Flight 1 (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
1995 Dom Pérignon Champagne Oenothèque France, Champagne
95 points
Six years on from my last encounter with this, but just as assured and rounded. Assured without any cockiness, and very comfortable in itself. Rich, rounded, harmonious, but without the frisson if tensile energy that the 98 showed earlier in the week. Absolutely à point.*****
White - Sparkling
2002 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill France, Champagne
93 points
Very vinous. Broad and full. Quite meaty with a touch of red apple. Similar to last showing, far more poised and together than straighT 02 Pol, but broad in a muscular rather than flabby way. Personally I’d prefer just a little more elegance though there was certainly lots of complexity and interest. ****

Flight 2 (2 notes)

White
2009 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Vide Bourse France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
94 points
Pale straw, still a slight green tint. Classic PY nose, richness and poise and cut combined. Lithe but serious on the palate, elegance and mineral bite against a sense of inner power. Super balance, just lovely. ****1/2
White
2009 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
92 points
Pale straw, just a touch more intense than the VB. Richer, more padding on the mid palate, but less finesse and line. A little more of a crowd pleaser. Broader. Good core here, but being picky just a little lumpy in the company. ****

Flight 3 (3 notes)

Red
1966 Château Palmer France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
91 points
Opened, but inadvertently oven 90 mins in a decanter. Not nearly as rich as the immediately previous bottle of this a couple of years ago. Nicely vegetal and savoury when it reaches the glass, almost burgundian sous-bois with a touch of the old Rioja. Lovely match with the truffle. Silky, harmonious, moderate length, a good rather than great bottle of this. ****
Red
1989 Domaine de Chevalier France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
93 points
Mellow, a touch of richness. Quite brighT butWiTh a touch of structure. Richness but structure. Good balance around a still firm spine. Mellow tobacco, warm pebbles and a touch of liquorice. ****
Red
1985 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
94 points
Similar to a bottle from the same case a few years back. Napa sweetness tempered by a classical frame. Restrained, elegant, but a hint or two of fun. Very rounded, smooth and complete. Lovely. ****1/2

Flight 4 (1 note)

Red
2011 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
90 points
Dense cherry to deepest ruby. Initially a lovely bright cherry nose, developing to something just a little more savoury. Densely silky. New Gouges, but tightening and starting to clam up. Sinewy, dry but fine tannin frame takes over and starts to squeeze the fruit; consequently lacks expansiveness and length on the finish. Lots of potential, but not singing on the day, for me at least. ***1/2 for now, but probably **(**)
