Introduction

Monthly grand tasting - Italian wines

Flight 1 - The Po Valley (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Ca' del Bosco Franciacorta Cuvée Prestige Brut Italy, Lombardia, Franciacorta DOCG
91 points
Nose was pretty mild, but there definitely is a hint of bread and yeast. Fine, soft beads. Lemon, bread yeast, and a plume of elderflowers. Quite enjoyable
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Paltrinieri Lambrusco di Sorbara Radice Italy, Emilia-Romagna, Lambrusco di Sorbara DOC
89 points
Pale rosy orange, and a broad nose of summer fruits and menthol. Lots of dried florals, grass and brine on the palate, and somewhat heaty

Flight 2 - Tre Venezie (6 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Nino Franco Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore Rustico Italy, Veneto, Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG
89 points
Strong lemon flowers on the nose, and some lemon, peach, and a bit of straw on the palate
Orange
2010 Gravner Ribolla Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Venezia Giulia IGT
89 points
So... an orange wine... clearly some sweet tangerine and honey. Somewhat orange, with a bit of caramel on palate, but still dry
Red
2016 Franz Haas Pinot Nero Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Alto Adige - Südtirol
93 points
Good acids, and a cool minty nose with cherries. Some good flavours of red cherry, bread and grass. Nice!
Red
2006 Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
93 points
Intense and raisinny, and some sweetness, and secodary but still well balanced by the high acids, which lifts the wine. Also with cherries, cassis, and mint

Red
2010 Fattoria Garbole Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva Hatteso Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella
92 points
Intensely sweet and raisinny, with chocolate and coffee, and grass. Still some powerful tannins. Pretty enjoyable
Red
1990 Guerrieri Rizzardi Castello Guerrieri Vino da Tavola Italy, Veneto, Vino da Tavola
93 points
A pronounced, yet cool minty honeyed nose. A nice bunch of fresh roses on the palate, red cherries, plums, and strawberry jam, as well as a grassy undergrowth. Fairly long finish of strawberry and mint. Really enjoyable and definitely feels much younger than a 1990

Flight 3 - Piedmont (6 notes)

Red
2012 Michele Chiarlo Barbera d'Asti Superiore Nizza La Court Italy, Piedmont, Asti, Barbera d'Asti Superiore Nizza
88 points
Good sense of sour cherry and strawberry, markedly acidic, and clearly a coffee and chocolate flavour from the oak ageing. But somehow, the fruits and oak are kind of diverging... Could have been more integrated
Red
1996 Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Costa Russi Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
90 points
Nose of strawberry, grass, and herb botanicals. Some green tannins and acids, and a pretty good intensity and spice, with blackberry, cherry, and grassy
Red
2011 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Riserva Asili Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
86 points
A good hit of plums and cherry up front, but little underneath, and instead with a heightened alcohol heat... ouch...
Red
2011 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
93 points
Lightly ruby coloured, and very acidic, and still with good tannins. Sour cherries, raspberry and grass. Nicely balanced and classic

1996 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
93 points
Very funky, topsoil nose, which softens later to reveal lavender flowers. Still a lot of acids and tannin structure, while intense, with cherry, blackberry, grass, mint, and liquorice. Good power!
Red
2013 Renato Ratti Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
88 points
Powerful and complex nose of cherries, coffee, chocolate, grass. Tasted mostly mouth-drying tannins, bit of grass and oak, and a hit of whatever left of the acids and alcohol towards the back. Underdelivered
