Chez Herb Wollowick

Introduction

Herb and his wife organized this dinner around an offer from his friend Eric to bring a few special bottles. Lovely dinner party that included Amy and Warren, Irene and Herb’s daughter.

Flight 1 - Aperitifs (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
2010 Leclerc Briant Champagne Millésime Extra Brut France, Champagne
Quick taste - seemed nice with a slight oxidation note for complexity
White
2016 Domaine Francois et Antoine Jobard Meursault En La Barre France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
A pretty young Meursault with admirable depth.

Flight 2 - 1990 showcase (4 notes)

All bottles were opened at noon, decanted at 3 and served at 6:30. Initially with pasta all’amitriciana that was too spicy for the wine. Later, and much better with, venison rib chops with currant stock reduction and hanger steak with Demi-glace

Red
1990 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
About 12 years since I last tasted this and described it as big, brooding but with a bright future. This bottle confirmed, the future has arrived. In many respects, I consider this classic Médoc. Managed well in the lofty company it kept this night.
Red
1990 Château Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
The most stylish of the 1st growths tonight. For much of the time, it displayed too much oak for my taste - though I did relish the silky, lush texture it imparted. Later, it’s flavors became ashy as many maturing bottles can be. Others liked it more than me but very nice overall.
Red
1990 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
I imagine if I doled out points for wines, I would have been tempted to issue something near perfection here. The structure, individual components all were immensely impressive...and the wine appears to be merely in early adolescence, seemingly capable of living forever. Yet, tonight, my quibble was a lack of enough distinct personality. The Lafite has more soul.

1990 Château Lafite Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
At no point during the evening did this evoke a comment of “the best” or “my favorite”, but at the end a few folks agreed with me that this bottle had the most soul of the 3 first Growths we drank from this vintage.

Flight 3 - After dinner (2 notes)

Jasnières was great with fourme d’ambert.

Red
2011 Azienda Agricola Caparsa Chianti Classico Caparsino Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
Asking a lot after 3 1990 1st Growths but more than held its own.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1997 Domaine Gigou Jasnières Selection de Raisins Nobles France, Loire Valley, Jasnières
After dinner with Fourme d’Amnert. Lovely bottle
