Y. Clerget Cellar Visit and Tasting

Pommard

Introduction

Tasting with Thibaud Clerget. I didn't realize that his first vintage was just 2015, so there is considerable momentum towards making very good wine after 5 years of selling the grapes to a well known Boillot. Thibaud's father made wine in a very different, very "old school" style through 2009, based on the older wines we were served blind at the end of the tasting. Note:2018 harvest started on August 28th in Volnay!

Flight 1 (12 notes)

White
2018 Domaine Y. Clerget Meursault Chevalières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
Barrel tasting at the domaine. Apple, almond butter, lemongrass with lemon peel hints. Good weight and balance with a fat start, then brighter finish. Very good for its level.
Red
2018 Domaine Y. Clerget Volnay France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay
Barrel tasting at the domaine. From two parcels just below Champans, averaging 45 yo vines. Black and red cherry with good ripeness that dominates, making this a fun but slightly one-dimensional wine. This doesn't quite live up to how much I really enjoyed this wine from both 2015 and 2016, but I never tasted those from barrel, so judgment reserved.
Red
2018 Domaine Y. Clerget Volnay 1er Cru Carelle Sous la Chapelle France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine. Charming floral and spice driven start with an array of red fruit flavors and aromas. Slightly light for the vintage, but clearly elegant and classically Volnay with good length. Another wine I look forward to trying again in bottle.
Red
2018 Domaine Y. Clerget Volnay 1er Cru Champans France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine. One barrel made (new oak, which will take some time to resolve). 50% whole cluster. Both red and black berries come through on nose, then more red on palate. Lots of sweet spice, partly influenced by the new oak.Very good volume and richness here. Intriguing 89-92 point potential, based on how this integrates.
Red
2018 Domaine Y. Clerget Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Verseuil France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine. From 0.5 ha (12 barrels) monopole below Pousse d'Or. Rich and clearly opulent, but good restraining tannins are there to provide structure and offsetting balance. Also enough acidity and mineral textures. Tough to assess how/ where this wine will come together but there is a lot of great stuff here. Broad 89-92 point potential.
Red
2018 Domaine Y. Clerget Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine. Just 5 barrels, 20 ha/hl with very good old vine concentration. Slightly floral and spice withe bright red cherry that is also clearly ripe. Very bright, engaging textures through long+ finish. Certainly my favorite of the lineup both for interest today and being cellarworthy, 90-92+ point potential.

2018 Domaine Y. Clerget Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine. From Rugiens Bas. 20% new oak, 20% whole cluster. Cross-section of red fruits with some black cherry on finish. Clearly the power of top Pommard comes through in the middle, but this also manages to bring out an elegance from the fruit, coming across as more elegant than fat. Well done. Cellar at least five years.

2018 Domaine Y. Clerget Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine. 50% whole cluster with two new barrels (out of 5 total). From Grand Maupertui, just near Anne Gros. Charming nose implies so much goodness, but an austere palate today. Impossible for me to assess or project, but I am optimistic.

2017 Domaine Y. Clerget Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Verseuil France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Tasting at the domaine. Bottle had been opened the day before. Bright red cherry on nose and palate with medium weight, good balance and length. Very charming. Will drink well young.

90 points
Tasting at the domaine. Bottle had been opened the day before. 50% whole cluster. Fresh red cherry and berry with good spicebox support. Bright and elegant with good weight, better balance and length. Well done, taking advantage of the vintage strengths without over-extracting more than 2017 gave.

1996 Domaine Y. Clerget Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Popped and poured, served to us blind at the end of the tasting. Clearly older, seemingly from a less ripe vintage (I was thinking 1993 Volnay 1er). Massive structure dominates, slightly coarse, and very old school in every sense, including being just a hint too dirty. I was shocked to see this from 1996.

1999 Domaine Y. Clerget Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
87 points
A second wine popped-and-poured, and served blind. This also seemed old, but this time from a riper vintage with fully mature fruit that is still firmly structured. With limited reference for old Clerget, I thought this was from 1990. Wine has good density and weight, but is clearly getting tired.
