Introduction

Langtons, presumably with the guidance of Andrew Caillard, decided to do a 'proper' Bordeaux tasting (think equivalent of the one that e.g. Berry Bros and Rudd do) with a number of wineries and showing current and a recent comparable vintage, in this case 2015.

Flight 1 (25 notes)

White
2015 Château Olivier Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Gooseberry, a little cream soda, jubey apple, sweet spice, a little cedar. Juicy but still tight, fresh an a little bitter on the finish. Hmm.

2018 Château Olivier Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
A similar apple fruit lozenge quality, pleasing with slight gooseberry. Juicy, tight, young but vibrantly fresh. I'm not sure what oak exposure will do to this though it's lovely at the moment.
Red
2015 Château Olivier France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Plums red fruit backed by slight blackcurrant and chocolate, creamy textured and rich, slightly grainy tannins, plums and chocolate. Polished.

Smells like it has more crunchy black fruit than the 2015, perhaps a higher cabernet quotient, there is also plums and a little spiced oak. Tightish tannins. Hmm.

2015 Château Cadet-Bon France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Medium minus intensity aromas of plums, chocolate, a bit of wet cardboard (?). Savoury, tight, gritty tannins, not much fruit. Nah.

2018 Château Cadet-Bon France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Earthy, pretty plums but, again, that slight cardboard note. Touches of wet stone as well. Spice, slightly savoury and bitter. Meh.
Red
2015 Château Yon-Figeac France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Biscuit, toast, plums, slight herbal top note, a little sour red currant,…loads of spice married to drying tannins, still very young. A little biscuit toast pushing through. Time and lots of it.
Red
2018 Château Yon-Figeac France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Plummy, rich, a little cedar, cream, milk chocolate. Spice, alcohol warmth, plummy with silky though drying tannins. Balanced in a slightly large way.
Red
2015 Clos Beauregard France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
A little savoury plum, earth, plain chocolate…in the mouth there is yeast extract and savoury bitter fruit - loads of extraction married to rainy tannins, Nah
Red
2018 Clos Beauregard France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Ooh, touch of VA…sour, muted fruit, over extracted fruit on the palate, Nah. Not for me.
Red
2015 Château Lascombes France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Low intensity aromas oddly enough - struggling to get much out of this, a little black and red fruit, biscuit. In the mouth it's juicy but, like the nose, very muted though a smidge of pretty fruit is showing through. It's not out of condition so I can't mark it as flaw but this is very 'quiet'.

Pretty, the merlot showing, some plum with red currant and blackcurrant underpin. Tight tannins dominate the juicy fresh fruits, polished cedar here as well. Nice

2015 Château Phélan Ségur France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
flawed

Medium minus intensity aromas of plums, blackcurrant, cedar. Fresh, lovely rich, really nice; tannins and fruit harmoniously balanced. Fantastic.

Young, blackcurrant, plums, slight earth, a little plasticine note. Again this is balanced through far tighter, still very young, black fruits and silky tannins though, good.

2015 Château Meyney France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Ripe blackcurrant, cedar, plenty of oak and slightly extracted plum. Tight tannins, alcohol warmth, black fruits, perhaps a little over done.

Pretty much a facsimile of the 2015 with the fruit more vibrant and there is a chocolate note, cream, again plenty of oak. Having said that it's oddly more approachable than the 2015. This is rather good…

2015 Château Grand-Puy Ducasse France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Blackcurrant, touch of cordial, biscuit, earth, cedar, juicy, fleshy but closed and tight tannins are drying, finishes with medium plus length. Hmm. Time.

Blackcurrant, cream, caramel, plummy, very fruit forward. Young, dense, tight, big tannins, feisty. Has promise.
Red
2015 Château Pontet-Canet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
<shrugs> smells roided. Monolithic. Ripe blackcurrant. Oak. Tight tannins. Juicy big black fruits. Long. Very long in fact. Obviously very good quality but not for quite a while.

Positively jammy sweet fruit, pretty though with a touch of spice. Over concentrated on the palate. Tight tannins. Time and lots of it.

2015 Château de Lamarque France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
Perfumed black fruits, touches of Ribena, red currant under this and slight spice. Juicy, savoury, tight, wet black fruit, chalky tannins close down the finish. Hmm.

Plumes, muted blackcurrant, slight spice. Juicy, dark hued fruit, a little spice, it's a bit closed down and, well, simple.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2015 Château Bastor-Lamontagne France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Cream, slight vanilla, apricot, slight lime and lemon marmalade. Juicy, freshy, apricot over confected lime and lemon, sweetly spiced, a little grip on the mid palate.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2018 Château Bastor-Lamontagne France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Medium minus intensity aromas of cream, apricot, spiced orange, a little marmalade, apple. It's a little sweet apple jam on the palate though. Disappointing after the nose. I would hope that time will help but I don't have enough experience of en primeur sauterne or barsac to make a call.

Closing

This was absolutely lovely experience, I was concerned that it was going to be a bun fight but it proved to be extremely pleasant. The wines were interesting as well. My lack of excitement with right bank wines continues based on this tasting, though. I thought, rather interestingly based on price, that the Phelan Segur and the Meyney (despite the latter's slight overwork) were the wines of the night.
