Introduction

Wines were tasted double blind in random flights. Each flight is tasted, discussed, and revealed prior to moving on to the next flight.

Flight 1 - Starters (2 notes)

A couple of nonblind starters

White - Sparkling
N.V. Bouquin Dupont Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
89 points
Apple, alomnd and dough. Citrus, apple and marzipan on the palate. Medium bead. Mineral tinged finish.
Rosé
2017 Domaine de Mourchon Côtes du Rhône Villages Séguret Rosé Loubié France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Villages Séguret
90 points
Courtesy of D&L. Pale color with lovely berry, watermelon and mineral notes on the nose and palate. Light but noticeable acidity. Very pretty.

Flight 2 - Warm ups (4 notes)

Double blind for the group; I knew the order. I noticed we were down to our last of the '16 Lewis and having just received some of the '18, I thought it might be fun to have a small vertical. The '16 was perhaps a little bit light on fruit, but only by comparison to the subsequent vintages. The group was split between the '17 and '18 as the favorite. In my opinion, the sweet spot for the Lewis Vin Gris is one year after release...so we will drink the '17s this year, and drink our '18s (just released this week) in the summer of 2020.

Rosé
2016 Bodegas Muga Rioja Rosado Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
Berry and floral notes give way to an odd chemical note.
Rosé
2016 Lewis Cellars Syrah Vin Gris USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Ruby color. Wild strawberry and rose petal notes with underlying spice. Maybe just a bit short on fruit compared to the last two wines in the flight.
Rosé
2017 Lewis Cellars Syrah Vin Gris USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Similar to the 2016 with a great wild strawberry element, but just a bit more fruit with raspberry and currant notes. Good acidity & balance. 91-92 pts.
Rosé
2018 Lewis Cellars Syrah Vin Gris USA, California, Napa Valley
91 points
Wild strawberry, melon and raspberry. Nicely balanced; spice coming in on the finish. 91+ pts.

Flight 3 - Reds (5 notes)

Red
2016 Girard Grenache USA, California, North Coast
92 points
Double blind. Aromas of cherry, tea and earth. Somewhat rich texture with cherry, earth and spice notes. It didn't quite seem like pinot but I didn't have any other guesses. Very enjoyable though.
Red
2012 Anthill Farms Pinot Noir Peters Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
90 points
Double blind. Cherry, sour red berry fruit, tea and a hint of spice. Light-bodied with cherry, tea, forest floor and red berry fruit. Very nice. Guessed pinot. 90-91 pts.
Red
2014 Hahn Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California
88 points
Double blind. Dark fruit, chocolate and herb notes. The palate follows the bouquet. Medium- to full-bodied. Given the herbal notes that were quite prominent, I guessed cab franc.
Red
2014 Fontanella Family Wines Santo Di Ladro (Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Cabernet) USA, California, Napa Valley, Mt. Veeder
85 points
Double blind. Atomas of currants, plum and florals. Medium-bodied and lacking fruit on the palate. No guess.
Red
2011 Clos du Mont-Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Double blind. Aromas of dark fruit and something odd which we all struggled to identify. I could only describe it as what I think a stale peep must smell like- not a good thing. Much better on the palate though, showing red berry fruit, earth and spice. Another that I struggled to identify- no guess.

Flight 4 - Reds (5 notes)

Red
2012 Schweiger Vineyards Cabernet Franc USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District
89 points
Double blind. Opens with a subtle herbal note along with red fruit and chocolate. There's a hint of sourness to the fruit. Red fruit on the palate with an earthy clay note in the finish. On the full side of medium-bodied, with medium tannins. All in all, a nice wine. Guessed Napa cab sauv.
Red
2007 Cuvée du Vatican Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve Sixtine France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
85 points
Double blind. Ripe dark fruit bordering on raisiny with a bouillon undertone. There's a bit of peppery spice in there too. Plum, raisin, dark fruit and spice on the palate, which is relatively thin. Overly ripe. This had its fans, but it really didn't do anything for me. No guess.

Red
2011 Miner Family Cabernet Franc USA, California, Napa Valley
93 points
Double blind. Opens with a notes of dark fruit and cedar, giving way to berry, florals and sweet tobacco notes. Lush. Shows mixed red and black fruit, cherry and chocolate on the palate. Strong finish.
Red
2011 Paradigm Merlot USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
92 points
Double blind. OPens with a bit of a medicinal cherry note that fades away, leaving herb and dark plummy fruit notes. Plush on entry- velvety mouthfeel with medium tannins. Cherry, plum and dark fruit flavors on the long finish. Guessed merlot. 92-93 pts.

Red
2015 James Joseph Cabernet Franc Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley
92 points
Blind. Herbal red and dark fruit notes with underlying chocolate tones. The palate mirrors the bouquet. Well-balanced, with a lingering finish. There's an enjoyable plush texture to the wine. Excellent. I picked this as franc, but did not think it was our bottle of the JJ. 92+ pts.

Flight 5 - Reds (4 notes)

Red
2014 Shafer Merlot USA, California, Napa Valley
88 points
Blind. Aromas of dark fruit have a sour edge. Much better on the palate though, with plum, dark fruit and chocolate. A mere shadow of the bottle tasted at the winery a couple of weeks prior.

Red
2007 Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Part des Anges France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
83 points
Double blind. Wow. Ripe, way overdone raisiny fruit aromas, with a touch of bouillon and lavender. Dark fruit and raisined fruit on the palate. If there is another 2007 CndP in the lineup, this is it.
Red
2011 Domaine Roche-Audran Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
89 points
Aromas of red plum, cocoa nib, red and dark fruit and spice. Red fruit and pepper dominates the palate. Medium-bodied and balanced. Drinking quite nicely. Guessed syrah. 89+ pts.
Red
2002 Turley Charbono Tofanelli Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
92 points
Double blind, but when you see the collar you know it's a Turley. Lovely black fruit, a bit meaty, with a lovely floral undertone. Dark fruit on the palate. Very enjoyable. 92+ pts.

Flight 6 - Dinner/dessert wines (3 notes)

Nonblind, with dinner and dessert. We served prosciutto-wrapped pork tenderloins and a couple salads, with brown butter brownies for dessert.

Red
2013 Bedrock Wine Co. Zinfandel Old Vine USA, California
90 points
Nonblind with dinner. Dark fruit and raspberry notes. Raspberry, dark brambly fruit and pepper. Very nice. 90-91 pts.
Red
2017 Big Table Farm Pinot Noir Willamette Valley USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
90 points
Cherry and just a touch of earth. Nice fruit on the nose and palate. Balanced; good supporting acidity.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1997 Château Rieussec France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
90 points
Tropical fruits- pineapple and mango. Rich texture on the palate, heavier than I typically expect from Rieussec, with flavors of apricot and tropical fruit. 90-91 pts.
