Flight 1 - Pre Party Lunch (2 notes)

White
2013 Domaine Ramonet Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Le Charmois France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru
89 points
Nicely floral start with mint and spice hints. Good weight and length with both apple and pear aromas and flavors. 1er Cru density. Opened up nicely with more time in glass. In its peak drinking window.
Red
1999 Hospices de Beaune Pommard Cuvée Billardet Méo-Camuzet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard
88 points
Maturing black fruit throughout, yet still nicely fresh for its ago.Slightly less powerful or ripe than I might expect from 1999, but good textures that show the best of Pommard character and meatiness without any rustic elements.

Flight 2 - Pre Party Whites (15 notes)

White - Sparkling
2004 Dom Pérignon Champagne France, Champagne
91 points
tasted blind. Bright orchard fruit with good weight and length, better textures, but less complex than this wine in the best vintages. Doubt there is a lot of upside.
White - Sparkling
1995 Taittinger Champagne Brut Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne France, Champagne
91 points
Tasted blind. Very rich , fat and powerful with maturing ripe fruit alongside bready, yeasty character. I thought this from 1990 given its maturity and ripeness. Good now.
White
2015 Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Derrière Chez Edouard France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru
89 points
Small glass, brief note. Lots of ripe apple to start, then leaner middle through finish with both apple and lemon. Ok weight, good now.
White
2012 Shafer Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
Tasted double blind. So evidently New World Chardonnay. So very oaky, but nicely rich at the same time. Over the top for me, so not my style.
White
2012 Kistler Chardonnay Kistler Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley
89 points
Tasted double blind. Also clearly New World Chardonnay, but with more restraint and balance than the Shafer. Good weight and near good balance.
White
2015 Wayfarer Chardonnay Wayfarer Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Fort Ross - Seaview
86 points
Tasted double blind. Ripe stone fruit comes across as fleshy, just slightly flat and missing brightness on finish. Good weight, jsut best to enjoy young.
White
2013 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Tasted double blind. Clearly white Burgundy with very good concentration and intensity, but also very obviously reductive. So I thought it likely PYCM. So much orchard fruit, just brooding now due to reduction. Probably would have been very exciting if given an hour+ of air.
White
2011 Pierre Morey Meursault Les Tessons France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
89 points
Served double blind to the tasting group alongside the 1996. Bright lemon and green apple with good+ weight and still a slightly tart finish. Good now, but probably still upside from here.
White
1996 Pierre Morey Meursault Les Tessons France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
91 points
Served double blind to the tasting group alongside the 2011. Shockingly fresh. Toasted hazelnut and almond butter with baked apple. Classic Meursault for me. Very good weight, good length. Still wonderful when revisited an hour after opened. My 2nd to last bottle from a case purchased near release, this was the best from the past few years.
White
2007 Domaine Leroy Bourgogne-Aligoté France, Burgundy, Bourgogne-Aligoté
flawed
Just not really pleasant. I thought there both some Volatile Acidity as well as significant notes of reduction.
White
2007 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
flawed
Badly oxidized. Some times this wine freshens up with air, but not in this case.
White
2013 Domaine Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Ruchottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
92 points
Tasted double blind. Lemon and apple with good weight and brightness and a beeswax character I really liked on long finish. Correctly identified as Chassagne, then also Ramonet, but I thought it from 2014.
White
2004 Château Pape Clément Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
88 points
Tasted double blind. Grassy and lemony, I immediately thought Sauv Blanc from Bordeaux. Seemed to be getting tired with ok weight and depth. OK overall, but slightly disappointing when unveiled.
White
2001 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Réserve France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
91 points
Tasted double blind. Lush peach and apple with nuance and intriguing complexity. Lush, yet restrained. I thought this Northern Rhone. Very good now.
White
2015 E. Guigal Condrieu La Doriane France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
93 points
Tasted double blind. Tropical, rich and unctuous with enough brightness, energy and acidity most notably on its long finish. I went directly to Condrieu for this.

Flight 3 - Party Wines (12 notes)

Notes written from memory the following day.

Red
1976 Château Lascombes France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
91 points
Magnum. Small glass, brief note from memory. Lots of mature black fruit with earthy, meaty spice. Very good weight and length. I'm sure the large format helps a lot here.
Red
1990 Château Pape Clément France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
91 points
Small glass, brief note from memory. Good richness with enticing combination of ripe black plum, sweet spice and cassis. Very good weight, starting to lose freshness.
Red
2005 Château Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Small glass, brief note from memory. So much good stuff here, just little or no pleasure coming through right now.
Red
1996 Château Canon-la-Gaffelière France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
87 points
Small glass, brief note from memory. Slightly simple black fruit with as much earth as fruit. Good length, good now but I doubt there is upside.
Red
2016 Andremily Syrah No. 5 USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County
Small glass, brief note from memory. I understand why some people enjoy this wine, but to me this comes across as a hot mess, particularly in contrast to the charming SQN Stein tasted immediately before.

Red
2012 Sine Qua Non Grenache Stein USA, California, Central Coast
94 points
Small glass, brief note from memory. Lots of ripe black plum and cherry with sweet spice. Very good depth, easily maintaining grace and balance despite its heft. Very surprisingly, my first time tasting Stein. Very good now with possible upside.

Rosé
2017 Domaine de Triennes Rosé France, Provence, Mediterranée
86 points
Small glass, brief note from memory. Some berry and apple with good brightness and balance. Very fun.
Red
2010 Arietta Variation One USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Small glass, brief note from memory. Merlot coming through nicely in forward fruit and round textures, Syrah in spice and meatiness. Good balance, good weight. Overall enjoyable now.
Red
2005 Viña Almaviva S.A. Almaviva Chile, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto
92 points
Small glass, brief note from memory. Black currant, cassis, roasted meat with subtle spice and very good concentration and freshness. Very good now.
Red
2005 Colgin IX Estate USA, California, Napa Valley
93 points
Small glass, brief note from memory. Black plum, cassis, dark chocolate and licorice that is still just hinting at its full potential.

Red
1998 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Valbuena 5° Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
92 points
Black and red cherry throughout with espresso, tobacco and roasted meat hints. Very good balance and length with a bright elegance. Might still have upside form here.
