hudson Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
Small glass, brief note. There is a lot here with so much density. Plenty of black cherry and plum with anise, black pepper and dried herbs. Clearly ripe and high octane, but this has the elegant structure to keep everything together. I liked this wine, but am certain others loved it.

1997 Ojai Syrah Cuvée Henry Daniel USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley
From magnum. Very good, but I recall enjoying it more a decade ago when it was brighter and fresher. Still plenty of ripe fruit, but less elegant today than in its youth. Still, 89-90 point wine today.
