Tasting at Alejandro Bulgheroni Estate

St Helena near Meadowood

Introduction

This is a new project sourcing most of their grapes from the famed Beckstoffer To Kalon, Dr Crane and Las Piedras sites. Philippe Melka is the the winemaker. For those of us who love valley floor wines, this sets up to be very compelling on those two fronts alone. The winery sits on a site towards the northeastern end of St Helena that used to be owned by Harlan. Lots of growth plans in the works, but already a nice facility. Michael Ploetz is the wine director and a quality guy.

This was my favorite wine of the AB tasting, which is saying something because I thought many were spectacular. Stunning purple in the glass, showing super pure and gorgeous violets, ripe black cherry, cassis, chocolate, wet stone, herbal notes and hints of tobacco. On the palate, a perfect silky mouthfeel frames opulent mostly blue fruit that cascades over the pallet in wonderful waves of flavor. True to the site, this also has excellent mineral driven notes and shows a nice sturdy backbone and fine grained tannins. The finish is long a absolutely satisfying. This is ready to compete with the top tier of Dr Crane producers.

This is a show stopper. Creme de cassis, blueberry preserves, spice box and white flowers jump out of the glass with an unreal rich and expressive aroma. It explodes on the palate with enormous pure, opulent and majestic deep blue and black fruit that builds like a locomotive as it moves from the front to the back of your mouth. At the same time, it stays virtually weightless and elegant, showing off perfect tannin management and superior texture and balance. As you might expect, it shows a bit less minerality than the Dr Crane or LPV wines, but it makes up for it in absolute purity of the most amazing fruit. More structure and freshness than 2015. Finishes super long and right on point. Another absolute winner. 97+++

Notes of blueberry preserves, creme de cassis, spice box and earthy dust make up a lovely rich nose. Super powerful black and blue fruit swim across the palate with outrageous levels of concentration and depth of flavor. All the goodness of the BTK site is reflected here, with a superior mouthfeel and exceptional tannin integration. Despite the huge fruit and crazy concentration that is reflective of the vintage, this shows restraint before heading over the edge and manages to find balance. Lots of spice and underlying herbal elements that will likely emerge more over time. Long, ripe and plush finish.

Soaring notes of blueberries, crushed rock, embers and scorched earth on the nose. Dark purple in the glass, this is full bodied and packed with concentrated black and blue fruit. Shows deep gravely mineral driven character and it needs a little more time to unwind itself fully - a bit of those young chalky elements at present. Nevertheless, this shows excellent potential with rich pure fruit, nice mouthfeel, a firm backbone and long finish. I'd give it a few more years in bottle to really come into its own.

Violets, cedar, cassis, tobacco and hints of menthol on the nose. Nicely full bodied and showing excellent complexity with interplays of black/blue fruit, earthy elements and deep mineral driven flavors. Nicely structured, especially for the vintage, this is entering a good drinking window for those that appreciate having some fruit to go along with the tertiary characteristics. It had a bit of green to it, which for me knocked it down slightly. It also likely suffered next to the 2016, which was showing very, very well and is just a better vintage in general.

This is the estate wine, which is a blend of the best juice from all their vineyards. A real show stopper, with lavish notes of blueberry pie, dark cherries, cedar, tobacco and herbs. Plush yet firm on the pallet, this shows mostly red and blue super concentrated and fresh fruit backed by a really firm structure and grainy tannins. Likely built to age a bit more so than the Beckstoffer SVD's, this goes a tick higher on complexity while giving up a small amount of the decadence. The mid pallet shows lots of earthy elements and the finish is super long and lasting.
