Flight 1 (36 notes)

White - Sparkling
2008 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill France, Champagne
94 points
Small glass, brief note. Perhaps it was the hot weather, but this really hit the spot. Bright and finessed start-to-finish with savory and sweet apple and pear. Great length. So bright.
White
1989 Domaine Joseph Voillot Meursault 1er Cru Les Cras France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Small glass, brief note. Bright and fresh for its age with plenty of apple on nose and palate. Good weight, better length.
White
1979 Ropiteau Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
91 points
Small glass, brief note. Old school style, very dense, almost meaty. Certainly completely mature but the power and substance keeps everything very interesting.
White
2008 François Lumpp Givry 1er Cru Petit Marole Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Givry 1er Cru
Small glass, brief note. Still fresh, very enjoyable combination of apple with emerging earth.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Delamotte Champagne Brut France, Champagne
89 points
Small glass, brief note. From 6L bottle from the producer, made from 2010/ 2011 vintages. Apple and pear with lots of toasted brioche. Very good textures with a long, evolving finish that is still bright and energetic.
White
2006 Domaine Jean Chartron Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos du Cailleret France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Small glass, brief note. Certainly mature, but with very good density. More advanced than I'd prefer, but the concentration keeps it somewhat interesting.
White
2007 Domaine Jacques Prieur Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
89 points
Small glass, brief note. Charming aromas, simple flavors. Good+ weight.
White
2001 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montmains France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
91 points
Rich and charming combination of fresh and poached pear. If blind, would have thought several years younger given its brightness. Good weight, better length wit an unfolding and complex finish.
Red
1989 Domaine Madame De Loisy Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. From magnum. Slightly dirty, also firm (especially for the 1989 vintage). Fully mature, but enjoyable for those of us who like very old school styled wines.
White
1991 Domaine Michel Voarick Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Good weight and depth but with a slightly bitter finish that didn't thrill me.
Red
1989 Georges Chicotot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
90 points
Small glass, brief note. Mature and a bit musty/ dirty aromas. Fresher, cleaner and more robust flavors with rich black cherry and spice hints. Good weight. Very tasty.
Red
1978 Louis Jadot Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
flawed
I had purchased this is Beaune one year ago in great condition (2 cm ullage) and stored it well there since. But old bottles are frail and somehow the cork had mostly fallen into the bottle and ullage by tonight was terrible (7 cm?) and while the wine was perhaps interesting and drinkable, it was really mostly oxidized.
Red
1969 Remoissenet Père et Fils Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
flawed
David was right. There are few good things that came from 1969. Madeirized.
Red
2013 Alex Gambal Vosne-Romanée Glow France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
Apparently a wine Alex made for some friends or associates (perhaps a fan of women's wrestling?). In 3L. Pleasant but nothing particularly noteworthy, and not distinct as from Vosne-Romanee. But an interesting label.
Red
2012 Domaine Tollot-Beaut Chorey-les-Beaune France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chorey-les-Beaune
87 points
Small glass, brief note. Sweet red cherry with good weight for its level. Certainly good for its level, enjoyable now.
White
2011 Louis Jadot Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
Lots of yellow and green apple with beeswax and mint notes. Comes across as ripe without particular heaviness, yet demonstrates weight with clear elegance and finesse. My first time trying this wine, it is a big success for the vintage.

White
2007 Chanson Père & Fils Corton-Vergennes Domaine Des Héritiers P.Chanson France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. rich and concentrated but clearly more advanced than it should be at this stage.
White
2008 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
90 points
Small glass, brief note. Bright yellow and green apple with great textures, showcasing the minerally aspects of Chassagne perfectly. Precise, energetic finish with good length.
White
2011 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
95 points
Small glass, brief note.So incredibly rich and unctuous with heading turning aromas, flavors and power. Middle and finish show so much sweet and savory spice, making this even more intriguing and complex. Not the most structured of wines, so while this wine thrills me now, I'd err on drinking it now vs 5 years from now.
Red
1947 Pierre Ponnelle Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
94 points
Small glass, brief note. Bottle in great condition.Ripe red and black fruit, fully mature but complex spice notes throughout. Keeps going with sneaky great length and textures. Was this Roumier Musigny?
Red
1964 Remoissenet Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Chevaliers de L'Arquebuse France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
89 points
Small glass, brief note.Lots of mature red cherry and earth. Still very alive, even if not as complex as the best older Burgundy that have made it this long, but very balanced and enjoyable.
Red
1969 Nicolas Chambolle-Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
90 points
Small glass, brief note. Fully mature red cherry, comes across as ripe and well structured, providing support for the lingering fruit. Elegant textures on finish. Wow for its level.
Red
1988 Joseph Drouhin Grands-Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Rustic character with better flavors than aromas, overall still a bit too firm. Similar to another bottle from a year or two ago, I enjoyed this much more when younger and the fruit more vibrant.
Red
1976 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Clos de la Mousse France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Small glass, brief note. Ripe red cherry and berry with lots of mature notes. Ripeness gives this a level of simplicity and less complexity vs better vintages. Good now.
Red
2014 Domaine Dominique Mugneret Echezeaux En Orveaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
89 points
Small glass, brief note. Very enjoyable with bright red fruit, just less density or nuance than I expect from Grand Cru in a good vintage. Maybe too young?
Red
1937 Maison Leroy Corton France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
94 points
Small glass, brief note. More red fruit than a wine at this age can be expected to provide, with as much red cherry as earth and mushroom and slightly sweet spice. Near perfect balance and a long, elegant finish. I will admit that I wanted to like this, which probably helped, but I really thought it amazing and exciting.
Red
2013 Cecile Tremblay Bourgogne La Croix Blanche France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
88 points
Small glass, brief note. Pretty red berry and cherry aromas are vibrant and inviting. Similar flavors are fun, but slightly less exciting. Very good Bourgogne, best now through the next few years.
Red
1989 Château du Moulin-a-Vent Moulin-à-Vent France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Moulin-à-Vent
88 points
Late night, small glass, brief note. From magnum. Ripe and slightly musty, slightly dirty, but good grip and length with plenty of ripe fruit still front-and-center.
Red
1990 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
93 points
From magnum. Ripe red cherry and berry coming across as so rich and fresh. Still so young in this format from this source (Wilson Daniels in Burgundy, so....) that I think it barely showing a fraction of its potential. Others didn't like as much for that exact same reason, but I'm completely confident in this wine.
Red
1953 Maison Leroy La Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Romanée Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Fully mature red fruit with a spicebox full of complexity from start-to-finis with slowly cooked mushroom notes adding more nuance and umami. Most likely one of the rare authentic bottles of this wine, given the number of fakes out there. Very good+, near great, and such a thrill to taste this once again.
Red
1969 Ph. M. Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
90 points
Charmes-Chambertin from 1969 from a negociant in Macon who called himself “Ph. M.” Phillipe M? Regardless, the wine (great 1.5 cm fill, great color) was so classically Gevrey with fully mature black plum and cherry, roasted meat and slowly cooked mushrooms. Good+ depth and weight. Altogether well balanced.
Red
2011 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Champans France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
88 points
Small glass, brief note. Red cherry with spice and floral flourishes. Good+ weight, good length, but slightly bitter/ green notes on finish.
Red
2002 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
95 points
Small glass, brief note. Also from magnum from WD. Cornucopia of rich and ripe red fruits on nose and palate with equally diverse sweet and savory spice. So much here, a bit backward right now, but with an explosive finish.
Red
1998 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brulées France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. A wine I adored for many years, but my last three bottles tasted over the past five years all seemed flawed/ corked. Not tonight's! Charming red fruits with sweet spice that is prototypically Vosne with unfolding and elegant layers on long finish.
Red
1966 Bégin Colnet Volnay France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay
90 points
Small glass, brief note. "Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin" bottling. Charming spice with fully mature red fruit in front of the earth notes. Fully engaging with a long, slightly sweet finish.
Red
1985 Domaine des Varoilles Gevrey-Chambertin Clos du Couvent France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
89 points
Late night, small glass, brief note. All black fruit with roasted game hints. Shocking fresh for Villages at this age and impressive density I would have thought from 1er Cru.
