WX Dinner

Tasted June 29, 2019 by Satoshi Nakamoto with 404 views

Introduction

A night of epic proportions as bucket list wines were being freely poured by the most generous wine collectors around. I was too caught up in the moment to be bothered with taking formal tasting notes, so I will score everything based off impressions alone.

There were far more bottles than my notes cover (at least 3-5x the amount), but here's what I got.

Flight 1 - Champagne Starters (13 notes)

White - Sparkling
2008 Dom Pérignon Champagne France, Champagne
94 points
This 2008 Dom really stood out among a sea of Champagnes. Unbelievably ready to drink, yet so complex and nuanced to where you're taken aback by its brilliance. The only thing better was the 2008 Cristal, but at that price, I'd rather buy more Dom.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée France, Champagne
93 points
Magnum format.
White - Sparkling
2002 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
93 points
Far more lemon and precision notes than the MV Krugs at the table. Is it worth the extra tariff? That's a matter of preference.
White - Sparkling
2002 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill France, Champagne
95 points
When Pol Roger WS is on, there's almost no topping it. I enjoyed this far more than all the Krugs and Doms at the table. More expansive, better texture, and so much more exciting. Wish I had cases of these.
White - Sparkling
2008 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut France, Champagne
95 points
The 2008 completely eclipsed the 2006 bottle and was even more impressive than the aged 97. This bottle is a stunner. Got tons of capital to spend on great wine? Look no further. This is it. The hype is real.

This is the Champagne to get. There is no close second.

Flight 2 - White Wines (10 notes)

White
2016 Weingut Keller Abts E® Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Rheinhessen
95 points
My favorite white wine of the evening. Damn, why does Keller have to be so amazing and why do Riesling have to be so good? Freaking incredible!
White - Sweet/Dessert
1997 Domaine Huet Vouvray Cuvée Constance France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
flawed
Oxidized
White - Sweet/Dessert
1983 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
91 points
Dense, unctuous, tropical. Lacked acidity. Tough vintage for Sauternes, but an absolute treat to drink a d'Yquem at this age.
White
2014 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs Gains France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
92 points
White
2013 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
White
2014 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault 1er Cru Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
93 points
White
2014 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
94 points
White
2015 Edmond Vatan Sancerre Clos la Néore France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
95 points
While most people were going at the white Burgs and bubbles, @rickym13 pointed out the absolutely brilliant Sancerre at the corner that nobody was touching. I took his advice, drank some, and MAN, this wine is absolutely special. Could be first time charm, but I preferred it over the Burgs. Excellent!
White - Sparkling
2014 Savart Champagne Premier Cru Le Mont Benoit France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
91 points
White
2000 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Les Forêts France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
93 points

2008 Thierry Allemand Cornas Reynard France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
97 points
In a sea of world class red wines, the '08 Reynard stood head and shoulders above everything else. This wine was completely in the zone and was the most memorable bottle of the night.

Divine. I'm drooling just thinking about it. How fitting that it was brought by LA's favorite @hungry.md (his Instagram handle).
