Introduction

We had a group of 11 at Tilia tonight. Nice event with some excellent older wines.

Flight 1 (15 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Borgo Maragliano Chardonnay Brut Italy, Piedmont, Asti, Loazzolo
85 points
Light straw color. Small glass. Ordered this off the list so we didn't have to start with the big gun. Not really what we were looking for, but oh well. Sweetish, lager-like, pear, a little awkward and light.
White - Sparkling
2002 Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Cuvée Rare France, Champagne
94 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. This bottle really felt youthful compared to others; full of fresh ocean breezes and lively fruits, marzipan, quince, mineral and a fine bead. The palate is energetic, more medium plus bodied, toast, but nearly as much as other bottles, apple, apple skin, a little chalk, very bright and long.

White
2012 Domaine Serene Chardonnay Recolte Grand Cru USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
90 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. A little on the flabby side, match stick, very mineral driven, spice, oak. This is full bodied and complex with a somewhat dried, stark finish. This may well be on the downward trajectory. 89 to 90pts.
White
2014 Antica Terra Chardonnay Aurata USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Light gold color. Small glass over 45 minutes. Lots going on here, both good and not so good. It goes back and forth for me several times. Lots of oak, bitter on the finish, golden fruits. This really needs to integrate - if it will. This was the second time having this wine with a disappointing result.
Red
1985 Château Kirwan France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
88 points
Dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour. Same bottle as 10centpower. I agree, a little tired, but it did get a bit better with some air. Nothing to complain about here. Good aged Bordeaux, earthen, musty, leather and more muted dark kirsch on the nose. The palate is ab out what you'd expect, a little rustic, kirsch, dark berriies, oak, earth. Just doesn;t have the fruit to fully carry it anymore. 88+ to 89pts over 30+ minutes.
Red
1985 Château Le Bon Pasteur France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
90 points
Same bottle as JCGuthrie and I think his take and Jeff Leve's are pretty accurate. This has a pretty great nose to start; lots of earth, nice pencil notes, and considerably more fruit - dark- than the '85 Kirwan. Firmish tannins and maybe a bit of a hollow spot in the mid palate, but this is classic and very good. Drink these sooner than later. 90+pts.
Red
1989 Château Cantemerle France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
94 points
Dark red color; no bricking. PNP, drank a glass over an hour. Well there ya go. This was flat out brilliant. Best of the '89 I've had by a goood margin and they're all been quite good. Just a beautiful nose on this; really perfumed, mint, lots of fine leather, dried earth, violet, red fruited. This just builds and build in the glass, quite exhilarating I'd say. Medium full bodied, drinking with such maturity, yet age defying in other ways with its brightness and depth. Very pretty red fruits, floral, so giving , just a pristine bottle. Don't see how this can get better, but in my opinion it has the fruit and depth to go another 10 years.
Red
2002 Louis Jadot Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
92 points
Dark red color. Had gotten 1:45hr slow ox; drank a glass over an hour. Same bottle as Bellissimo. This has a great nose that surpasses the palate. The nose is filled with earth, funk, cherry, leather and mushroom. The palate has a medium full body, spicy, dark red fruit, a significant amount of wood still remains, and the finish just comes off rough and mars it a little. That said, the nose alone is worth 92pts and as Matt notes this is well served by food. 91+ to 92pts.
Red
2014 Bergström Pinot Noir Le Pré du Col Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
91 points
Medium red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour. Boy this is still really young, very herbaceous, candied cherry kool aid and awood essence on the nose. The palate is very big and primary, forward, candied cherry, good, but the context was wrong in group of old world, aged wines. I'd still give this another 1-2 years.

Red
1995 Château Haut-Bailly France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
89 points
VEry dark red color. Drank a glass over an hour. This had a splash decant and could have used a good bit more decanter time. Still pretty harsh rustic tannins, dark fruits, graphite and char. This was improving in the glass. We've had more realized bottles in the past. 89 to 90(+)pts with some upside.

Red
1995 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
93 points
Very dark red color. One hour decant; drank a glass over an hour plus. Lots of eucalyptus up front on the nose and palate, pretty dark mountain fruit, very aromatic, cassis, blackberry and blackberry liqueur, medium full bodied. Really good, though it shows some heat on the finish after an hour. These have been very consistent; plenty in the tank. 92+ to 93pts.
Red
2009 Altamura Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
91 points
Very dark red red/purple color. PNP, drank a glass over 40 minutes. This was much better than the last time we had it. Licorice, really dark fruits, oil and earth tones, dark chocolate, cocoa beans, blackberry, dense and full bodied. This really hits you on the attack and then fans out acrosss the palate. Hi octane, but smooth andholds together well now. Adds a little blue fruit over time.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2009 Château d'Yquem Declassified France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
90 points
Still bright and tropical, spice, coconut. 90+pts.
White - Fortified
1971 D'Oliveiras Madeira Terrantez Portugal, Madeira
92 points
Medium amber color. Shared a glass with several people. Very good, raisin, date, black fruit, toffee, sweet.
White - Fortified
1977 D'Oliveiras Madeira Boal Portugal, Madeira
Dark amber color. Interesting nose; smells like a remodeling project in your home, paint, very dark, concentrated, youthful, chemical smells. I like it, but different.
