Flight 1 (24 notes)

Red
2017 Domaine Huber-Verdereau Volnay 1er Cru Les Fremiets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Bright and fresh red cherry with some faint earth hints. Faintly firm middle but good balance and good overall, 88-89 point potential.
Red
2015 Domaine Génot-Boulanger Volnay 1er Cru Les Roncerets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Ripe red cherry with delicate sweet spice, showcasing both Volnay and the vintage nicely. Rich finish, 90-91 point potential.
Red
2012 Domaine Génot-Boulanger Volnay 1er Cru Les Roncerets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
88 points
Tasting, brief note. More tannic vs 2015 with a backward character, even a little more "old school," but with the same fruit purity.
Red
2017 Domaine du Chateau de Meursault Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
88 points
Tasting, brief note. Bright red cherry with medium weight and very good balance. Subtle Volnay perfume to start and savory spice on finish. Good young.
Red
2016 Domaine du Chateau de Meursault Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
90 points
Tasting, brief note. Vintage concentration really coming through front-and-center, more so than Volnay elegance. Lots of fruit, but everything is in good balance, so I think terroir will come through, but best to cellar 2026-. My favorite of the vertical.

2015 Domaine du Chateau de Meursault Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
90 points
Tasting, brief note. Lots of both black and red cherry with both sweet and savory spice. Power and weight. Very tasty, but least classic "Volnay" of the vertical.

2014 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
93 points
Tasting, brief note. So much red cherry here that is almost comes across as fun and near simple, but there is so much spice and textural charm waiting in the near background. Way to young for optimal pleasure, but a very impressive Volnay.

Red
2009 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Champans France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
91 points
Tasting, brief note. Ripe red and black berries with a slightly jammy character that still requires patience. I thought this would drink better young when tasted from barrel, but I got that wrong. I like where this is going, but the route is taking longer to get there.
Red
2015 Bouchard Père et Fils Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Unusually more black cherry than red fruit, but classic Volnay spice, anise and floral character are front-and-center. Vintage ripeness is clear, along with fairly assertive tannins, but this is powerful and impressively long. 91-92+ point potential.
Red
2015 Faiveley Volnay 1er Cru Les Fremiets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
90 points
Tasting, brief note. Very big and robust, very "2015" with lots of sweet black and red cherry. More tannic notes than typical for Volnay, but certainly fun already now nonetheless.
Red
2015 Faiveley Volnay 1er Cru Santenots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
91 points
Tasting, brief note. For me, this is a step up from Fremiets just tasted. A little more fleshy and flashy, but softer structure. So I both like the potential as well as how fun it tastes today.
Red
2017 Nicolas Rossignol Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Angles France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
90 points
Tasting, brief note. Elegant red fruit throughout with some black cherry notes on the very finish. Very balanced already now with a bright finish. 90+ point potential.
Red
2017 Nicolas Rossignol Volnay 1er Cru Les Chevrets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
90 points
Tasting, brief note. More dense and firm vs Clos des Angles. Bigger and more powerful with good density, while still fresh. But this will require some cellar time to balance, 90+ point potential, 2025-.
Red
2017 Nicolas Rossignol Volnay 1er Cru Santenots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
91 points
Tasting, brief note. A faint note of reduction is barely distracting here. Fleshy and ripe red cherry with sweet spice in a very harmonious combination already now, with good+ length and weight. 91+ point potential, good now, but decant.
Red
2010 Louis Latour Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
90 points
Tasting, brief note. Bit of reduction to start, so this isn't forthcoming to start. Lots of density with complex fruit and spice notes, even if not overtly fun right today. Very good 90+ point potential, but cellar longer and/or decant.
Red
2012 Louis Latour Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
87 points
Tasting, brief note. Rich fruit, like the 2012, but also burly and less exciting.
Red
2014 Louis Latour Volnay 1er Cru En Chevret France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
87 points
Tasting, brief note. Slightly reduced, certainly backward and more certainly rugged and austere for Volnay. Yet there is plenty of good fruit plus spice notes. Needs plenty of time to integrate.
Red
2017 Domaine de Montille Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
90 points
Tasting, brief note. Pretty red cherry and berry with moderate weight, better length. Nicely spiced finish. Fully accessible now.
Red
2005 Domaine de Montille Volnay 1er Cru Champans France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. So much here in terms of fruit and structure, but today the structure is very firm and more pronounced.
Red
2013 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Château des Ducs France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
90 points
Tasting, brief note. Subtle spice to start with bright red cherry, then spice intensifying middle through finish. Moderate weight, good balance in an elegant style. I'd give this at least another year or three in the cellar, then enjoy through the next few decades.
Red
2011 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Also on the lean side and seemingly nearly shut down. I would have thought this would be more accessible now, but perhaps the hot weather is particularly throwing off this lighter styled wine.
Red
2015 Domaine Jacques Prieur Volnay 1er Cru Santenots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
89 points
Tasting, brief note. Red and black cherry throughout, all ripe and sweet with good power. Less classic for Volnay, but fun already now with the ability to age and evolve.
Red
2016 Domaine Jacques Prieur Volnay 1er Cru Santenots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
90 points
Tasting, brief note. Much more classic vs 2015 with more perfume and textural charm, yet still with as good weight and even better length.

2016 Domaine Jacques Prieur Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Santenots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
91 points
Tasting, brief note. A step up over the other Santenots cuvee with bigger and richer character, while also retaining brightness and Volnay character.
