Envy Wines

Introduction

Note that these were all bottled recently and most tasted like they needed a bit more time. Thanks for Mark Carter for this fabulous lineup.

Flight 1 (8 notes)

Red
2017 Carter Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Fortuna Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
91 points
Notes of red cherries, spice box and soil on the nose. This is lighter bodied than previous editions and rides quite a bit higher on the palate. It's still searching for its zen, perhaps because it was recently bottled. The concentration is lacking a bit and there is some astringency. Hopefully a little time in bottle will allow this to come together.
Red
2017 Carter Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Weitz Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
92 points
In a somewhat similar manner as the Fortuna, the Weitz is still searching for its stride. I assume much of that has to do with the recent bottling. Compared with the other Carter wines, this is showing a lot of chargrill and earthy notions to go along with some big time unresolved fruit. It is also riding a bit higher on the palate than recent vintages, with a more muted finish. Give it some time.
Red
2017 Carter Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon La Bam Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
93 points
As per usual, this is a more linear expression of the LPV site when compared with Verdad. The fruit seems a bit redder and more acidic than 2015/2016. There is a solid frame supporting flavors of red cherry, cassis, tilled soil and tobacco. More medium than full bodied this time around, the alcohol still needs to resolve and like many of these 2017's, it needs some time in bottle. Look for this to show better in another 6 months. 93+
Red
2017 Carter Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon La Verdad Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
95 points
Follows with the other Carter wines as being a bit higher toned this year, but the Verdad is rounder, more seamless and has better concentration than many of the others. The fruit is redder, showing more black cherry than in previous vintages. The alcohol needs to resolve quite a bit, but there's no doubting its ripe and sexy style. As per usual, the LPV character comes through, with lots of gravelly and earth driven flavors to accompany the blue and red fruit. There's some bitterness toward the mid palate and finish that will hopefully subside with a little time. This has a lot of promise. 95+
Red
2017 Carter Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon The Grand Daddy Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
This is super primary and unresolved, making it hard to get a good handle on at the moment. The thinnest and least expressive of the BTK offerings. The fruit is there but I wasn't able to get a much from it and perhaps it is just shut down after being bottled so recently. Decided not to rate.

2017 Carter Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon The O.G. Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
95 points
This and the GTO were my overall favorites in this tasting. While this isn't going to be as epic as the 2016 version of this wine, it is the most put together and shows the best concentration of the SVD's. Blueberries, cassis fruit, red cherries and spice box highlight an excellent nose. Nice layered blue and red fruit (perhaps slightly underripe) , this shows good depth on the mid palate, really fine tannins and a solid if really bitter finish at the moment. Lots and lots of alcohol to work through and a bit concerned about notes of unripe fruit. Rides higher than previous vintages. The most complex of the BTK offerings. This should get better...and let's hope so. Right now not close to 2012-2016 vintages. 95 based on upside. Probably 93-94 currently.

Red
2017 Carter Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon The G.T.O Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
95 points
This is perhaps a tick better than the OG, but shows a very similar profile. The sum of its parts here make for a nicely composed wine, with good depth, fine grained tannins, plush fruit and a deeper mid pallet than the rest. Like all these wines, there is a lot of black cherry to go along with cassis, blueberries, spice box and dusty earth. The redder fruit dominates, with excellent layering and focus. The finish is relatively long and the most composed of the group. This will get better. 95+

Red
2017 Carter Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Three Kings Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
94 points
The 3K is a bit all over the place at the moment, but there's a lot of upside here. As with basically all of the wines this vintage, it rides a bit higher on the palate, shows more red fruit and is a bit less concentrated and deep than the previous few epic years. Lots of alcohol to work out. Black cherries, red currant and white flowers. Good energy. Fairly round, with nice tannin quality, it finishes a bit bitter and needs time (which is clearly the theme here).
